Siemreab day 2 | Cycling around ancient temples
A brief history of Angkor and West Baray
Angkor: a temple complex in Cambodia and one of the largest religious monuments in the world. It’s on a site of 162.6 hectares.
Originally it was constructed as Hindu temple to dedicate to the god Vishnu for the Khmer Empire then it was gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple toward the end of the 12th century.
It was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yasodharapura, present-day Angkor.
West Baray:
The largest artificial reservoir (8 x 2.2km) in the Angkor Park, called the West Baray is located near Angkor Thom city. In ancient times, the Baray was supplied by fresh water that came from two main sources: The Siem Reap and Puok Rivers. The reservoir was probably built by the great king, Suryavarman I, during whose reign the whole Angkor Empire was greatly expanded. This construction was finished in the second half of the 11th century by king Udayadityavarman II, who built, in the centre of the West Baray, a small temple called West Mebon on an island where the bronze statue of the ‘Reclining Vishnu’ was found.

Cycling from Siem Reap to the Ancient Cliff-Side Temple of Preah Vihear in Cambodia
Besides being a recent flashpoint between Thai and Cambodian military, Prasat Preah Vihear is one of Cambodia's most spectacular temples. Preah Vihear is a Khmer temple situated atop a 640-metre cliff in the Dângrêk Mountains, in the Preah Vihear province of northern Cambodia. Built in the 9th-century, Preah Vihear has served as a temple and fortress. The temple as been largely off-limits over the past 40 years due to the heavy presence of landmines in the region (still a major issue in Cambodia) and occupation by Khmer Rouge, Thai and Vietnamese military forces. While the Thai border remains closed due to an on-going border dispute, visitors can make the journey to Prasat Preah Vihear via the Cambodian countryside.
On November 2, 2009 I loaded up my bike and set off from Siem Reap on my own modern day pilgrimage. My route took my through Kulen Prum Tep Wildlife Sanctuary, Anlong Veng (Pol Pot's final refuge), and remote sections of Preah Vihear province before ending in Tbaeng Meanchey. I had planned to continue east toward Stung Treng on some beautiful trails, but unfortunately injured my knee after riding to the top of Prasat Preah Vihear and had to cut the trip short.
Check out for a full blog on the trip and more information on visiting Preah Vihear.

CAMBODIA - SIEM REAP / NATIVE VILLAGE NEAR ANGKOR
Biking through Cambodian village, south of Siem Reap
Video recorded by Deva, a Chinese backpacker that I was with that day, because I proved incapable of riding a bike on dirt roads and holding a camera steady at the same time. In my defense it was a legitimately third world bike and the road is more bumpy than it looks.

Temple Visit
Notes: We opted for a one-day pass for $20 coz we have limited time in Siem Reap. I actually regretted a bit coz we were so tired just to visit as many temples as we can. So my suggestion, if you have a lot of free time or if you are planning to visit Angkor Wat go for the 3-day pass for $40 or 7-day pass for $60. I think 3-day pass is a great option.
