Peru Expedition - First Light Guiding - Alpamayo, Tocllaraju, Ishinca, Urus
The Andes are the longest unbroken mountain chain in the world, stretching over 7000km. The Cordillera Blanca of Peru is a mountaineers mecca with 25 mountain over 6000m, and more than 50 mountains above 5500m.
In 2017 Penny Brothers fulfilled a long ambition to climb in the area and we were successful on all fronts - coming home safely, reaching all our objectives and having a great time. It was 37 years since she had been above 6000m and she was incredibly satisfied to know she could do it again.

Tips on travel to the Santa Cruz Trek in Huaraz, Peru in the heart of the Andes
The Santa Cruz trek in the Huaraz region of Peru is one of Peru's least known but most beautiful treks. This video slideshow tells you everything you need to know before you set out.
A photo trip to Huaraz Peru. Laguna 69, Laguna Paron, Pastoruri Glacier and Chavin!

This video shot by my wife ended up as a collaboration between us both. I contributed some still photographs and a few video clips. We couldn’t edit it as well as we wanted to because our computers couldn’t handle the task. The videos were all shot in 4k (though it doesn’t look like it here) and hope to eventually do a better edit. Hope you enjoy the video and go to my website if you’d like to see more of my work!
Did you ever get the chance to go somewhere so amazing that you’ll never be the same? My wife and I got the chance to do just that with the main goal to take awesome photos. After lots of planning and growing anticipation the day had finally come! We were going someplace truly “once in a lifetime”!
Flying over the Andes mountain range is something you’ll never forget. In many places, the elevations are nearly double those found in the Rocky Mountains. Huaraz Peru sits at around 10,000 feet in elevation nestled between the snow-capped Cordillera Blanca and the Cordillera Negra mountain ranges. The views of the mountains in the background make a pleasant atmosphere for this cool little city! The city is busy year-round as a popular destination for trekkers, mountain climbers, mountain bikers, snowboarders, and more! The surrounding mountains regularly reach altitudes of 15,000 feet, so taking an extra day or two to acclimate is probably necessary and you’ll probably find some cool hangouts and meet some cool people! The area is home to the world’s highest tropical glacier field with none more famous than Pastoruri glacier!
Pastoruri glacier was a great acclimatization hike after a day or two of rest. The landscape changes many times during the two-hour drive to the drop off point. The altitude tops off at about 17,000 feet but the 1-hour hike is fairly easy and the views near the top are very rewarding! You can even take a horse halfway up the mountain if you’re not feeling your best!
With glaciers come glacier lakes and Paron Lake is a good choice during acclimation due to the limited hiking necessary and the beautiful turquoise water! Operators will drop you off right beside the lake however you will probably still exhaust yourself by the time the day is done. There is an overlook to hike to and waterfalls nearby as well as free roaming cattle to keep things interesting. The views are simply stunning!
Our next destination was Laguna 69! The hike is a much harder three-hour hike reaching altitudes of about 15,000 feet, but the bright blue waters make it all worthwhile! Staying more than a few minutes and you will probably see and hear the ice breaking off and falling into the water, a sad reminder of the steady retreat of the glaciers in this part of the world. The hike down is much easier than the hike up and so it affords you the chance to take in and appreciate the beautiful scenery! Having run out of water halfway through the trip we decided to fill our water bottle with water from the stream here. If there’s anywhere left in the world safe to drink the water, it would be here. We didn’t get sick and we haven’t died yet a month later, so it was probably okay!
Our final destination during our trip to Huaraz was to Chavin de Huantar, a ruins site constructed around 1200 B.C. by the Chavin (a pre-Incan people). It was an elaborate site with much carved stone that gives an indication of the amazing stonework that would show up later with the Incan civilization (including their masterpiece Machu Picchu)! You’ve probably all seen the famous stone faces the site is famous for (even if you didn’t know where they come from). We even got to explore a tunnel system built underneath the main temple complex that was constructed complete with natural light and elaborate ductwork for air ventilation. The site has left intact only one of the carved stone heads in its original location on the outside of the wall. The rest are being protected in various museums including the one in the city of Chavin itself which is where we would finish the day.
Back in Huaraz for our last day in town, there are plenty of great places to eat, drink, and meet other people. There are many international foods available and local craft beers to try as well as Peru’s pisco sours. There were many things that we did not get to do, but a week is just too short to do it all (especially if you’re not already acclimated upon arrival). The shortest multi-day trek is the Santa Cruz trek and it takes four days to complete. You will need more than a week if you plan on doing this trek in addition to any of the things we did during our trip. A good excuse for me to go back again! Hope you enjoyed sharing in this experience and feel free to contact me for more info!

A Week In Huaraz, Peru
UPDATE: Read the blog post here for more details:
This is a compilation of clips from my week in (and around) Huaraz, Peru in October of 2015. Huaraz is a destination for outdoorsy folks around the world, and it's very well known for some of its multi-day treks. I went trekking, climbing, and ice climbing in the area.

During June - July of 2019, Me and my classmates spent 5 weeks in the in Cordillera Negra camping and living in hostels. My main role in this study abroad was to lead the water quality research team as we discovered how the glacial retracting was affecting the local peoples water in serious ways. As a group in total, we studied water quality, geology, vegetation, glacial quality and how they all played off each other. Huaraz, Peru is facing harsh sudden effects of Climate Change and they are in desperate need of scientific action. Soon enough, the glaciers will be completely eradicated and Huaraz will be at severe risk for landslides and avalanches. In the future, they may even run out of fresh water sources, and the disappearance of the ecosystem that is established in the Andes.

Hiking in Peruvian Andes | Cordillera Blanca 2017
This video is about an epic journey of three friends around spectacular views of Peru mountains in Cordillera Blanca. We spent the first two weeks traveling around the stunning Andes doing many unforgettable adventures and life experiences.
At first, we went to the amazing Santa Cruz trek, which has been voted one of the best treks in the world. We did the trek without a guide and we can recommend it to anyone who wants to save money and plan their own schedule.
After Santa Cruz Trek we took a guided five day climbing trip, where we climbed to Urus (5420m) summit.
After the mountains we went to the jungle, which is coming on the second part of the video.
So stay tuned!
Cordillera Blanca, Peru
The beauty of Peruvian Andes is just unreal...
Somewhere in Peru - Huaraz
Ground zero for outdoor adventure worship in Peru, the Cordilleras are one of the preeminent hiking, trekking and backpacking spots in South America. Every which way visitor gone throw gaze, perennially glacier white peaks razor their way through expansive mantles of lime green valleys. In the recesses of the prodigious giants, huffle scores of pristine jade lakes, ice caves and torrid springs. The Cordillera Blanca is one of the highest mountain ranges in the world outside the Himalaya and it’s 18 ostentatious summits of more than 6000m will not let forget it for a second. Huaraz is the fast beating heart linking the trekking trails and roads that serve as the mountains arteries. Plans of daring ice climbs, mountain biking exploits and rock climbing expeditions are hatched over ice-cold beers in fireplace warmed hostels and bars, often only interrupted by a brief sojourn into the eastern valley to the enigmatic 3000 year old ruin of Chavin de Huantar. Huaraz is the restless capital of this Andean adventure kingdom and it’s rooftops command exhaustive panoramas of the city’s dominion – one of the most impressive mountain ranges in the world. Nearly wiped out by the earthquake of 1970, Huaraz isn’t going to win any Andean village beauty contests anytime soon, but it does have personality and it means Huaraz can be sustainable.
Amazing Peru Travel: Tan alto como el cóndor by AmazingPeru.com
“So High as the Condor”: In 1978 a group of Spaniards arrived in Huaraz who were to become the first Spanish climbers to reach Artesonraju Mountain (6,025 m). This is the times of how Amazing Peru started back in 1978 in Huaraz, with our founders father Filiberto Rurush a UIAGM Mountain Guide in Peru. It took them over two weeks with two high level campsites. They also complied their dream of climbing the most beautiful mountain in the world Alpamayo (5,947 m) climbing through its icy lines is the dream of any climber
Other mountains climbed included Uros, Ishinca, Chopicalqui (6,395 m). The film starts: after a never to end long long trip we reach Huaraz..... returning after 40 years, Huaraz town now in 2018 is not the same but they returned for a new adventure through Peru which included The Andes of Huaraz, Cusco, Maras & Moray, Sacred Valley, the Inca citadel Machu Picchu, Arequipa, the Rainbow Mountain and the Colca Canyon (second deepest canyon in the world). In this film production you can appreciate this brief story of the expedition, with a lot of information about the Andes, Wildlife and Nature. It shows culture, archaeology, customs, art, music, Peruvian Cuisine, Folklore and more. We are proud to provide our services to our customers worldwide who return year after year with us, this is a good example of happy customers who have travelled with us over 40 years ago! #sohighasthecondor #40yrs #adventures #peru #travel #climbing ,#40yearsChallenge Copyright ???? ©️ 2019 Isidoro Rodriguez Cubillas.- Espana
