Titanic - From Prow to Stern - Life-Size - Southampton, England - East Park - 14-15 April 2012
Titanic Centenary Commemoration - Andrews Park - East Park - Southampton, England - 14-15 April 2012 - During the weekend of 14-15 April 2012, the City of Southampton paid homage to those who constructed and sailed on the maiden voyage of RMS Titanic 100 years before. During the weekend, series of events took place, including an Open House and convention put on by the British Titanic Society, a painted, to-scale outline of the ship in Southampton's East Park, and a commemorative vigil held that evening, prior to the memorial service at St. Mary's Church on the morning of Sunday, 15 April 2012. One of the most poignant highlights was held the evening of Saturday, 14 April in East Park, where a narration of events was plaintively read between 11:40pm and 2:20am, marking what had taken place aboard ship in real time. A complete hush permeated the city once news of the sinking and those lost reached Southampton. Not one person in Southampton was not directly impacted nor did not know someone who was - many descendants of those who sailed with her still reside in the vicinity. Of the 1,503 people who died that night, 549 came from Southampton, out of the 724 crew originating from there with families. In East Park, the life-size, full scale dimensions of the ship were drawn on the ground of the park in its full 882.5 foot length. The masts, four funnels, bridge, forward and aft Grand Staircases, lifeboats, prow and stern were all drawn to full-size. In this unique instance, the length of the Titanic was traversed by bicycle. This is an extremely rare opportunity to appreciate the full-scale dimensions and enormity of this great ship, and to share it with everyone.

A narration of events was plaintively read between 11:40pm and 2:20am, marking what had taken place aboard ship in real time. It was a moving account on this chilly evening, during which time several hundred people stood vigil with the help of hot tea, coffee and cocoa. This is the finale to the evening and those who remaining stayed throughout the entire narration. During the first two hours and 15 minutes, classical music played in the background. In the closing minutes, as a fitting tribute to the frantic final minutes of the ship and her remaining passengers, the music ceased. Not one person in Southampton could claim they were not directly affected nor did not know a person who was. Many descendants still reside in the vicinity. A complete hush permeated the city once news of the sinking and those lost reached Southampton. Of the 1,503 people who died that night, 549 came from Southampton. These are the final moments of the evening's vigil.

Titanic Engineers Memorial Southampton
Southampton's Titanic Memorial To the memory of the Engineer Officers of the R.M.S. Titanic, who showed their huge conception of duty and their heroism by remaining at their posts, 15th April 1912.
The R.M.S. Titanic, which was built in Belfast, en route from Southampton to New York, tragically collided with an iceberg and sank on 15th April 1912, with the loss of 1514 lives.
The Southampton Titanic Engineers Memorial was restored in 2010, and is located Southampton's Andrews Park (Also known as East Park) in Hampshire, England.
I filmed this video, which was previously featured on my channel My World Through a Lens, whilst walking around the city on a very rainy 3 April 2012.
Days after filming this, a new museum of the Titanic and Historic Maritime Southampton, called SeaCity Museum and located in Southampton's Civic Centre opened it's doors on 10th April 2012.

Southampton Titanic Vigil 15 April 2012: 100 years on
These are the rather shaky videos I took with my iPhone at the Vigil put on by the Nuffield Theatre in Southampton's East Park to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.
It was a profoundly moving event. The outline of the Titanic's boat deck, bow and stern were painted onto the ground and the edge of the ship was marked with the row of lights seen in the first photo. A solemn voice would read out the events that took place at that time 100 years on. It was dramatic. As you will see at the end of the video, the people who had congregated, some with candles, were reduced to an emotion but respectful silence by the end.
More information about the vigil can be found at:
I really hope this vigil will be done again at some point in the future.
I was able to attend the vigil as I was attending the British Titanic Society's convention in Southampton at the time.

Documentary 2015 Titanic Under The Ocean
RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in the early morning of 15 April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, UK, to New York City, US. The sinking resulted in the loss of more than 1,500 passengers and crew, making it one of the deadliest commercial peacetime maritime disasters in modern history. The RMS Titanic, the largest ship afloat at the time it entered service, was the second of three Olympic class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line, and was built by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast with Thomas Andrews as her naval architect. Andrews was among those lost in the sinking. On her maiden voyage, she carried 2,224 passengers and crew.
