Is ANGKOR WAT Worth Visiting? - Siem Reap Cambodia
Is Angkor Wat worth visiting? Let us show in an in depth look at Angkor Wat Temple in Siem Reap Cambodia so you can decide if it’s worth battling the crowds to see the biggest temple in the world. We also show you another temple in Siem Reap that is a great Angkor Wat alternative, Bantaey Srei. Welcome to Cambodia, DBV Fam!
During our short stay in Siem Reap, Cambodia, the one vlog we wanted to make was a temples of Angkor video. Of course, first up on our list was Angkor Wat. We were initially skeptical of visiting Angkor Wat due to the fact that over 2 million people visit this Khmer temple every year. We couldn’t stop wondering, is Angkor Wat worth visiting? We set out on a mission to let you guys know! When we arrived at the temple, we were pleasantly surprised that there were very few people there. One of our biggest tips to visiting Angkor Wat would be skip the sunrise and head to the temple around noon on a weekday. If you can handle the direct sunlight and heat, you will be rewarded with practically empty temple grounds just like us! Right as we were leaving around 2pm the crowds started flowing into Angkor Wat again right was we were leaving.
Angkor Wat is the biggest temple in the world and it is also known as the best temple in Siem Reap Cambodia. I don’t know if we can whole heartedly agree that it’s the “best” temple, but it certainly is the most famous of the Siem Reap temples. Although ticket prices are steep, $37 for a 1 day pass, the answer to the question is Angkor Wat worth visiting is yes. The temple is certainly worth seeing and the ticket price covers your admission to many other temples in Siem Reap throughout the Angkor Archaeological Park.
We were dead set on finding some temples other than Angkor Wat to show you guys, since it’s so heavily covered already on YouTube. We found the most beautiful little temple about an hours motorbike ride north of Angkor Wat called Bantaey Srei Temple. Bantaey Srei is a small temple made almost entirely out of pink sandstone which is a gorgeous color and a material suitable for easy carving. The intricate carvings are definitely the highlight of Bantaey Srei. We suggest heading there around golden hour, 3-5pm so you can see the amazing soft light illuminate the pink sandstone. This temple was not crowded when we got there at 4pm, however we did see tour buses leaving when we arrived. Overall, we recommend this as a good Angkor Wat alternative, however you won’t see the grand size of Angkor Wat Temple here. Overall, it’s best to couple Bantaey Srei with Angkor for a full Siem Reap temple experience.
If you have any questions about the history of Angkor Wat, tips for visiting Angkor Wat or anything regarding travel in general, please leave a comment down below! Unfortunately, this is our one and only Cambodia travel vlog as we were very tied up with work over the two weeks we stayed in Siem Reap Cambodia. However, we loved Cambodia so much we are already planning a trip to visit the southern islands. Although we didn’t film, we did a lot of other things during our stay so if you have any questions on what to do in Siem Reap please let us know. Until next time, seeya!

Why Angkor Wat (Siem Reap) is a must see | CAMBODIA
Another one of our life bucket list stops the Angkor Wat temples in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Needless to say we had an absolutely incredible time visiting the Khmer Hindu and Buddhist temple ruins.
Things started off in Phnom Penh where we caught the Cambodia Post VIP Van for $11 USD each to get to Siem Reap. This is the site we booked our Cambodia Post VIP Van tickets from:
They have a variety of routes and departure times. We found Cambodia Post VIP Van to be a pretty cheap and convenient way getting from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, then using a tuk tuk for the remainder of our journey to get to our accommodation.
The ride from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap via Cambodia Post VIP Van took about 3 hours in total including a quick lunch stop and there were tuk tuks waiting around for us to get to our final destination (our Airbnb accommodation in Siem Reap) that ended up being just a few minutes drive away.
Our accommodation in Siem Reap was an urban studio located in the peaceful Kandal Village. The place was clean, stylish and comfortable. It's situated above Khmer 652 - a Cambodian restaurant that serves very delicious Khmer cuisine with super lovely staff. There are a handful of other cafes and restaurants nearby as well as local craft shops too.
Khmer 652 is owned by the Airbnb hosts so you also get a 10% discount for dining there. Our favourite meals during our time in Siem Reap were at Khmer 652 as well as Crane just at the back of their alley. We loved the location of our accommodation in Siem Reap because it's also in close walking distance to a supermarket, the river bank and the very lively Pub Street.
After a quick haircut and a browse around Kandal Village we got some rest before heading over to the Angkor Wat temple complex the next day. We opted to get a personal tour guide which turned out to be one of the best decisions ever.
Sarak was our tuk tuk driver and Angkor Wat travel guide, recommended to us from a fellow YouTuber friend. Sarak took us all around the amazing temples in the Angkor Wat temple complex, visiting the lesser-known and secret quiet areas (as well as the main temples too). He even took it upon himself to help us take some beautiful photos with our phone during our entire time together too. He was a driver, travel guide and photographer all in one!
Get in touch with Sarak:
meamsarak@gmail.com
+855 92 394 994
If you're wondering how to get to Angkor Wat, we definitely recommend going via tuk tuk with Sarak to enjoy the open air ride and if you want to go to the quieter spots like we did, simply let him know.
We bought a 3-day multi-pass to visit the Angkor Wat temple complex. First day we had Sarak and on our subsequent visits we had Mr Bean (Sarak's business partner) take us when we filmed Peter's Part 2 for his how to retire early series and on the final visit we went via Grab tuk tuk ourselves just to Angkor Wat. We were in Siem Reap visiting Angkor Wat during November. Btw, make sure to keep your Angkor Wat tickets with you as this gets checked at various entry points into the temple complex.
We visited the following temples:
- West Gate
- Angkor Thom
- Preah Khan
- Ta Prohm (also known as the Tomb Raider temple)
- Bayon (and then finally...)
- Angkor Wat
We also enjoyed a breath taking sunset away from the crowds at Srah Sang.
If you're enjoying our videos please remember to hit that thumbs up and leave us a comment, we really enjoy hearing from our viewers :) Plus if you're new to our channel, we hope you'll subscribe and turn on notifications so you can stay up to date with all our latest videos each week. Angkor Thom, Angkor Wat & Siem Reap (Cambodia) - 4K
Trip Advisor gives both Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat five star reviews, so I was really looking forward to visiting both and they lived up to expectation. We start with a fun tuk tuk ride from our hotel in Siem Reap to Ankor Wat, a really impressive temple surrounded by lakes and woodland. See the stone carved murals and marvel at the workmanship of the lost Khmer empire. After walking along an impressive causeway we reach the ornate entrance the Ankor Thom, a collection of smaller temples, many of which have literally been engulfed by huge trees. The forest and temples have become one to create a fantastic scene that could well be part of a fictional novel about ancient myths, legends and fairytales.

Deep in the forests of Cambodia’s Siem Reap province, an ancient stone city soars skyward. This is the sprawling complex of Angkor Archaeological Park. The site is located in the northwestern region of the country and is only four miles from the city of Siem Reap. The Khmer Empire’s various capitals thrived here from the 9th to 15th centuries, over an empire that stretched from Myanmar to Vietnam. Including forested areas and newly discovered “suburbs” Angkor covers more than 400 square miles—an area considerably larger than New York City’s five boroughs.
The massive Angkor Wat is the most famed of all Cambodia’s temples—it even appears on the nation’s flag. The 12th century “temple-mountain” was built as a spiritual home for the Hindu god Vishnu.
The temples of Angkor are architectural masterpieces laden with artistic treasures like the bas-relief galleries that tell enduring tales of Cambodian history and legend.
Angkor is as much about water as it is about stone—the site boasts an enormous system of artificial canals, dikes, and reservoirs. The West Baray reservoir is the largest of which at 5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. These massive works skillfully harnessed river and rainwater to quench the thirst of some 750,000 residents in the world’s largest preindustrial city. That water also irrigated wealth-producing crops like rice, which served the Khmer as currency.
It’s still a mystery to scientists why the city’s rulers abandoned the site and resettled near the modern capital of Phenom Penh. Some scholars speculate that the downfall of this elaborate water system led to the end of Angkor.
The town of Siem Reap is the gateway to Angkor and is filled with lodging, dining, and tour-package options for all budgets. Those preferring to travel by boat can also make the trip from Phnom Penh in some five or six hours—about the same travel time as by road. The airport in Siem Reap has service to Phnom Penh and regular flights abroad to Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and Laos. The airport in Siem Reap has service to the capital and regular flights to nearby countries.
Peak tourist season in Angkor is December and January, when rainfall is less likely and the climate is most kind. No matter the time of year, a visit to Angkor is sure to leave you awestruck.

DON'T go to SUNRISE at ANGKOR WAT!
Location: Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia.
This morning we woke up at 4 a.m. to see the sunrise at Angkor Wat. It was OK... To be completely honest, I think there are much better ways to spend your morning exploring the Angkor Temple complex.
Sunrise at Angkor Wat is OVERRUN by tourist. Yes, we did contribute to the problem, but that's beside the point. When we showed up to Angkor Wat at 5 a.m. there were already TONS of people there. We weren't even able to get a seat on the far side of the pond. By the time the sun was rising, there were over 2,000 people watching the sunrise with us. The crowds were almost more impressive than the sunrise.
Don't get me wrong, the sunrise over Angkor Wat is beautiful, but so is everything else at the Angkor Temple complex. I would suggest getting up super early one day an visiting other temples besides Angkor Wat at around 6 a.m.. You could have the amazing temples to yourself while everyone else is fighting at Angkor Wat to snap the best picture of the sunrise.

Best Tips for Visiting Angkor Wat - Beat The Crowds in Siem Reap, Cambodia
DIVING in RAJA AMPAT, Indonesia:
We've had an incredible week in Siem Reap, visiting Angkor Wat and a lot of the other nearby temples. There are however a lot of things I wish I knew before visiting Angkor Wat, so I've put together this video to help your trip become as amazing as possible!
As I say in the video, the best time to visit the temples is early in the morning. It is colder, and less crowded. However, a lot of other people also get up early, so you better structure your route in a way opposite of the crowds.
Here are my suggested routs:
1. Start with the gates of Angkor Thom at 7am, then go to Bayon at 7:30, then to the nearby temples after that.
2. Start with Angkor Wat at sunrise, but go to the East end of the temple (everyone else are at the West side of Angkor Wat. After Angkor Wat, quickly go to Ta Phrom, and the nearby temples.
3. Start with Pra Roup at 6:45ish, then head to Ta Som at 7:30. After that, go south to Bantay Kedei and the nearby temples.
Angkor Wat | Siem Reap Cambodia
Angkor Wat Archaeological Park is temple complex in Siem Reap, Cambodia containing the remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. It is one of the largest religious monuments in the world, spanning 402 acres.
We got to spend two days exploring the different temples and it was an absolutely amazing experience.
