Gone Fishin': Trip Satisfaction in the South Carolina For-Hire Fishing Industry
Speaker: Stacey Weinstock, International Policy Fellow, NOAA Office of Law Enforcement
Abstract: The charter fishing industry is an economically important recreational activity that thrives in tourist destinations in coastal areas. While there has been much research on factors contributing to trip satisfaction on freshwater angling, little has been done on marine charter and head boat anglers. To address this data gap, I utilized recent management changes on black sea bass, an economically and popular recreational species in South Carolina, to evaluate what determines trip satisfaction in the marine charter/headboat industry.
About the speaker: Stacey Weinstock recently completed a M.S. from the Environmental Studies Program at the College of Charleston in June 2018. For her graduate thesis, she focused on social science in recreational fisheries management, but ever the multi-tasker, she simultaneously worked at South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium and The Nature Conservancy focusing on projects concerning coastal issues such as oyster management and climate change. Prior to graduate school, she gained diverse experience working in marine and wildlife conservation in the Florida Keys and Virginia. Stacey originates from Virginia and graduated from Virginia Tech in 2012 with two Bachelor of Sciences in Fisheries and Wildlife.

Fish Farm: The Southeast's Premier TROPHY BASS Fishing Retreat!
The Fish Farm was the private honey hole of the late Jim Copeland co-owner of B.A.S.S. (Bass Anglers Sportsman Society), and has been carefully cultivated as a trophy bass fishery for the last 13 years. The Copeland family has meticulously implemented an aggressive fish management plan, and have achieved great results through diversity of forage, fish habitat, harvesting, and the introduction of high quality diverse bass genetics.
For the Copeland's closest friends and family this 163 acre property was their playground. Their great love for fishing and the outdoors is seen on every inch of this fisherman’s paradise. No expense was spared to ensure this was, and is, one of the highest quality fishing properties not only in South Carolina, but the entire Southeast.
There are 8 ponds and lakes on the property and over 40 acres of surface water. Each pond is unique and is purposely built for the fisherman. The ponds have been stocked with pure Florida genetic bass, as well as F1 bass, which both have a much higher top end potential than northern bass that are found in ponds. There are literally bass in these waters that can tip the scales in excess of 10 pounds!!
Surrounding the main lake are 4 large docks, multiple fish feeders, bottom diffused aerators, and even a boathouse with an all-electric bass fishing rig for silent operation. Each additional pond has multiple fish feeders, bottom diffused aerators and are ready for action.
The Fish Farm has been fished by world-class fishermen from around the globe including the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame inductee Gary Yamamoto, co-owner of B.A.S.S and former Time Warner Executive Don Logan, and many other prominent figures.
“I have visited the Copeland’s Fish Farm many times over the past 10 years. It is not only a place that has tremendous bass fishing in several of the ponds, but also is a piece of property for the entire family to chill out and have fun.” – Don Logan, Retired Chairman & CEO of Time Warner, Inc.
“The fishing at the Copeland family property in South Carolina was one of the best fishing experiences I have ever had. The ability to not only fish from the boat, but also just fish from the bank and catch trophy size bass was an experience I will remember for a long time.” – Lee Ellis, Seek One Productions
We manage numerous outstanding fisheries across the eastern United States, and very few have paid attention to detail as Jim Copeland did at his Fish Farm. The intensive management plan implemented the last several years has paid off with an outstanding and diverse fishery on this unique piece of property. It is a special place. – Greg Grimes, Owner of Aquatic Environmental Services

LBM Storage Solutions - Southern Lumber
When Southern Lumber and Millwork learned the state was taking two of their seven acres to make way for a new highway, they were devastated. With 75 years of equity in the Charleston location, moving was not an option. Instead, Southern looked change square in the eye and determined there was nowhere to go but up.
Literally. Together with CT Darnell Construction and Sunbelt Rack, Southern embarked on a 4-phase, 7-building, 3-year-long facility
renovation that transformed their business and shattered their sales goals – all without interrupting their daily operations.

Sumter National Forest And Lick Fork Lake Camping
The Sumter National Forest consists of three ranger districts (Enoree, Long Cane and Andrew Pickens) that comprise nearly 371,000 acres. It is unlike many forests in that its three ranger districts share no contiguous boundaries.
In the piedmont, the Enoree Ranger District has gained national recognition for outstanding work in natural resource management on the Indian Creek Wildlife Habitat Restoration Initiative. The Long Cane Ranger District is home to the Forks Area Trail System, a nationally-known mountain biking trail network. Both districts offer outstanding hiking, boating, hunting and equestrian opportunities.
The Andrew Pickens Ranger District is located in the mountainous western edge of the state, with elevations ranging from 800 to 3,400 feet. Certainly one of its crown jewels is the wild and scenic Chattooga River, a popular whitewater and angling destination. The Ellicott Rock Wilderness offers opportunities for solitude and primitive camping. The Andrew Pickens District has numerous waterfalls and hiking trails to satisfy every challenge level.

Chester State Park's 160-acre Fishing Lake
Chester State Park in South Carolina is one of those places where an RV camper can just enjoy life! I spent a week here earlier this year and just had to come back. This short video gives you a look at the Park's 160-some acre fishing lake. Well, it's for boating and scenery as well. But the think I heard about most from other Park visitors was the remarkably good fishing found here. Park Manager John Wells raved about it during my earlier visit. But I'm always skeptical of Park Managers' assessments of their own park's lakes. Here, everyone talks about it! And, while walking along the hiking path near the lake I did see a few big fish jump. This lake is only one of the many things that makes Chester State Park one of the System's must-visit Parks.

Beginner Surf Fishing - Winter Fishing at the Beach with Shrimp
Can YouTube help me become a better fisherman? In this episode I am fishing at the Fort Morgan Beach in Alabama. I am new to saltwater fishing, so I am try the easiest method. I am bottom fishing with dead shrimp. Despite the large waves and churning surf, I manage to catch two fish. First I catch a decent hard head catfish, then I catch a whiting (gulf kingfish). I am using some older freshwater gear that I wouldn't mind ruining due to sand and saltwater. This is the first of a few videos about beginner saltwater fishing here on Realistic Fishing!

The Palms on Main - Grand Opening Party
Thank you to ABC Columbia for this footage of The Arnold Companies' big opening ceremony for The Palms on Main in downtown Columbia, South Carolina! Joined by Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin, Matt Kennell of the City Center Partnership, Miami pop artist Stephen Gamson, interior designer Tom Holley, architect Tripp Riley of Studio 2LR, and a full house of Midlands media, business & political leaders, Arnold Companies CEO Ben Arnold cut the ribbon for The Palms on Main -- downtown Columbia's fresh, new icon of economic prosperity.
A mod new rental residence with a chic, resort-style swimming pool at the corner of Lady and Main streets in the heart of Columbia, SC, The Palms on Main is one of the latest projects from real estate developer Ben Arnold. With over 60% of the 53 studio and one-bedroom units leased by InterMark Management before the ribbon was cut, this new kid on the block is already bringing a new energy to downtown Columbia.
Lisa Arnold welcomed over 100 of the Midlands' most stylish attendees at a private, poolside soiree where murmurings of best party of the year could be overheard amid the jazz and funk stylings of Jamie Beresford's 4-piece band. Lady Street was blocked off at Main Street to accommodate the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which was held in a giant tent in front of The Palms on Main, located at 1155 Lady Street.
Luminaries in attendance included real estate heavyweights like Don Tomlin and his wife Rachelle, as well as Rick Patel, owner of the hip Sheraton Downtown Columbia. Also spotted was the publisher of Columbia Living and Charleston Living, Robert Sweeney, who came up from Charleston for the event.
ABC Columbia TV anchors Alicia Barnes, Anderson Burns and Eric Weisfeld stopped in to mingle by the pool with guests, who enjoyed floating, bird of paradise floral arrangements, a signature martini bar, and hors d'oeuvres (served on sustainable bamboo plateware) by Rose Naccash of Gourmet Rose and Chef Francois Fisera of Fleur De Lys. Tours of model apartments were enjoyed by all, and interior designer Tom Holley was down from Charlotte, NC to discuss the decision-making process for transforming a onetime hotel into a contemporary residential hotspot.
While The State's Gerry Melendez took photos for Jeff Wilkinson's May 24, 2012 cover story, guests rubbed elbows with City of Columbia officials such as City Councilwoman Leona Plaugh, Special Assistant to the Mayor and Famously Hot New Year organizer Sam Johnson, Director of Planning and Development Services Krista Hampton, and Columbia Development Corporation Executive Director Fred Delk, as well as Columbia CVB Communications Director Kim Jamieson and City Center Partnership Retail Recruitment Director Heather Spires.
Style reporters and lifestyle publishers were out in force, including Carolina Living publishers Patrick and Leyla Mason. Skirt Magazine Columbia editor and sartorial blogger Jenny Maxwell was spotted sipping a Bulleit bourbon on the rocks from the poolside bar, while lifestyle bloggers Ebony Looney and Teowonna Clifton snapped pictures of Stephen Gamson's mural art from the balcony. Gamson is the official artist of the Miami pavilion at the Sundance Film Festival, the Miami Marathon and the Monte Carlo Gran Prix.
A former hotel, the historic site is being transformed by The Arnold Companies into contemporary rental residences with an outdoor swimming pool, floor-to-ceiling windows, stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and brushed nickel fixtures. Pre-leasing is underway, and residential occupancy has commenced. Contact Mindy Taylor for more information on leasing: MTaylor@intermarkmgt.com.

South Carolina deer tag changes
Effective deer season 2017, all harvested deer in South Carolina are required to be tagged at the point of kill.
Commonly called the Deer Management Bill, passage of S.454 in June 2016 was the culmination of a multi-year effort on the part of SC deer hunters, SCDNR, and the SC General Assembly. The basis for the changes brought about by this legislation include changes in SC deer hunter attitudes and changes in the state’s deer population. Visit dnr.sc.gov/deertags for more info.
