[Cycling in Japan] We Got Paid to Ride Our Bikes? Anjo City Company Ride
My new company (in Japan) hosts an annual family cycling event which pays 3,000 yen (~$30 USD) per participant. Needless to say, my wife and I were down to the challenge and for the extra 6,000 yen. First we had to ride down to the ride starting point in Anjo city in Aichi prefecture, Japan, which is about 25km (16 miles) away from our home.
Thuong went by road bike and I decided to go by my mountain bike. The group ride seemed to have about 100 participants, making this one of the largest group rides that I've participated in here in Japan. Our riding destination was Denpark, which is an agricultural park inspired by Denmark. We spent some time looking around the park seeing all of the cool things they had to offer. It's definitely worth a visit if you're looking for a fun day to spend near Nagoya in Southeast Aichi prefecture.

Don't Go To a Japanese Cycling Course On the Weekend... (Ride w/ Tomoko!)
In today's [Cycling in Japan] video, we will be riding at the cycling course in Meijo Park, which is a dedicated 2km bike path right next to Nagoya Castle.

We're joined by Tomoko-san, who is a local Nagoya Youtuber who teaches Japanese
Although this is supposed to be a dedicated cycling path, you'll quickly notice that it is not exactly an ideal place for fast cycling with a large number of children and pedestrians on the course (despite there being a parallel walking/running course).
But as long as you're willing to ride slowly and safely, it's a nice place with some good scenery. Especially right now, we are at the end of the Autumn leaves viewing season and there were some great sights along the way. I also show you my secret view of Nagoya Castle, which is free (you normally have to pay to get in and see it).
There's also a brand new premium Specialized Bikes store that just opened up at Meijo Park. We made a separate video for it here.

Her First Road Bike Century Ride! Cycling Around Japan - Lake Biwa 150km
Today my girlfriend (soon to be fiance) and I will be cycling around Japan's largest lake, Lake Biwa in Shiga prefecture. Japan is known for some really good cycling, and this is one of the most popular and best cycling routes in Japan. In total, it is about 150km ride around the lake, with a mix of busy roads and more quiet roads and bike paths.
About a month before this ride, Thuong decided that she wanted to challenge herself by cycling around lake Biwa. Although she had never ridden a road bike before in her life (or any bike other than a standard cheap bike for that matter), she started training for this goal. Her first ride was about 45km, her second ride was 80km, her third ride was 100km, and today was her 4th ride at 150km.
According to her, each ride was easier than the last since she was able to adapt to the bike and become more comfortable. Even crazier, she was riding in regular shoes with flat pedals and never stood up once during the whole ride.
Anyway, huge props to her for accomplishing her goal!
You can check out today's ride here on strava

Illegal to Use Bike Bell.. ???? How Strict Are Cycling Laws in Japan?
Today Tomoko and I our going to talk about cycling laws that you should know in Japan. We'll start with the normal cycling laws and work our way up to the unique and strange cycling laws.
With my regular bike commuting videos on this channel, I've been getting a lot of questions about some of the cycling rules in Japan, so here it goes.. How do these cycling rules / bike commuting rules differ from your county?
Japan is a country of rules (often grey zone rules), and some of the rules for riding a bike are very different compared to other countries.
Here are some timestamps for different rules we go over
1:00 - Basic cycling laws
1:33 - Pedestrians
2:00 - Cycling on sidewalks
4:07 - Helmets
4:42 - Left side of the road / people riding on the opposite side of the road
6:15 - Brakes on bicycles
8:00 - Drinking and riding
9:25 - Bike lights
10:50 - Bikes on trains
12:28 - Start strange laws
12:40 - Bicycle registration system
14:08 - Police stops
14:40 - No cycling side by side
16:40 - 2 people on the same bike (futarinori)
17:20 - tandem bicycles
18:03 - children seats on bikes
19:09 - umbrellas while cycling
20:05 - cell phone while cycling
20:25 - music while cycling / earphones
21:50 - the strangest law (in my opinion)
Also, be sure to check out Tomoko's channel for some awesome videos about learning Japanese

The War on Drugs Is a Failure
The War on Drugs is a campaign of prohibition and foreign military aid and military intervention being undertaken by the United States government, with the assistance of participating countries, intended to both define and reduce the illegal drug trade. More on this topic:
This initiative includes a set of drug policies of the United States that are intended to discourage the production, distribution, and consumption of illegal psychoactive drugs. The term War on Drugs was first used by President Richard Nixon in 1971.
On May 13, 2009, Gil Kerlikowske, the current Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), signaled that although it did not plan to significantly alter drug enforcement policy, the Obama administration would not use the term War on Drugs, as he claims it is counter-productive. ONDCP's view is that drug addiction is a disease that can be successfully prevented and treated... making drugs more available will make it harder to keep our communities healthy and safe.(2011) One of the alternatives that Mr Kerlikowske has showcased is Sweden's Drug Control Policies that combine balanced public health approach and opposition to drug legalization. The prevalence rates for cocaine use in Sweden are barely one-fifth of European neighbors such as the United Kingdom and Spain.
In June 2011, the Global Commission on Drug Policy released a critical report on the War on Drugs, declaring The global war on drugs has failed, with devastating consequences for individuals and societies around the world. Fifty years after the initiation of the UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, and years after President Nixon launched the US government's war on drugs, fundamental reforms in national and global drug control policies are urgently needed. The report was immediately criticized by organizations that oppose a general legalization of drugs.
In 1986, the US Defense Department funded a two-year study by the RAND Corporation, which found that the use of the armed forces to interdict drugs coming into the United States would have little or no effect on cocaine traffic and might, in fact, raise the profits of cocaine cartels and manufacturers. The 175-page study, Sealing the Borders: The Effects of Increased Military Participation in Drug Interdiction, was prepared by seven researchers, mathematicians and economists at the National Defense Research Institute, a branch of the RAND, and was released in 1988. The study noted that seven prior studies in the past nine years, including one by the Center for Naval Research and the Office of Technology Assessment, had come to similar conclusions. Interdiction efforts, using current armed forces resources, would have almost no effect on cocaine importation into the United States, the report concluded.
During the early-to-mid-1990s, the Clinton administration ordered and funded a major cocaine policy study, again by RAND. The Rand Drug Policy Research Center study concluded that $3 billion should be switched from federal and local law enforcement to treatment. The report said that treatment is the cheapest way to cut drug use, stating that drug treatment is twenty-three times more effective than the supply-side war on drugs.
The National Research Council Committee on Data and Research for Policy on Illegal Drugs published its findings on the efficacy of the drug war. The NRC Committee found that existing studies on efforts to address drug usage and smuggling, from U.S. military operations to eradicate coca fields in Colombia, to domestic drug treatment centers, have all been inconclusive, if the programs have been evaluated at all: The existing drug-use monitoring systems are strikingly inadequate to support the full range of policy decisions that the nation must make.... It is unconscionable for this country to continue to carry out a public policy of this magnitude and cost without any way of knowing whether and to what extent it is having the desired effect. The study, though not ignored by the press, was ignored by top-level policymakers, leading Committee Chair Charles Manski to conclude, as one observer notes, that the drug war has no interest in its own results.
During alcohol prohibition, the period from 1920 to 1933, alcohol use initially fell but began to increase as early as 1922. It has been extrapolated that even if prohibition had not been repealed in 1933, alcohol consumption would have quickly surpassed pre-prohibition levels. One argument against the War on Drugs is that it uses similar measures as Prohibition and is no more effective.
Finally Fixed My Commuter Bike! Of Course It Rains On The First Ride..
Today I am attempting to fix my Schwinn Madison singlespeed bicycle (Nana-chan), which is my main all weather commuting bike.
It's been 2 months since she broke down, which is way to long.. But I've finally gotten over my procrastination and all of my new parts have arrived, so it's time to get down to business.
As a warning, I am by no means a great bike mechanic, but there were lots of requests for more videos like this, so here goes nothing.. If you want to see more bike mechanic videos like this, be sure to let me know down in the comments.

My First E-Bike Road Bike Test Ride - 2020 BMC Alpenchallenge AMP Road
Today I'll be taking a first look at and test riding the new 2020 E-Bike Road Bike from BMC, the Alpenchallenge AMP Road. The AMP series is BMC Switzerland's electric bike series, and the Alpenchallenge is traditionally their commuter bike line.
There's a lot of awesome things about this bike, from the ICS (integrated cockpit system) with no external cables, central shimano battery location, micro travel rear suspension, lightweight frame, and a beautiful black finish.
This is BMC's first entrance into the ebike road bike market, and I gotta say I was very impressed with the finished product. Both from a looks perspective and from a riding and handling perspective. I'm still a beginner when it comes to riding e-bikes, but I had a blast riding this bike.
For more videos of first looks and test rides of the new 2020 BMC models, check out my playlist listed at the end of the video.
