The Lost World - Canaima & Angel Falls
Canaima National Parkis a 30,000 km2 (12,000 sq mi) park in south-eastern Venezuela that borders Brazil and Guyana. It is located in Bolívar State, and roughly occupies the same area as the Gran Sabana region.
About 65% of the park is occupied by plateaus of rock called tepuis, which are a kind of plateau of millions of years old, with vertical walls and almost flat tops. These constitute a unique biological environment and are also of great geological interest. Their sheer cliffs and waterfalls (including Angel Falls, which is the highest waterfall in the world, at 1,002 metres (3,287 ft)) create spectacular landscapes.
The most famous tepuis in the park are Mount Roraima, the tallest and easiest to climb, and Auyantepui, the site of Angel Falls.
Highlights from Canaima National park include the 4 hour boat ride to the base of angel falls, and hiking towards the viewpoint. We stayed adjacent in a small lodging area, sleeping in hammocks and waking up to the distance sound of Angel Falls, clear in view. We first stayed in Canaima at the lagoon, surrounded by spectacular waterfalls, and was also a filming location for Jurassic Park.

Angel Falls in the Canaima National Park - Venezuela
Angel Falls is found in Venezuela in the Canaima National Park. It is the highest waterfall in the world at 3,212 feet (979 m). The falls has a clear drop of 2,647 feet (807 m) which is so far that the water vaporizes with the wind and becomes mist well before reaching the ground. Angel Falls is also called Kerepakupai meru which means “waterfall of the deepest place.”
The waterfall has been known as the Angel Falls since the Mid-20th century; they are named after Jimmie Angel, a US aviator, who was the first person to fly over the falls.[2] Angel's ashes were scattered over the falls on 2 July 1960.[3]
The common Spanish name Salto Ángel derives from his surname. In 2009, President Hugo Chávez announced his intention to change the name to the purported original indigenous Pemon term (Kerepakupai Vená, meaning waterfall of the deepest place), on the grounds that the nation's most famous landmark should bear an indigenous name.[4] Explaining the name change, Chávez was reported to have said, This is ours, long before Angel ever arrived there ... this is indigenous property.[5] However, he later said that he would not decree the change of name, but only was defending the use of Kerepakupai Vená.[6]

Angel Falls aka Salto Angel in Canaima National Park is the highest waterfall in the world!
In this second episode of our Venezuela 2019 travel vlog, we continue our adventures South America at Canaima National Park.
For both Lexie and I, visiting Angel Falls was always a travel goal. With the current mess with Nicolas Maduro, the Venezuela crisis hitting a peak in the news, and the massive drop in tourism, we thought we would have to put it off indefinitely.
Fortunately we had great contacts (Pablo and Sandy), who made this dream trip possible for us. So we flew into Caracas, and the story begins. They say Don't blame a country by the actions of its government So we couldn't believe all the bad Venezuela news, we wanted to meet the people, and see its nature and landscape.
The day started with a 3 hour boat ride up Rio Carrao, with a stop at La Poza de Felicidad, or Happiness Pool. When we got to our campsite, we found it abandoned. Angels Falls used to get 500+ tourists a day, and now it was receiving what looked like it's first 2 in a long time. We set up our hammocks and begun to explore. We found a crack in the jungle, and bam... There it was Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world, peeking out between the trees.
The next morning we started early and hiked an hour to a viewpoint and pool at the base of the falls. We even managed to get drone video of angel falls. It was the perfect travel day.
Our hearts go out the the Venezuelan people. Myself and my travel companion Lexie Alford visited this beautiful place late 2018, with the mission to show another side of a country in crisis. We planned to show the beauty of the people, and the natural beauty of the country.
This is not a video about the current economical or political situation. This is a Venezeula travel vlog of what we experienced as tourists.

Angel Falls (Spanish: Salto Ángel; Pemon language: Kerepakupai vena, meaning waterfall of the deepest place, or Parakupa-vena, meaning the fall from the highest point) is a waterfall in Venezuela.
It is the world's highest waterfall, with a height of 979 m (3,212 ft) and a plunge of 807 m (2,648 ft). The waterfall drops over the edge of the Auyantepui mountain in the Canaima National Park (Spanish: Parque Nacional Canaima), a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Gran Sabana region of Bolívar State, Venezuela.
The height of the fall is so great that, before getting anywhere near the ground, much of the water is evaporated or carried away as a fine mist by the strong wind. The base of the falls feeds into the Kerep River (alternatively known as the Río Gauya), which flows into the Churun River, a tributary of the Carrao River.
The height figure 979 m (3,212 ft) mostly consists of the main plunge but also includes about 400 m (0.25 mi) of sloped cascades and rapids below the drop and a 30 m (98 ft) high plunge downstream of the talus rapids. While the main plunge is undoubtedly the highest single drop in the world, some feel that including the lower cascades somewhat stretches the criteria for the measurement of waterfalls, although there are no universally recognized standards of waterfall measurement.
The waterfall was known for most of the twentieth century by the name Angel Falls after Jimmie Angel, a US aviator who was the first to fly over the falls in a plane. The common Spanish name Salto Ángel derives from the English. The falls are sometimes referred to as Churún-merú, meaning thunder waterfall, in error; that name corresponds to another waterfall in the Canaima National Park (also on Auyantepui, in fact).
Sir Walter Raleigh described what was possibly a tepuy (table top mountain), and he is sometimes said to have been the first European to view the Angel Falls, but these claims are considered far-fetched. Some historians state that the first European to visit the waterfall was Fernando de Berrío, a Spanish explorer and governor from the 16th and 17th centuries.Later on, they were indeed spotted in 1912 by the Venezuelan explorer Ernesto Sánchez La Cruz, but he did not publicize his discovery. They were not known to the outside world until American aviator Jimmie Angel flew over them on 16 November 1933 on a flight while he was searching for a valuable ore bed.
Returning on 9 October 1937, Angel tried to land his Metal Aircraft Corporation Flamingo monoplane El Río Caroní; atop Auyan-tepui, but the plane was damaged when the wheels sank into the marshy ground, and he and his three companions, including his wife Marie, were forced to descend the tepui on foot. It took them 11 days to make their way back to civilization, but news of their adventure spread, and the waterfall was named Angel Falls in his honor.
Angel's plane remained on top of the tepuy for 33 years before being lifted out by helicopter. It was restored at the Aviation Museum in Maracay and now sits outdoors on the front of the airport at Ciudad Bolívar.
The first recorded Westerner to reach the river that feeds the falls was Latvian explorer Aleksandrs Laime, also known as Alejandro Laime to the native Pemon tribe. He made the ascent of Auyan-tepui in 1955. He also reached Angel's plane on the same trip, 18 years after the crash landing. He gave the river feeding the falls the name Gauja after a river in Latvia, but the Pemon-given name of the river, Kerep, is still widely used.
Laime also was the first to clear a trail that leads from the Churun River to the base of the falls. On the way, there is a viewpoint commonly used to capture the falls in photographs. It is named Mirador Laime (Laime's Viewpoint in Spanish) in his honor. This trail is used now mostly for tourists, to lead them from the Isla Ratón camp to the small clearing.
The official height of the falls was determined by a National Geographic Society survey carried out by American journalist Ruth Robertson in 1949.
A book by David Nott, Angels Four, chronicles the first successful climb up the face of Auyantepui to the top of the falls.

Towards the end of August of 2018 I took a 2 week trip to Venezuela after I made a promise to go see a good friend of mine when he got married in his home country. He suggested I go see one of the World Heritage Sites that contains the famous Tallest Falls on Earth while I was there. Despite the turmoil that the Country is experiencing I do believe that it has much to offer in its Beauty along with the abundant love that Venezuelans give. I hope to go back one Day.

The Venezuela crisis is is breaking news today in 2019.
With Nicolas Maduro getting almost as attention as Donald Trump, and Juan Guaido being recognized as the new president, people are speaking of protests, upheavals, and even an upcoming coup.
Our hearts go out the the Venezuelan people. Myself and my travel companion Lexie Alford visited this beautiful place late 2018, with the mission to show another side of a country in crisis. We planned to show the beauty of the people, and the natural beauty of the country.
This is not a video about the current econimical or political situation. This is a Venezuela travel vlog of what we experienced as tourists.
We begin our adventure from flying from Miami to Caracas. Arrival at the airport was not filmed, we wanted to keep to ourselves until we could understand the real risks involved. He has expected everything to be much better than the news portrayed, and it seemed true. The next morning we take a small prop plane from Caracas to Canaima National Park, home of Angel Falls. Upon arriving we saw nobody, it was deserted except for a few staff who directed us to the hotel.
That afternoon we booked a tour to a waterfall known as Salto Sapo, known as Frog Falls, and fell in love immedialtely. This was going to be an incredible trip.
