Ecuador, Vilcabamba Valley and eternal life | VPRO Documentary
In the Valley of Vilcabamba in Ecuador people get older than average. But why are people in Vilcabamba Valley older than in other villages? What is the secret of Vilcabamba so that people refer to it as the valley of eternal life? What´s so special about Vilcabamba that it has a reputation as a paradise for elderly people?
Dutch presenter and film maker Stef Biemans travels across the back of the Andes and wonders how people are doing in South America. In the fourth episode he visits the Vilcabamba valley of the valley of eternal life in Ecuador and tries to understand the magic of the place. What do vivacious centenarians do in Ecuador just below the equator to stay healthy, what is arranged for them when they get sick and how does the South American deal with old people?
The Vilcabamba Valley in Ecuador is known for its healthy elderly. The fit old man who interrupts his work on the land to give Stef Biemans a firm handshake, shows an official identity card with a date of birth in 1913. A little later he swings his hips while dancing.
Other elderly people in the valley also dance, in groups. Which does not mean that they all go whistling through life. It may well be a time to finish, says a woman of 89. But: God keeps me alive. I wait until it is my time. A voluntary end to earthly life is so unthinkable that Biemans does not even dare to touch the subject. Man proposes, God disposes. Or for many South Americans: God and his native helpers.

[HLHW] Exile in Ecuador with Moselio Schaechter
Moselio Schaechter spent his childhood in Mussolini’s Italy. Thanks to a transit visa for Portugal and the United States, the Schaechters made it to Quito, Ecuador in January 1941. Over the next nine years, Moselio struggled to accommodate his Jewish identity with a nascent South American self. In this talk he shares memories of his youth, his experience in the Ecuadorian Jewish refugee community, his life in the U.S., and his subsequent visit to his old home. Schaechter is a distinguished professor emeritus at Tufts University and an adjunct professor in microbiology at SDSU and UC San Diego.

Landscape Architecture in Latin America: Unpacking Theory, Practice, and Agency, Panel 1
Women in Design (WiD) and Latin GSD, in collaboration with the Department of Landscape Architecture, present “Landscape Architecture in Latin America: Unpacking Theory, Practice, and Agency.” This symposium will provide an opportunity to debate the current and future state of landscape architecture in Latin America.
Latin America is formed by a diverse set of territories, offering both challenges and opportunities to the landscape discipline. This symposium brings together professionals from several countries to discuss the complex social, political, and environmental realities engaged in their work. From the creation of ecological corridors in Bogota to urbanization in the Galapagos Islands, these designers interpret landscape through a range of lenses that include urbanism, architecture, ecology, and social engagement.
Speaking to the many interdisciplinary interests at the GSD, panelists will frame conversations around theory and practice, established firms and emerging voices, and the role of equity in design. What is the intersection of research and built work? How is the discipline taught and regulated? How does landscape translate to academia and public policy? By presenting the current state of landscape architecture in Latin America this symposium will provide a space for imagining its future possibilities.

Dedicated to: Galo Burbano and his mother, Blanca.
Blanca's House was founded in 2008 by nurse practitioner Galo Burbano in honor of his mother, Blanca; she housed the sick and needy in South America, opening her home to those in need of a place to stay as they received medical care. Through these grass-roots initiatives, Galo has turned his mother's passion into his own and founded Blanca's House.
Blanca's House coordinates medical missions to third world countries, providing health care to the poor and indigent. Many countries in South America (such as Ecuador) are overwhelmed with those who cannot afford treatment for a debilitating or life threatening condition left untreated by their native health care system. This is where Blanca's House steps in and makes the difference and coordinates efforts from passionate doctors, nurses and other medical staffers (as well as volunteers) to reach into their hearts, take the time and give selflessly on these missions
This year's honorees did just that.
Every Blanca's House mission can mean a better life (or, life and death in some cases) for those with medical needs left ignored and unsupported. Parents who will stop at nothing to obtain treatment for their children. Adults with facial deformities and cleft palettes seeking care; they will travel far and wide, walking many miles when the American doctors come to town. And children who suffer with diseases because of poor socio-economic conditions.
These are the folks who rely on Blanca's House- some even knowing in advance when Galo and company will be there.
Coordinating several missions per year, Blanca's House is a growing organization that is always in need of medical equipment and supplies, medicine, drugs, and toys for kids.
Needed volunteerism:
Doctors, RN's and other medical professionals
Non-medical/administrative.
Children under 18 are encouraged to join missions with a parent or adult guardian.
Other ways to contribute to Blanca's House:
Transportation assistance
Travel donations
Financial contributions.

Pope Wants to Chew Coca Leaves in Bolivia
Pope Francis reportedly wants to chew coca leaves during his upcoming visit to Bolivia. That's according to Bolivian Culture Minister Marko Machicao.
Coca, the raw ingredient for cocaine, has been used in the Andes for thousands of years to combat altitude sickness and as a mild stimulant.
Machicao said the government offered the Pope coca tea and the pontiff had specifically requested to chew coca.
The Vatican has not yet commented. The Pope travels to Bolivia on July 8th.
Coca leaves were declared an illegal substance under the 1961 UN convention on narcotic drugs.
But the growing of coca leaves for religious and medicinal purposes is legal and licensed in Bolivia. The Pope's visit to Bolivia is part of a larger tour of Latin American countries which will also take him to Ecuador and Paraguay.

SUMMARY

The Amazon River (UK: , US: ; Spanish and Portuguese: Amazonas) in South America is the largest river by discharge volume of water in the world, and by some definitions it is the longest. The headwaters of the Apurímac River on Nevado Mismi had been considered for nearly a century as the Amazon's most distant source, until a 2014 study found it to be the headwaters of the Mantaro River on the Cordillera Rumi Cruz in Peru. The Mantaro and Apurímac join, and with other tributaries form the Ucayali River, which in turn meets the Marañón River upstream of Iquitos, Peru, to form what countries other than Brazil consider to be the main stem of the Amazon. Brazilians call this section the Solimões River above its confluence with the Rio Negro to form what Brazilians call the Amazon at the Meeting of Waters (Portuguese: Encontro das Águas) at Manaus, the largest city on the river.
At an average discharge of about 209,000 cubic metres per second (7,400,000 cu ft/s; 209,000,000 L/s; 55,000,000 USgal/s)—approximately 6,591 cubic kilometres per annum (1,581 cu mi/a), greater than the next seven largest independent rivers combined—the Amazon represents 20% of the global riverine discharge to the ocean. The Amazon basin is the largest drainage basin in the world, with an area of approximately 7,050,000 square kilometres (2,720,000 sq mi). The portion of the river's drainage basin in Brazil alone is larger than any other river's basin. The Amazon enters Brazil with only one-fifth of the flow it finally discharges into the Atlantic Ocean, yet already has a greater flow at this point than the discharge of any other river.

Colombia ( (listen) kə-LUM-bee-ə, -LOM-; Spanish: [koˈlombja] (listen)), officially the Republic of Colombia (Spanish: República de Colombia ), is a sovereign state largely situated in the northwest of South America, with territories in Central America. Colombia shares a border to the northwest with Panama, to the east with Venezuela and Brazil and to the south with Ecuador and Peru. It shares its maritime limits with Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Colombia is a unitary, constitutional republic comprising thirty-two departments, with the capital in Bogota.
Colombia has been inhabited by various indigenous peoples since 12,000 BCE, including the Muisca, Quimbaya, and the Tairona. The Spanish arrived in 1499 and by the mid-16th century conquered and colonized much of the region, establishing the New Kingdom of Granada, with Santafé de Bogotá as its capital. Independence from Spain was achieved in 1819, but by 1830 the Gran Colombia Federation was dissolved, with what is now Colombia and Panama emerging as the Republic of New Granada. The new nation experimented with federalism as the Granadine Confederation (1858), and then the United States of Colombia (1863), before the Republic of Colombia was finally declared in 1886. Panama seceded in 1903, leading to Colombia's present borders. Since the 1960s, the country has suffered from an asymmetric low-intensity armed conflict and political violence, both of which escalated in the 1990s; since 2005, there has been significant improvement in security, stability, and rule of law.Colombia is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse countries in the world, with its rich cultural heritage reflecting influences by indigenous peoples, European settlement, forced African migration, immigration from Europe and the Middle East. Urban centres are mostly located in the highlands of the Andes mountains and the Caribbean coast.
Colombia is among the world's 17 megadiverse countries, and the most densely biodiverse of these per square kilometer; its territory encompasses Amazon rainforest, tropical grassland and coastlines along both the Caribbean and Pacific.
Colombia is a middle power and regional actor in Latin America, with the fourth-largest economy. It is part of the CIVETS group of six leading emerging markets and a member of the UN, the WTO, the OECD, the OAS, the Pacific Alliance, and other international organizations. Colombia has a diversified economy with macroeconomic stability and favorable growth prospects in the long run.

Panama ( ( listen) PAN-ə-mah; Spanish: Panamá [panaˈma]), officially the Republic of Panama (Spanish: República de Panamá), is a country in Central America, bordered by Costa Rica to the west, Colombia to the southeast, the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. The capital and largest city is Panama City, whose metropolitan area is home to nearly half the country's 4 million people.Panama was inhabited by indigenous tribes before Spanish colonists arrived in the 16th century. It broke away from Spain in 1821 and joined the Republic of Gran Colombia, a union of Nueva Granada, Ecuador, and Venezuela. After Gran Colombia dissolved in 1831, Panama and Nueva Granada eventually became the Republic of Colombia. With the backing of the United States, Panama seceded from Colombia in 1903, allowing the construction of the Panama Canal to be completed by the US Army Corps of Engineers between 1904 and 1914. The 1977 Torrijos–Carter Treaties led to the transfer of the Canal from the United States to Panama on December 31, 1999.Revenue from canal tolls continues to represent a significant portion of Panama's GDP, although commerce, banking, and tourism are major and growing sectors. In 2015 Panama ranked 60th in the world in terms of the Human Development Index. Since 2010, Panama has been the second-most competitive economy in Latin America, according to the World Economic Forum's Global Competitiveness Index. Covering around 40 percent of its land area, Panama's jungles are home to an abundance of tropical plants and animals – some of them found nowhere else on the planet. Panama is a founding member of the United Nations and other international organizations such as OAS, LAIA, G77, WHO and NAM.
