My trip to Viharnra Sien or Anek Kusol Sala, Pattaya
A friend of mine had one of those scooters and she offered to take me on a trip to a Buddhist Temple and museum. We ended up at Viharnra Sien (Anek Kusol Sala) which is technically in Pattaya, Thailand I think. It is literally filled with history and I was amazed at the historical artifacts on display. Chinese Temple ~ Viharn Sien or Viharnra Sien or Anek Kusala Sala Temple, Chonburi, Thailand
The Anek Kusala Sala Viharnra Sien in Pattaya Anek Kusala Sala is located in Wat Yanasangwararam, a large compound in the southern part of Pattaya.
The Viharnra Sien Chinese temple in Pattaya is one of Thailand’s most important centers of Chinese culture and works of art. It is home to one of the greatest collections of Chinese art and antiquities outside of China itself.
Thailand and China have a historically long relationship. There is a large Thai-Chinese population in Thailand today that can trace their roots back to ancestors who emigrated from China. They brought with them aspects of their culture, food, religion, and art. The Viharnra Sien temple pays homage to this long-standing relationship.
The Viharnra Sien temple was the vision of Master Sa-nga Kulkobkiat. Born in Bangkok Thailand in 1925, but raised in China, this temple was one of his legacies celebrating the cultures of both countries. He also created a second Viharnra Sien in Chaozhou City, Guangdong, China. He wanted them to help encourage cooperation between China and Thailand.
In 1987, Master Sa-nga Kulkobkiat’s vision was turned into reality. Then King Bhumibol Adulyadej gave him royal permission to construct the temple complex. The King granted him 7 rai of land (2.7 acres) to build on within the Wat Yansangwararam temple grounds. On June 6th, 1988 the King inaugurated the construction and gave it the Thai name Anek Kusala Sala.
Master Kulkobkiat oversaw the entire project, from design through construction. In a little over 5 years the temple held its opening ceremony on December 24th, 1993. In the ceremony, the Thai-Chinese offered the building and donated many great antiques and artworks in honor of the King.
The temple has a massive collection of bronze statues, jade carvings, paintings, and countless other pieces of Thai and Chinese art and cultural relics. The Chinese government has also contributed a large number of pieces for permanent display at the temple.

After visiting the Silverlake Vineyard on the 24th June 2014, my friend who drove the taxi, took me all round the back roads to this next venue. When it came into view it was a pleasant surprise because from here you could see the mountain that contained the Khao Chee Jan, Laser engraved Buddha next to the Silverlake Vineyard. It was a wonderful view from this Temple. Also you could see the very tall spire of Wat Yansangwararam, this temple is set in beautiful landscaped gardens and worth a visit at the same time as this Chinese one.
The Viharn Sien is a beautiful and unique Chinese Temple a little off the beaten track but most taxi drivers will know it. It is more of a museum now, being home to many unique and priceless Chinese statues and Buddha figures. It is believed to be one of a kind outside China. I can fully endorse that by the sheer numbers housed here. I don’t think I have ever seen so many bronze figures poised in many different styles of Kung Fu fighting also called Shaolin Wushu, a trait of Shaolin priests and warriors.
When you get to this Temple, the car park has only one section covered over to protect your car from the fierce heat around Chonburi. It’s not very large and so this gets filled up first. There are some stalls there selling cold water and other drinks. I headed straight for the main entrance, which was a mistake. The payment booth is across the road where the entrance fee is paid, which was 50 Baht per person, the charge applied to Thai people also at this Temple. Then back across the road to gain entry. The staff on the gate were much more friendly than the staff in the ticket booth. You could actually have a laugh with them at the main gate entrance.
Inside the garden area, is the usual place for Buddhist to offer prayers and flowers or other gifts. There are several statues around this part of the Temple grounds and most of it is laid out as raised gardens. A flight of steps in front of the Temple leads you to a balcony, where shelving is arranged to put your shoes in to keep them out of the midday sun. Security staff are all around this Temple, when you step inside you can see why. This building comprises of three floors each with their own beautiful decorations and adornments. The name Viharn or sometimes called Vihranra Sien stands for House of Gods. It was only built in 1987 to commemorate the current King of Thailand’s 60th birthday, King Bhumibol Adulyadej or Rama IX of the Chakri dynasty.
The one main large central building has several pavilion halls surrounding it. The grounds are about 3 acres in size and overlook a beautiful large lake that is also next to Wat Yansangwararam Temple. Viharn Sien ( or sometimes spelt Sian in Thailand ) is home to one of the best collections of Chinese art in Thailand. Some of the pottery inside is around 3000 years old. Terracotta figures named Arhats, who are the followers of the Buddha that have reached a high stage of Enlightenment. The original eighteen Arhats are depicted in Mahayana Buddhism as the original followers of the Buddha who have followed the Eightfold Path and attained the Four Stages of Enlightenment.
They have supposedly reached the state of Nirvana ( in the Buddhism, nirvana refers to the serene stillness of mind after the inclinations of desire, aversion, and delusion have been finally cast out ) and are therefore free of worldly cravings. They are charged to protect the Buddhist faith and to await on earth for the coming of Maitreya. In China, the eighteen Arhats are also a popular subject in Buddhist art, such as the famous Chinese group of glazed pottery luohans from Yixian of Liao dynasty ( 907–1125 ). Many of the items on display here in this Temple were gifts from the Chinese Government.
