CSA - San Pedro de Atacama - Chile (South America) - A wonderful trip
San Pedro de Atacama is located 1.670 kms north from Santiago de Chile. To get there first you have to reach Calama, the nearest city, which is connected to San Pedro by an excellent highway and a surprising landscape. Due to the amazing landscape of this zone, San Pedro has turned into the start point of the touristic activity and the excursions around the region. So we can find a big variety of services for the visitors such as lodging, restaurants, tourist agencies, handcraft, telephone office, internet, post and police station.
Places to visit:
- Valley of the Moon: Located in the Cordillera de la Sal, it represents an extraordinary attraction because of its similitude to the moon landscape and its enormous natural coliseum. There is a big dune from which you can appreciate the zone.
- El Tatio Geysers: It is a geothermal field located in the Los Andes Cordillera (4.200 mt over the sea level) which at sunrise presents impressive steaming fumaroles produced by the high temperatures of their watery craters. Don't forget warm clothing, bathing suit, towel, sunblock and mineral water.
- Pukará of Quitor: Over the Quitor hill, just three km north west from San Pedro are the ruins of the Pukará (fortress) , constructed by the atacameños to be protected from other people who lived in South America.
- Death Valley: It is a mountainous and sandy valley near to San Pedro . To get there you have to go through the Cordillera de la Sal where natural sculptures can be admired.

Chile - Crossed Atacama desert with bus - South America, part 70 - Travel video HD
The Atacama Desert is a plateau in South America, covering a 600-mile (1,000 km) strip of land on the Pacific coast, west of the Andes mountains. It is, according to NASA, National Geographic and many other publications, the driest desert in the world. The Atacama occupies 40,600 square miles (105,000 km2) in northern Chile, composed mostly of salt lakes (salares), sand, and felsic lava flows towards the Andes.
The average rainfall in the Chilean region of Antofagasta is just 1 millimetre (0.04 in) per year. Some weather stations in the Atacama have never received rain.

Chile Bolivia (Crossing the Andes Mountains)
DAY 1 – SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA - HITO CAJON– LAGUNA VERDE – GEYSERES
You will be picked up from your central hotel in San Pedro de Atacama around 8 am to be taken to the border at Hito Cajon (border of Chile / Bolivia). After passing through the border formalities it is a short journey to reach Laguna Verde where we will see the emerald green waters of this mineral rich lake (n.b. only green if there is some wind churning up the mineral - if calm there is a beautiful reflection of the volcanoes). We then head towards the geysers Sol de Mañana to witness the bubbling hot mud pools and shooting of steam many meters into the air. Next stop will be Laguna Colorada - a fascinating lake with red water and we can see many flamingos feeding along its shores. Here we will stay in a basic hotel for the night (shared accommodation and no shower).
DAY 2 - LAGUNA COLORADA - DESIERTO DE SILOLI - LAGUNA HONDA - SAN JUAN
We depart on this second day after breakfast around 8 am and we have a chance to see Laguna Colorada again as we pass by a different side of the lake. We will travel through the Siloli desert area and see surreal rock formations. Further along today we pass by Laguna Honda to witness its sulphury smell and pass by some other high altiplano lakes. In the evening we arrive in the town of San Juan where we will stay the night.
DAY 3 – FULL DAY ON SALT FLATS - SALAR DE UYUNI
Today we will visit the amazing salt flats. Here we will see the ojos del sal were water is bubbling up through holes in the Salar, we will see where local workers gather salt into mounds and visit Isla Incahausi where we will find giant cacti and have great panoramic views of the surrounding salt flats. After leaving the salt flats we will visit the town of Colchani to see how the salt is processed and you can also ask your driver if he can take you to the Train Cemetery for the final stop on the tour before arriving in Uyuni. There will be plenty of time to stop and take photographs of the incredible salt flats throughout the day before we return to Uyuni in the evening around 3-5 pm.
San Pedro de Atacama/Lake Cejar Part 8
Welcome to my travelchannel. On my channel you can find almost 1000 films of more than 70 countries.

Salar de Atacama is the largest salt flat in Chile. It is located 55 km (34 mi) south of San Pedro de Atacama, is surrounded by mountains, and has no drainage outlets. In the east it is enclosed by the main chain of the Andes, while to the west lies a secondary mountain range of the Andes called Cordillera de Domeyko. Large volcanoes dominate the landscape, including the Licancabur, Acamarachi, Aguas Calientes and the Láscar. The last is one of the most active volcanoes in Chile. All of them are located along the eastern side of the Salar de Atacama, forming a generally north-south trending line of volcanoes that separate it from smaller endorheic basins.
The Atacama Desert (Spanish: Desierto de Atacama) is a plateau in South America, covering a 1,000-kilometre (600 mi) strip of land on the Pacific coast, west of the Andes mountains. It is the driest non-polar desert in the world.According to estimates the Atacama Desert proper occupies 105,000 square kilometres (41,000 sq mi),[ or 128,000 square kilometres (49,000 sq mi) if the barren lower slopes of the Andes are included. Most of the desert is composed of stony terrain, salt lakes (salares), sand, and felsic lava that flows towards the Andes.
The World Wide Fund for Nature defines the Atacama Desert ecoregion as extending from a few kilometers south of the Peru–Chile border to about 30° south latitude. The National Geographic Society considers the coastal area of southern Peru to be part of the Atacama Desert and also includes the deserts south of the Ica Region in Peru.Peru borders it on the north and the Chilean Matorral ecoregion borders it on the south. To the east lies the less arid Central Andean dry puna ecoregion. The drier portion of this ecoregion is located south of the Loa River between the parallel Sierra Vicuña Mackenna and Cordillera Domeyko. To the north of the Loa lies the Pampa del Tamarugal.
Although the almost total lack of precipitation is the most prominent characteristic of the Atacama Desert, exceptions may occur. In July 2011, an extreme Antarctic cold front broke through the rain shadow, bringing 80 cm (31 in) of snow to the plateau, stranding residents across the region, particularly in Bolivia, where many drivers became stuck in snow drifts and emergency crews became overtaxed with a large number of rescue calls.
This phenomenon is called the altiplano winter, which can produce a little rain and abundant thunderstorms, and occurs in January and February. In 2012, the altiplano winter brought floods to San Pedro de Atacama.
On March 25, 2015, heavy rainfall affected the southern part of the Atacama desert. Resulting floods triggered mudflows that affected the cities of Copiapo, Tierra Amarilla, Chile, Chanaral, and Diego de Almagro, causing the deaths of more than 100 people.
Ride Day 59: Uyuni, Bolivia to San Pedro de Atacama, Chile
Full Post & Border Crossing Information:
Onwards to Chile! I will miss Bolivia, the country provided me with some of the biggest highlights of my trip. I will not miss the gas station scamming that goes on in this country though.
The 223 km trip to the border would be 95% off-road, with stops along the way in San Cristóbal (where you must get gas) and swept along high altitude valleys for most of the way through mainly sunny but freezing cold conditions.
Thankfully there was little to no traffic on this road as I was able to go pretty fast most of the way on the hard packed surface. The only time you need to take care is through towns, which often turns the road into a bog. I would not like to ride this road when it was wet though as it would be as slippery as hell.
There were also only a smattering of towns along the way, Culpina K, Alota and Cerro Tomasamil, the border town is called Estacion Avaro (Border Town) and onto my final destination in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile.
Although the trip total was 340 miles (545 kilometers) and took me over 12 hours including border time. It was a little exhausting, and I was looking forward to a nice ride into Chile.
Once I turned off the main highway in Chile to get to San Pedro de Atacama, the weather turned nasty and my last few hours were pretty painful, with freezing rain and lashing winds. That last 2 hours, was pretty tough riding, and I was happy when I arrived!

Atacama, Chile - Musical Tour of a World-Class Destination - Unravel Travel TV
Chile A World-Class Desert Destination.
The narrow streets of old towns are home to the mysticism of ancestral cultures and all the trappings of modern tourism. This unique blend of past and present has made places like San Pedro one of the most photographed places in specialized journals.
Located 102 km from Calama (the closest city), the land around San Pedro de Atacama is primarily owned by native peoples whose focus is agriculture and tourism. Its old town square features a church (built in 1774) that reveals some of local architectural style: cactus wood details, adobe construction and leather-bound algarrobo beams. Nearby, you'll find the R.P. Gustavo Le Paige Archeological Museum, where you can marvel at mummies and everyday objects that offer a glimpse into the richness of the area's past.
The town is filled with artisanal crafts stands where you can buy knit goods, jewelry and herbs, including coca leaves that can be used to combat altitude sickness on visits to the El Tatio Geysers. You can enjoy a wonderful view of the geothermic field at sunrise from 4,300 meters above sea level. The geysers are one of the area's most popular tourist attractions. On the way back, treat yourself to a relaxing visit to the Puritama Hot Springs. Pure delight.
Heading southeast from San Pedro, you'll come across a number of attractions: the town of Toconao, the Atacama Salt Flat and the Chaxa Lagoon, which is home to flamingoes and other bird species.
A few destinations are best visited at sunset, such as Valle de la Luna and Valle de la Muerte. Both offer gorgeous shadows and shifting colors that make them perfect for photography. You can reach both places from San Pedro by bike.
All of these sites are part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve, whose nearly 74,000 hectares are divided into seven sectors, each of which contains different natural settings. You can explore all of them on guided tours.
San Pedro de Atacama offers a host of pubs and restaurants that will tempt you with their excellent cuisine and bring a day of tours and spectacular sites to a pleasant close.
Come nightfall, there's nothing better than awaiting sleep surrounded by stars and the songs of owls.
