A walk around the Anderton Boat Lift and the River Weaver and Trent and Mersey Canal Cheshire Nov'17
An approximate 14km walk around some really fascinating scenery and views. One of those you could do all year round and I certainly recommend this for all as there are many points where you can shorten the walk. Please enjoy the film! The Upper Entry Gate to the Anderton Boat Lift.
The Anderton Boat Lift near the village of Anderton, Cheshire, in north-west England provides a 50 feet vertical connection between the River Weaver and the Trent and Mersey Canal.
There are actually two lifts -- when one goes down the other goes up and therefore the weight of one exactly balances the weight of the other. Consequently the amount of power required to operate the Boat Lift is minimal.
Built in 1875, the boat lift was in use for over 100 years until it was closed due to corrosion in 1983. Restoration started in 2001 and the boat lift was re-opened in 2002.
It is one of only two working boat lifts in the United Kingdom; the other being the Falkirk Wheel in Scotland.
99. Visiting the Anderton Boat Lift on my narrowboat (Trent and Mersey canal / River Weaver)
Several people suggested that as I was going all the way up to Middlewich I ought to go that little bit further north and visit the Anderton Boat Lift, an amazing engineering structure dating from 1875, which lifts boats from the Trent and Mersey canal down to the River Weaver and vice versa. So I did.
