Places to see in ( Island of Anglesey - UK )
Anglesey is an island in Wales, off the mainland's northwest coast. It's known for its beaches and ancient sites. The island is accessed by the 19th-century Menai Suspension Bridge and the Britannia Bridge, rebuilt in the 20th century. In the medieval town of Beaumaris, 13th-century Beaumaris Castle has concentric fortifications and a moat. Beaumaris Gaol has Victorian punishment cells and an original tread wheel.
Anglesey is an island off the north-west coast of Wales. With an area of 276 square miles (715 km2), Anglesey is by far the largest island in Wales and the seventh largest in the British Isles. Anglesey is also the largest island in the Irish Sea by area, and the second most populous island (after the Isle of Man). Two bridges span the Menai Strait, connecting the island to the mainland: the Menai Suspension Bridge, designed by Thomas Telford in 1826, and the Britannia Bridge. A historic county of Wales and later administrated as part of Gwynedd, Anglesey today makes up the Isle of Anglesey County along with Holy Island and other smaller islands. The majority of Anglesey's inhabitants are Welsh speakers and Ynys Môn, the Welsh name for the island, is used for the UK Parliament and National Assembly constituencies.
Anglesey is a relatively low-lying island, with low hills spaced evenly over the north of the island. The highest six are: Holyhead Mountain (220 metres (720 ft)); Mynydd Bodafon (178 metres (584 ft)); Mynydd Llaneilian (177 metres (581 ft)); Mynydd y Garn (170 metres (560 ft)); Bwrdd Arthur (164 metres (538 ft)) and Mynydd Llwydiarth (158 metres (518 ft)). To the south/south-east the island is separated from the Welsh mainland by the Menai Strait, which at its narrowest point is about 250 metres (270 yd) wide. In all other directions the island is surrounded by the Irish Sea. It is the 51st largest island in Europe.
There are several small towns scattered around the island, making it quite evenly populated. The largest towns are Holyhead, Llangefni, Benllech, Menai Bridge, and Amlwch. Beaumaris (Welsh: Biwmares), in the east of the island, features Beaumaris Castle, built by Edward I as part of his Bastide Town campaign in North Wales. Beaumaris is a yachting centre, with many boats moored in the bay or off Gallows Point. The village of Newborough (Welsh: Niwbwrch), in the south, created when the townsfolk of Llanfaes were relocated to make way for the building of Beaumaris Castle, includes the site of Llys Rhosyr, another of the courts of the medieval Welsh princes, which features one of the oldest courtrooms in the United Kingdom.
There are a few natural lakes, mostly in the west, such as Llyn Llywenan, the largest natural lake on the island, Llyn Coron, and Cors Cerrig y Daran, but rivers are few and small. There are two large water supply reservoirs operated by Welsh Water. These are Llyn Alaw to the north of the island and Llyn Cefni in the centre of the island, which is fed by the headwaters of the afon Cefni.

Book it now! Save up to 20% -
A former 18th-century Customs House, The Anglesey Arms is a traditional Welsh pub right next to Caernarfon Castle. With free on-site parking, the hotel offers wonderful views.
The cozy rooms feature tea and coffee facilities, and some have views out over the Menai Straits. The Anglesey Arms has an interesting history, located where the castle hanging tower once stood, and is now said to be haunted.
A variety of real ales and world wines are available, and the pub hosts regular live music and quiz nights.
Overlooking Caernarfon Castle, The Anglesey Arms is located on the shores of the beautiful Menai Straits, next to the Island of Anglesey. Snowdonia National Park is just a 15-minute drive, and The Royal Town of Caernarfon Castle Golf Club is 2 miles away.
ANGLESEY. NORTH WALES. 2017
The Isle of Anglesey or Ynys Mon is an island, and county in the North West of Wales. The island has a population of almost 70,000. With a high penetration of Welsh speakers, tourism is one of the major industries for the area. Famous faces from Anglesey include Lemmy from Motorhead and actress/comedian Dawn French. The name Anglesey is thought to have come from a Viking place name. In old Norse the -ey ending indicates an island named after a particular person (cf. Bardsey, Orkney, Ramsey, etc.). Anglesey is probably derived from Ongl's ey, Ongl's island. Who Ongl was we have no idea.
Today it has several thriving towns. The historic town of Beaumaris is the site of one of the castles built by Edward I after his defeat of the Welsh princes, as well as the historic mansion Henllys Hall, now a hotel (see their pages for more on the history of Anglesey and Wales). The town of Holyhead, on Holy Island, is the main ferry port for travel across the Irish Sea to Dublin and Llangefni, in the centre of the island, is the county town. Kovach Computing Services (the host of this site) is located in the village of Pentraeth.
Anglesey also has the village with the longest place name in Great Britain: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch The name, when translated into English, means The church of St. Mary in a hollow of white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and near St. Tysilio's church by the red cave. The name was actually coined in the nineteenth century to attract tourists to the Island. It is abbreviated to Llanfairpwll or Llanfair P.G. by the locals.

Beaumaris castle and town on Anglesey
Beaumaris in Anglesey during the summer heatwave we are having. Anglesey is such a stunning place, absolutely delightful and very varied with idyllic seaside villages and golden sands. Packed full of history, architecture and people from all walks of life a truly great British place to stay and visit.
Castell Biwmares a'r dre yn Sir Fon yn ystod yr tywydd da rydym nin gael am y tro. Gobeithio my fydd yn aros tran diwedd y flwyddyn :)
Beaumaris was originally a Viking settlement known as Porth y Wygyr (Port of the Vikings),[citation needed] but the town itself began its development in 1295 when Edward I of England, having conquered Wales, commissioned the building of Beaumaris Castle as part of a chain of fortifications around the North Wales coast (others include Conwy, Caernarfon and Harlech).
The castle was built on a marsh and that is where it found its name: the French builders called it beaux marais which translates as beautiful marshes.

WOW Sailing Adventure on Menai Straits Anglesey to Beaumaris, North Wales Sept 2019
You would not be blamed to believe that it is some caribbean sea, but it's only Anglesey. In fact we are arriving at Beaumaris, North Wales on a wonderful September 2019 sunny day aboard a lugger, 1830's replica built in Falmouth, sailed home Charles around Cornwall.
Nelson said that the Menai Straits has treacherous waters.
We left Bangor, North Wales, harbor by engine but we stop it as soon as we were out in the straits.
It was not any problem with the engines but I wanted to learn to sail. The captain Charles started teach us the basics as the name of everything left and right side, name of the sails.
He was showing us how to judge / calculate the wind direction and strength, release the jib and the main sail. How to avoid the boom, etc. After this, to avoid overloading with information we relaxed.
Good wind and perfect sun.
Due to a few kwells I could enjoy the trip without the technical yawn.
Things To Do In Wales - Beaumauris Castles, Anglesey, North Wales
North Wales - Things to do in Wales - Baumauris Castle, Anglesey. Of all the Castles in Wales, Beaumauris is one of the most accessable, interesting, complete and FUN! Especially for kids, as there is often a lot of engaging activities, as well as being able to climb and explore the battlements.
This is one of the best things to do in Anglesea and a great alternative to the normal things to do in Snowdonia. North Wales provides a beautifully scenic backdrop to your adventure in this Welsh castle.
Anglesey north wales is at the top of our Wales travel guide list of Top 10 things to do and Beaumaris castle wales is one of the best castles in Wales.
