Visit Madagascar: Driving From Diego Suarez to Anakarana National Park
Ankarana National Park was created in 1956 and is only about 90 km/56 miles south of Antsiranana/Diego Suarez but takes hours to drive.
This reserve contains one of the highest density of primates of any forest in the world. There are crowned lemurs, Sanford's brown lemur, northern sportive lemur and many others, all difficult to spot in the high canopy.

Travel Notes:
- Filmed 22nd-26th August 2017
- We travelled with World Expeditions (Reef and Rainforest Package). Expensive but well worth it - many locations covered. Our guide, Raissa, was very knowledgeable and friendly.
- In Antsiranana, we stayed in Allamanda Hotel. No complaints - there is a nice restaurant downstairs.
- Be careful swimming in the bays around Antsiranana - quite a bit of sharp coral.
- There are many roadside quartz stands - a beautiful natural souvenir.
- Be sure to stop in Ramena fishing village for lunch. Delicious freshly caught fish. Maybe you will catch a glimpse of the latest haul being caught.
- French Mountain was a very dry walk but the views of the bay and Sugarloaf Island were very refreshing.
- Try to spot the world's smallest chameleon, the brookesia micra chameleon, in Amber Mountain National Park.
- Be sure to get right amongst the limestone rocks at Ankarana National Park. There are some tight squeezes. Has a very adventurous feel to it all.
- In Ankarana, we stayed at Relais de l'Ankarana. The electricity is only on during the day and mosquito nets are a must. A fun experience.
- Madagascar is the home of vanilla - try to find some along the way.

La Réserve spéciale d'Ankarana fait partie du réseau d'aires protégées de Madagascar. Elle est située à 150 km au sud de Diego Suarez et 30 km au nord d'Ambilobe.
Ce parc national est une réserve pour les crocodiles (animaux sacrés), chauve souris, oiseaux (dont le Mésite varié, l'oiseau le plus rare du monde), lémuriens, serpents. Il est composé d'une forêt caducifolée, d'orchidées aériennes et de végétation rupicole.
Ankarana Reserve is a small vegetated plateau in northern Madagascar with elevations that exceed 1220 meters (4000 feet) above sea level. It is composed of 150-million-year-old limestone.[1] With an average annual rainfall of 1,800 millimeters (70 inches),the underlying rocks are susceptible to erosion, thereby producing caves and underground streams—a karst topography. The rugged relief and the dense vegetation have helped protect the region from human intrusion.
The plateau slopes gently to the east, but on the west it ends abrubtly in the Wall of Ankarana, a sheer cliff that extends 25 km (15 miles) north to south, and rises as high as 280 m (920 feet).[1] To the south, the limestone mass breaks up into separate spires known as tower karst. In the center of the plateau, eons of rainfall have dissolved the limestone away in deep gorges, and sometimes redeposited it in ribbons of flowstone. In places where the chalky upper layers have been completely eroded, the harder base rock has been etched into channels and ridges known as tsingy

Formation géologique exceptionnel, les tsingy rouge de Madagascar sont situé à une trentaine de kilomètres au nord d'Ambilobe ,près de Diego Suarez) dans le parc de l'Ankarana, au milieux des rivières, canyons et autre forêt tropical sèche ou verte.
Situés dans la région de Diego Suarez, Les Tsingy Rouges sont le résultat d'un phénomène géologique unique à Madagascar. L'érosion du grès rouge a entraîné la formation de ces structures éphémères sculptées au gré des caprices du vent et de la pluie. La composition de la roche permet des jeux de lumières époustouflants tout au long de la journée en fonction de l'orientation du soleil.

First we took the boat from Nosy Be Harbour to Ankify -12.000 AR -around 45min ride- then we fought our way up to Diego Suarez -with taxi brousse-trucks-.Ankify to Ambanja -5000 AR to Ambilobe -10.000AR to Ankarana -5000 AR- to Diego Suraez -15.000 AR -the road is realy bad!- We stopped in Ankarana -next udpate-i highly recommend to to that. In Diego we stayed at Belle Aventure Hotel -70.000 to 1000.000 AR a night -worth it!-.

A 50 km au sud de Diego Suarez (Antsiranana) et 17 km de piste (pour cette dernière, compter 1h45 de trajet, en 4X4 si possible, surtout en période de pluie), vous tomberez sur un site de toute beauté. Formés par l'érosion et la pluie. Sur cette matière argileuse et tendre, le mélange de différents oxydes ont donné naissance aux Tsingy. Ils rosissent, rougissent, ocrissent et orangissent selon la lumière du ciel et du soleil. Ce site disparaîtra dans plusieurs dizaines d' années du fait de l' érosion. Alors si vous avez la possibilité, n' hésitez pas à venir voir ce spectacle que seul l' Île Rouge, la Grande Île, Madagascar sait nous offrir !!

Visit Madagascar: The Astonishing Red Tsingy Sandstone Canyon
The red Tsingy are located at the edge of Analamerana National Park on a terrible drive from Antsiranana/Diego Suarez.
This alien-looking sight is made of small sandstone needles (Tsingy) located, and restricted, inside a small canyon.
The beautiful red color gleams brilliantly in the sun and are constantly eroding into new Tsingys. It is definitely worth the bone-jarring drive!
