Pasochoa, 4200m, Volcano Summit Climb ECUADOR
Hiking tour to Pasochoa Mountain.
Pasochoa is a beautiful, 4199 meters (13776 ft) high mountain. The trek is an excellent acclimatization climb which can be used to prepare for more challenging mountains such as Cotopaxi and Chimborazo. The highlight of the Pasochoa trek is its humid cloud forest, situated inside an extinct volcanic crater near Quito. We find over one hundred species of bird and 50 species of original Andean trees. It provides a wonderful day trip. The trek is relatively gentle, going through amazing Páramo grasslands and cloud forests which boast of stunning Andean wildlife, including bulls, horses, hummingbirds, the viridian metal tail, mountain tanagers, red crested cotinga and the occasional andean condor. Ecuador Volcanoes Trek 2018
We started the year as we meant to go on by leading a fabulous group on the Ecuador Volcanoes Trek. After landing in Quito with time to explore the city and visit the Equator and ascend Pichincha (4,000m) in the cable car it was time to head to the Cotopaxi National Park where our amazing Hacienda was located. Using this fantastic home from home as our base we started our acclimatisation process by taking in 3 volcanoes - Pasochoa (4,199m - 20th highest). Ruminahui (4,634m - 16th highest) and Climb Illiniza Norte (5,126m - 8th highest). Each mountain was different and challenging in its own way - especially Illiniza Norte where we experienced very challenging conditions brought on by an electrical storm on the summit ridge!
After a couple days rest at the Hacienda we set off for our first big objective - Cotopaxi (5,897 m ) the 2nd highest mountain in the country. With a long, tough ascent due to the amount of snow and high altitude the team get it their all with 5 out of the 10 making it to the summit just as the sun rose! The views were spectacular with many of the other big volcanoes poking out of the clouds. With a couple more rest days making the most of the Hacienda's fantasti facilities it was time to head to our other objective - Chimborazo.
With an unusual amount of snowfall for this time of year we knew that the ascent may not be possible but gave it a go. After a good few hours of ascent it became clear that the conditions were too dangerous to continue to the summit so the team turned around. No teams summitted that night - we guess the mountain was not in the mood for visitors that day! Although slightly disappointed by the unsuccessful ascent it did not affect how incredible the trip was - it's just part and parcel of high altitude mountaineering. We had an amazing team and really made the most of what was on offer in this truly remarkable country!
