The setting is idyllic; a horseshoe river surrounding the village, with a sandy beach, pine forest and rice paddies all around. Cherry blossom engulfs the village in spring. The Andong International Mask Dance Festival takes place in early October, with Hahoe Folk Village hosting an incredible traditional fireworks display. You can catch a Korean mask dance performance throughout the year, a highlight of any visit.
This is also one of the best places in Korea to do a hanok stay, with many of the local families opening their homes to visitors.
Other highlights include trying delicious Andong Jjimdak, a local specialty chicken dish ideal for sharing. Andong Mackerel is another tasty treat.

My $50 (50,000 Won) A Night Homestay In Hahoe Folk Village, Andong, South Korea. I stayed here 1 night which was pretty cool to wander around this village in the evening and early morning whilst there were no tourists. I think the price was a little on the high side considering it was just for the room, although my dinner for $10 was fantastic value.The traditional village is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Town.

MUST VISIT - Hahoe Folk Village in Andong, KOREA (WeWillNomad)
Hahoe is a representative traditional village where residents of the same family name, the Pungsan Ryu Clan, have been living for generations of about 600 years. The historic village is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers tourists a glimpse into the ancient traditions of the folk. The village is still inhabited and functioning and is recognisable by its traditional houses with either straw-thatched roofs or tile-roofed homes interspersed throughout the village.
A variety of hands-on experience programs are available including tea ceremonies and a free traditional mask dance performance at 2pm on most days, depending on the season. For more info check hahoe.or.kr and be sure to know where these are held as we somehow ended up in the ‘overflow’ open-air arena where only a digital presentation was shown on a big screen.
Be sure to walk across the river via the timber pedestrian bridge (previously a ferry used to transport visitors across the river) from the Hahoe village to Buyongdae. This 64-meter-high cliff is easily accessible and offers a bird’s eye view of the traditional homes of Hahoe Village below.

Ryu Sung Ryong, a humanist in the Joseon Dynasty, and his descendants live in this house. The name of the house, Chunghyodang, means to be loyal to the country and to the parents.
⊙Hwagyeongdang - Important folklore material No.84 - 30:48
The house in Hahoe Folk Village is the most magnificent and perfectly equipped with the formalities of the main house. The name of the mansion, Hwagyeongdang, means 'to serve the parents and the king'.
⊙Samsindang - Protected trees - 34:40
It is a 600-year-old zelkova tree that is located in the center of the village and serves as a chapel to support babies and help with childbirth and growth. On January 15th of the lunar calendar, they celebrate the peace of the village every year.
⊙Mansongjeong - Natural Monument No.473 - 40:50
This pine forest was created to complement the feng shui deficiencies and protect the villages. This place is also where The Yangban enjoyed traditional play.
⊙Buyongdae - 43:36
Buyongdae is a place where you can see the Nakdong River and the whole village from a cliff of 64 m above sea level.
☞ Introduction to Hahoe Folk Village.
Andong Hahoe Folk Village is where the family of Ryu has lived for generations for 600 years. Ryu Un-ryong, a Confucian scholar, and Ryu Sung-ryong, a secretary in Joseon Dynasty, are famous.
The name of the village, 'Hahoe', means 'water', which means that the Nakdong River is winding its village in 'S' shape. Hahoe Village is located along mountains and rivers and is considered the best place for people to live in Feng Shui.
There is a 600-year-old Zelkova called 'Samsindang' in the middle of the village. All the houses in Hahoe Folk Village are built around the trees and look towards the river. It is very different from most houses in Korea being built look towards the south.
☞ Visited Elizabeth II of United Kingdom.
Queen Elizabeth II of UK visited the Andong Hahoe Folk Village on April 21, 1999, the home of Confucianism. That day was the Queen's 73rd birthday. The queen was delighted to receive Korean traditional birthdays from residents of the village and eat Korean food with chopsticks. The villagers showed the traditional dance to the queen. The queen and the attendants who watched it applauded and responded.
☞ Registered as a World Heritage Site.
Hahoe Folk Village was registered as the 10th World Heritage Site in Korea with the Gyeongju Yangdong Village at the 34th World Heritage Committee held in Brasilia, Brazil in July 2010.
According to the proposed resolution, the harmony and arrangement of the buildings here show the social structure of the Joseon Dynasty and the Confucian culture of Yangban. UNESCO appreciated the continuity of this tradition for many years.
UNESCO also appreciated the fact that the intangible cultural heritage related to the lives and beliefs of people such as literary works, artworks, academic and cultural achievements, community plays, and traditional ceremonial events of Korean Confucian scholars has been passed on for generations.
The reason why Hahoe Folk Village was listed as a World Heritage Site is that the lives of Koreans who have lived in harmony with nature have been recognized globally.

Had an awesome weekend with Seoul Flyers. We went to Andong Hahoe Folk Village (안동 하회마을), which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Then we went for a nice little walk around a lake that was in a mountain. That night we stayed in a really cool traditional Hanok village (한옥). We go up early the next morning and run the Cheongsong Apple Trail half-marathon. I ran it in 2:01:30, which isn’t too bad for me and seeing how there were so many hills. The area down south in Korea is just beautiful, we had a great time.

Artravel _ Andong _ Architecture that safeguards the values from the past
Andong is Korea's capital city of spiritual culture where diverse historical and cultural heritages are carefully preserved. At the Hahoe Folk Village, in particular, the traditional structures that exist harmoniously and embrace the layout designed by our ancestors show the yangban culture from the Joseon Dynasty, a tradition that has been kept alive to this day and has turned the village into one of UNESCO's World Heritages.
Peter visits Chunghyodang, a house built to honor the accomplishments of the family's ancestor. It still stands strong, despite the centuries that have passed since its construction, thanks to the descendants that have taken their responsibility to protect the house very seriously.
Peter and his wife spend the night in gotaek, an ancient house, to experience how the Korean ancestors used to live in the past and to feel their presence.

Andong Mask Dance Festival is held in Andong area which is considered the capital of Korean traditional culture, with the theme of mask and mask dance. Andong’s culture and religion have remained a great value over the years with various cultures intact. Therefore, Andong is the region which has the most of cultural heritages and boasts the beauty of the East alike.
Andong Hahoe Folk Village [UNESCO World Heritage]
Hahoe Village is home to descendants of the Ryu clan of Pungsan and is well-known for its traditional houses. Birthplace of renowned scholars of the Joseon Period such as Gyeomam Ryu Un-ryong and Seoae Ryu Seong-ryong, the village became even more famous after Queen Elizabeth of England visited on April 21, 1999.
Andong Hahoe Folk Village [UNESCO World Heritage] (안동 하회마을 [유네스코 세계문화유산])
Hahoe Village (translating to “Village Enveloped by Water”) gets its name from Nakdong River, which flows around the town’s perimeter. The village is located at the foothills of Hwasan Mountain, an offshoot of Taebaek Mountain that rises up to the east. The center of the village is populated by large tile-roofed houses belonging to the Ryu clan, adding their own unique charm to the surrounding thatched roofs.
Hahoe Village boasts exquisite scenic sights: the elegant Nakdong River flowing around the village, the magnificent Buyongdae Cliff, endlessly unfolding sandy beaches, and lush, ancient pine trees. Visitors can take the boat to Buyongdae Cliff for a panoramic view of the village.
In addition to breathtaking scenery, Hahoe Village offers delectable local delicacies. Try the Andong Soju (distilled alcoholic beverage), Heotjesabap (a type of Bibimbap eaten by the nobles), Andong Gangodeungeo (salted mackerel), and Andong Guksu (a kind of noodle dish).
Nearby attractions include Bongjeongsa Temple (built during the Silla Period), Gosan Seowon (Confucian Academy), Gwiraejeong, Gyemyeongsan Mountain Recreational Forest, Hakgasan Mountain Recreational Forest, and Waryongsan Mountain.
Hahoe Village, along with Yangdong Village in Gyeongju, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List under the category of “Historic Villages in Korea” on July 31, 2010.
Andong Mask Dance Festival is held every autumn.

Andong Hahoe Village has preserved the housing architecture and the village structure of the Joseon Dynasty. Moreover, the village was not artificially created; there are people who actually live there.
Three sides of Hahoe Village is surrounded by the Nakdong River. Because the river swirls around the village, the village is named Hahoe, and is also called the spinning river village.
This village became known to the public by a Confucian scholar of the Joseon Dynasty (1392~1910), Gyeomam Ryu Unryong (1539~1601) and Seoae Ryu Seongryong (1542~1607) who had done great deeds during the Imjin War(Japanese Invasion in 1592).
Because the village is surrounded by mountains and water, it had never been invaded. This is the reason why these houses still remain in their original structures.
There are 176 families in the village and they are known as the group village of the Pungsan Ryu family. There are houses designated as National treasures.
Hahoe Village is also famous for the Byeolsin exorcism, maskdance and Hahoe mask. The Hahoe mask is the oldest mask in Korea and is used in the Hahoe Maskdance. Hahoe Village became famous from the visit of Queen Elizabeth in 1999.
