Canal Boat Hire in England: Pendeford Rockin
UK canal boat holidays. We love going on canal boat holidays on the English canals, and the Welsh canals too! We hired a narrowboat from Norbury Wharf on the Shropshire Union Canal and cruised to Tixall Wide on the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal. Here is a film of us on a canal boat holiday cruising along a section of the Staffs & Worcs Canal known as Pendeford Rockin' - about a mile north of the junction with the Shropshire Union Canal at Autherley Junction. This is a very narrow section of an English canal (the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal) known as “Pendeford Rockin”. It is just north of Autherley Junction – the junction of this canal and the Shropshire Union Canal. In the days when the canals were built, a section of the canal that involved cutting through rock was known as a “rocking” – hence “rockin”.
This section of canal is too narrow for two boats to pass, but there are a few passing points that have been built in to the rock. It is also quite shallow so it’s necessary to proceed very slowly, but that’s one of the reasons for taking a narrow boat holiday in England – to slow down!
All the passing places are on one side of the canal.
The Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal was engineered by James Brindley in 1772, and brought goods from the Potteries down to Gloucester. It is a lovely, winding canal, with some lovely old bridges, and nice villages such as Brewood. Look out for king fishers, water voles and a variety of butterfly species along the cut.

The Locks, Startops End (Marsworth, Buckinghamshire)
When the canal was heavily used during Victorian times there was a major problem with the supply of water, The original locks (for instance the one on the left of the picture) took two narrowboats at a time and this wasted water when only one narrowboat passed through, The solution was to build extra parallel half-width locks, which only took one narrowboat at a time. Where the lock was immediately adjacent to a bridge the bridge had to be extended with an additional arch. After a comparatively short time the scheme was abandoned, and now all the narrow locks have been filled in, apart from one which acts as a dry dock at Tring Summit. This picture shows the narrow lock at Startops End after it had been closed for traffic but before it was filled in.
The Grand Union Canal in England is part of the British canal system. Its main line starts in London and ends in Birmingham, stretching for 137 miles (220 km) with 166 locks.[1] It has arms to places including Leicester, Slough, Aylesbury, Wendover and Northampton.[2]
The Grand Union Canal was also the original name for part of what is now part of the Leicester Line of the modern Grand Union: this latter is now generally referred to as the Old Grand Union Canal in order to avoid ambiguity.
With competition from the railways having taken a large share of traffic in the second half of the 19th century, improvements in roads and vehicle technology in the early part of the 20th century meant that the lorry was also becoming a threat to the canals. Tolls had been reduced to compete with the railways, but there was little scope for further reduction. The Regent's Canal and the Grand Junction Canal agreed that amalgamation and modernisation were the only way to remain competitive.
The Grand Union Canal in its current form came into being on 1 January 1929, and was further extended in 1932. It was formed from the amalgamation of several different canals, and at 286.3 miles (461 km) is by far the longest canal in the UK:

Narrowboat Canal Boats England Video by Nigel Harper Photography
Grand Day Out narrowboat movie with our friends, on the Oxfordshire Canal between Aynho and Banbury! Really fab, tranquil day in sunny June (speeding along at 4mph) and our first ever trip on a Narrowboat. Of course a lot of 'stills' were taken, but I also shot some video on a Nikon D300s with 18-200mm Nikkor VR lens. This short movie is the result.
Music by John Jolliffe composed for my movie 'A Shot at Dawn' (also on my Channel!)
Family holiday to England (the town of looe)
Just a normal family holiday. Trying out my new camera as a dash cam. Looe is a beautiful town especially at this time of the morning when the fog is over the harbour.

Canals of England And Wales: Rye Hill Cutting
UK canal boat holidays. We love going on canal boat holidays on the English canals, and the Welsh canals too! We hired a narrowboat from Norbury Wharf on the Shropshire Union Canal and cruised to Tixall Wide on the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal. Here is a film of us on a canal boat holiday cruising through Rye Hill Cutting. Rye Hill cutting is on the Shropshire Union Canal between Gnosall and Brewood. We filmed this in 2013 when went on a canal boat holiday in England.
As you can see, it is a cutting through some woods and is very peaceful, with kingfishers and herons. For me this represents the main reason for boat hiring in England – slowing down and enjoying the peace and wildlife.

The Chainbridge is sited in a unique spot between the spectacular Dee River, with it's racing white water and leaping salmon, and the Llangollen canal.
The Chainbridge Hotel, is in one of the most picturesque places in Wales, in a valley of serene and natural beauty shielded by the Berwyn and Eglwysig mountains.
Situated on the banks of the Dee River, about a 3 minute walk away are the Horseshoe Falls, the source of the famous Thomas Telford Shropshire Union Canal, which also runs alongside the Hotel. Across the river, steam trains pass every hour.
The Restaurant offers romantic and magnificent panoramic views of the river. The Tudor Bar is situated in the original building and has black and white beams, with its Inglenook fireplace where you can also sit and watch the fishermen fish the river.
English Canals Roving Bridge
UK canal boat holidays. We love going on canal boat holidays on the English canals, and the Welsh canals too! We hired a narrowboat from Norbury Wharf on the Shropshire Union Canal and cruised to Tixall Wide on the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal. Here is a film of us on a canal boat holiday cruising through a roving bridge. This is Milford Bridge – Bridge 105 on the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal. Like many of the bridges in this canal it is built on a bend – it’s almost a design feature of this particular canal, and it’s amazing how often you meet another narrowboat coming the other way at one of these bridges, so that the bend means you see the other boat quite late and have to take urgent evasive action! This bridge is an example of an unusual design feature that appears on the English canals – a roving bridge. These bridges were designed to allow a horse to cross from one side of the canal to the other (in places where the towpath changed sides) without having to unhitch the horse – so the ‘ramps’ up onto the bridge and down off the bridge are actually on the same side of the bridge but on opposite sides of the canal!
