Peru-Pucara cemetery high in Andes on road Puno-to-Cusco-HzF-P1540426
The cemetery of Pucara high up in the Andes with All Saints Day decorations still hanging and flapping in the mountainwinds at 3700 meter approx.. Pucara is a village in the Andes, on the way between Puno and Cusco. I turned with the camera in a 360 degrees circle around, not spectacular but it gives a good overview.

Lake Titicaca Travel Guide (Uros, Amantaní and Taquile Islands)
To close off our trip to Peru we headed from Cuzco to Puno with the intention of covering Lake Titicaca (Lago Titicaca) as best we could over the duration of two days. Our trip started from Puno early in the morning when we boarded a boat bound for the Uros Island. The Uros people, who lives on floating reed islands, welcomed us to their floating islands where we had a chance to tour around and purchase some souvenirs.

Afterwards, we took a traditional rowing boat made out of reeds to another island before heading off to Amantaní. Upon arriving our host family greeted us and we headed to our homestay where we had a traditional lunch consisting of Quinoa soup, potatoes, fried cheese and rice. Afterwards we hiked to the top of the Island (Pachamama) where we had incredible 360 degree views. It felt like we could almost touch the clouds. In the evening we dressed up in traditional attire (ponchos) and headed over for a dance party with live traditional music. The following morning we visited our final island (Taquile) before heading back to Puno. Overall, it was an incredible trip and one we recommend highly; however, be sure to do the two day trip and opposed to the one day option for a more relaxed time.
Lake Titicaca Travel Guide (Uros, Amantaní, Taquile) to Puno, Peru Travel Video Transcript:
So we are taking a really fun overnight trip from Puno today to visit Lake Titicaca. Yeah, we're going to visit several islands and do a homestay overnight. Yeah, and we'll get to meet the different communities that live here because we have Aymara people and Quechua people. So we've just arrived at our first island. And this one is called Corazon de Lago which means the heart of the lake. And this is an Aymara community that lives on a floating reed island so let's go have a look around. Let's check it out.
So it is a bit of a strange sensation walking on the reed islands because it is not solid ground and your feet do sink in a little bit but not to the point where you feel like you're going to fall through and you know go in the water. But still kind of interesting.
Okay, so what have we learned so far on this floating reed island? So we've visiting the Uros floating reed islands and there is approximately 80 to 90 of them. And the people who originally came here were escaping hostile neighbors.
So this is quite a secluded environment for them.
We've made it to our third island of the day. This one is called Amantani and this island is actually home to Quechua people whereas the first two that we visited were home to the Aymara people.
So aside from meeting our host families, what I'm most excited for is food. Because it is already lunchtime. It's a little bit past our lunch time actually. And we forgot to pack snacks. Yep. So I'm starving. So before we settle in we're going to get some local food. Yeah, and apparently they are vegetarian on this island, so we're going to be having a Quinoa soup and then just like potatoes and roots and different vegetables. Cheese and stuff like that. Cheese, yes. So it should be good.
So are you doing okay? A little bit out of breathe? Yeah, a little bit out of breath. We're still feeling the altitude. Actually Lake Titicaca is higher than Cuzco if you can believe that.
Sopa de Quinoa. Ah, sopa de quinoa. Quinoa soup. Ah, que rico.
So we reached the top of Pachamama. How are the views? Oh, we sure did. The views are insane here. It is almost like you're touching the clouds. It is like you can reach up and touch them.
So we're all dressed up, we've had our dinner and now it is time to go to the party. And we are dressed up in traditional outfits. Party!
Alright, so it is a new day and we are visiting a new island. Yes, this is our last stop on Lake Titicaca. This is Taquile Island and we're just going to take a wander around and see what we find. Yes, maybe we'll find our guide and she can tell us a bit of the history of the place. Let's go find her.
This is part of our Travel in Peru series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Peruvian culture, Peruvian arts, Peruvian foods, Peruvian religion, Peruvian cuisine and Peruvian people. All things Peruano. The best of Comida Peruana and Cocina Peruana.

Ride Day 55: Puno, Peru to La Paz, Bolivia by Motorbike
Full Post and Border Crossing Information: After nearly 3 weeks in Peru, it was time to go from my last stop in Puno and across the border by motorbike into La Paz, Bolivia.
The trip would take me following across mostly on paved roads and swept along high altitude valleys for most of the way through a variety of weather conditions.
Thankfully there was little to no traffic on this road as it is the northernmost border town from Peru to Bolivia.
There were also only a smattering of towns along the way, Chucuito, Acora, Ilave District, Juli, Pomata, Zepita, Desaguadero (Border Town) and onto my final destination in La Paz, Bolivia
I enjoyed my time immensely in Peru, the diversifying cultures, the food, the people were all fantastic and the riding, spectacular. Sad to leave such a wonderful country, but happy to go onward to another country. Bolivia!
Although the trip total was only 160 miles (260 kilometers), it still took me over 6 hours including border time. It was a little exhausting, and I was looking forward to a nice ride into La Paz, Bolivia.
I would also first encounter issues in Bolivia with fuel. Basically, any tourist is charged up to double the normal fuel rate. There were no gas stations on my way to the border, which caused concerns and then in Bolivia many gas stations were empty.

Visiting Lake Titicaca in Bolivia and Peru | DJI Mavic Pro | Sony A7RII | 2017
Located on the border between Peru and Bolivia, Lake Titicaca is the world’s highest navigable lake, with a surface elevation of over 3,800 m. It’s peaceful beauty and ancient cultural traditions make visiting the lake a highlight of any South American itinerary.
We spent a week exploring the area around Lake Titicaca on our recent trip to Bolivia and Peru and got a chance to visit 4 out of the 6 islands. We started in La Paz, made our way to Copacabana, the gateway to Isla del Sol, and then continued onwards to Puno, the getaway to Uros, Amanti and Taquile islands in Peru.

Floating Islands of Uros - Lake Titicaca - Puno - Peru - Southamerica
The Uros Indians of Peru and Bolivia are a very interesting people. They live high in the Peruvian and Bolivian Andes and on Lake Titicaca on floating islands. They were forced onto the lake as the Incan Indians pushed further and further into their territory. The Uros Islands are made of reeds which grow naturally on the banks of Lake Titicaca. The reeds are matted down and added to as they disintegrate at the bottom. The islands float on the surface of the lake. The make their homes, their furniture and their boats out of the reeds. They also eat the tender bottoms of the reeds. The Uros Indians are known for their beautiful and intricate handwork, weaving, spinning, and embroidery.
There are more than 40 floating islands, the largest being Huacavacani, Toranipata, and Santa Maria. During the rainy season, from November to February, the islands often float on the surface of the lake. The reeds used to make their island, homes, boats, etc. are called tortora reeds. Life on the islands is hard. Many have moved to the mainland leaving only a few hundred on the islands. The islands rot from the bottom very quickly so that new reeds must constantly be added to the top. The surface is spongy and sometimes difficult to walk on. They also have to travel a distance to find fresh water. Legend says that the full-blooded Uros Indians had black blood that protected them from the frigid temperatures on the water and also from drowning. The Uros were pushed back onto the lake when the Incas took over the region. The Incas considered the Uros Indians to be so poor that the only tax they required of them was a section of hollow cane filled with rice. After a drought worsened their poverty, most Uros left the islands and intermarried with the Ayamara and Quechua-speaking Indians. The last full-blooded Uro was a woman who died in 1959. The Uros who moved back to the islands are actually a mix of Uros, Ayamaras and Incas, though they follow the ways of the Uros. After the Incas and Spaniards quit exerting their influence, the Uros once again became proud fishermen who survive by living off the tortora reeds as well as hunting, fishing, and selling their beautiful handicrafts.
To visitors to Lake Titicaca, a boat trip to the floating islands, a unique tourist destination, is a must. These islands are made and re-made from the totora reeds which provide home, sustenance and transportation for their residents. About a two hour boat ride from Puno, on the Peruvian side of the lake, the largest of about 40 islands.
These floating islands are the home of the Uros tribe, one which pre-dates the Incan civilization. According to their legends, they existed before the sun, when the earth was still dark and cold. They were impervious to drowining or being struck by lightning. They lost their status as super beings when they disobeyed universal order and mixed with humans, making them susceptible to contempt. They scattered, losing their identity, language, and customs. They became the Uro-Aymaras, and now speak Aymara. Because of their simple and precarious lifestyle, the Incas thought them worth little and accordingly taxed them very little. Yet the Uros, with their basic reed homes outlasted the mighty Incas with their huge stone temples and mountain-top enclaves.
The islands are part of the Titicaca National Reserve, created in 1978 to preserve 37 thousand hectares of marsh reeds in the south and north sectors of Lake Titicaca. The reserve is divided into two sections, Ramis, in the provinces of Huancané and Ramis; and Puno, in the province of the same name. The reserve protects over 60 species of native birds, four families of fish and 18 native amphibians species. There are three islands in the lake, Huaca Huacani, Toranipata and Santa María.
The floating islands are protected within the Bay of Puno and are home to 2000 or so Uros, who claim to have black blood are consequently immune to the cold. They call themselves be kot-suña, or people of the lake, and consider themselves the owners of the lake and its waters. They continue living by fishing, weaving and now, tourism. They catch fish for themselves and to sell on the mainland. They also catch shore birds and ducks for eggs and food. Occasionaly, if the level of the lake decreases, they may plant potatoes in soil created by the decaying reeds, but as a norm, they are not agricultural. The reed boats quite often have an animal face or shape on the prow and are a favorite photographic subject.
ON AN ISLAND MADE OF REEDS - Lake Titicaca - Puno - Peru
On an island made of reeds, we learn how the Uros people build their floating islands on the highest navigatable lake in the world, Lake Titikaka.
These Peruvian natives survived the Inka invasion on their boats, also made of reeds! This unique way of building is ingrained in their culture, we speak with a native that explains the difficulties of living on the island. They need to constantly be replacing the reeds every 10 to 15 days, and in order to do this, they work as a community - a very inspiring way of living and a must see in your lifetime.
