Anjengo Fort, Varkala
Located about 36 km North of Thiruvananthapuram, near the famed beach of Varkala, and lying on the seacoast is Anjengo or Anjuthengu, meaning five coconut trees. A place of historic importance as well as beautiful natural setting, Anjengo is an ideal destination for those who don't mind walking around and explore what is in store.
The historic significance tagged to Anjengo comes through foreign powers like the Portuguese, the Dutch and finally the English East India Company. In the year 1684, the English East India Company chose Anjengo to establish their first trade settlement in Kerala. Following the English East India Company's presence, the place came to be known as Anjengo, meaning five coconut trees. According to local folk, the name Anjengo owes its genesis to a small area of land with five coconut trees, which was given on lease to the English East India Company by the then Queen of Attingal for trade purposes.
At Anjengo, one can find the remnants of the old English Fort, which was targeted several times by other foreign powers, who were at that time fighting each other to get a firm footing in Kerala. The Fort is now under the protection of National Heritage Monuments. There is also a cemetery inside the fort, which most probably would be having the remains of the occupants of the fort, and the oldest among the burial sites dates to 1704.
The backwater stretch here at Anjengo, and the avenue of coconut trees that crisscross the water channels are indeed a sight to behold. Another attraction at Anjengo is the serene beach, which is very clean and ideal for picnickers. The fishing village adjoining the beach adds to the overall charm of Anjengo, with the fishermen and their routine activities adding to one's interest.
Anjengo Fort || Anchuthengu || Varkala | Kerala
This is a short video of my tour to kerala where i visited Anjengo fort. Journey was beautiful with the beach beside the road i was driving.
Fort was small as it was one of the establishment of the British East India Company. It was also the place for the revolt by the people later in 19th century.
It was also the first signalling station in that coast used by the British East India Company.
The fort was established by the British East India Company in 1695 after the Queen of Attingal gave permission. The fort served an important purpose during the Anglo-Mysore war. The lighthouse near the fort is around 130-feet tall, and offers quite a view.

Anchuthengu or Anjengo Fort | Unseen and unexplored place near Varkala/Trivandrum
LOCATION :
Anchuthengu Fort was established by the British East India Company (EIC) in 1696 .
Locals say the place got its name because of the five coconut trees that were originally on it when the property was gifted to the British by the Queen of Attingal.
The British couldn't say the name the way local vernacular dictated and ending up calling it Anjengo.
The fort served as the first signalling station for ships arriving from England.
This fort was the East India Company's first permanent post on the Malabar Coast.
The fort played an important role in the Anglo-Mysore War. During the Anglo-Mysore wars the EIC stored ammunition at the fort.
In 1748 the Bombay Dockyard built the snow Luconia for the Anjengo Pilot Service. In 1802 Anjengo, a ship of 260 tons (bm) was built there, the first vessel of that large a size.
A 130-feet tall light house, which is believed to have guided the ships arriving from Britain, the ruins of one of the earliest factories set up by the British East India company, etc can be seen here as the monuments of a colonial past.
Anchuthengu beach is unexplored and clean.

Anjengo fort ~ Anjuthengu fort~ Thiruvananthapuram # protest against archeology dept.#
This is a request as well as a protest towards Archeological dept why because of their apathy to explore the closed cave/tunnel in Anjengo fort which is undefined till now. The entrance of this cave is still closed without doing any explorations. No one working here is able to narrate a stable description of this cave. History of aged 323 is burying inside here very pathetically. It is very shameful to all history lovers and as well as natives whose ancestors fought against the British at the very first time known as Attingal Revolt.
we are requesting the concerned authority 'the Archaeology dept' to take efficient move for exploring the hidden secrets left by British in Anjengo fort for the sake of the enthusiastic society to learn, watch and study the history in all means.
Thank you ,,,
waiting by expecting the right moment.
Description :~
Anjengo fort is one of the earliest settlements in India. The term Anjengo is the anglicized form of the malayalam name of the place 'Anjutengu', which means five coconut trees. The fort Anjengo was one of the important strategic forts of East India Company in Kerala. In 1960 British East India Company got the permission of the Rani of Attingal to build a fort at Anjengo. The fort was raised and completed in 1695. At that time Raja Ravi Varma was the ruler of Venad region , it was well known that the fort was built by the British East India Company to break the Dutch monopoly over pepper, coir and other goods. Besides that, the fort was also served as a depot for military stores during the Carnatic war. This place also served as a first signalling station for ship arriving from England.
The Anjengo fort is square on plan. It is square on plan. It is square with four bastions. Two of the bastions face the sea and other two the land side. In addition there are numerous gun points towards the sea. There are many tombstones at Anjengo. The earliest epitaph dates back to 1704. The epitaph of Deborah Brabourn and Tarlepe, narrates that here lies Deborah , the wife of John Brabourn Esquire, commodore of Anjengo, she was born in 4th November 1676 and died in September 2nd 1704.
Anjengo was the centre of rebellion against British in Kerala. In 1721under the leadership of chieftains, the inhabitants attacked a contingent of 140 Englishmen, who were proceeded to Attingal to handover the presents to the queen of Attingal. The Rebels massacred all the Englishmen. Then they laid siege to the fort for six months and it ended with the arrival of mere force from Tallichery. The Anjengo Revolt was the first organised revolt against British in Kerala. Later in 1810 under the leadership of Veluthampi, a minister of Travancore, Anjengo became a major centre of revolt against British administration. This is centrally protected monument under the control of Archeological survey of India since 1921.
