De Wildt Cheetah Sanctuary
n the last few decades the De Wildt Cheetah Sanctuary has played a crucial role in the survival of the magnificent cheetah and it remains a crucial centre for breeding African animals that are on the brink of extinction. You can visit this unique wildlife enclave in the foothills of the Magaliesberg mountain range in the North West province.
The centre was opened in 1971 by Ann van Dyk who volunteered her parents' chicken farm when the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa ran out of space to continue their captive breeding programmes. It is now a world-renowned research centre and well worth a tour.
To its credit this South African cheetah sanctuary has managed to breed about 600 cheetahs since the inception of the programme, when the total wild population in South Africa was estimated at only 700.

Three captive male Cheetahs feeding
The Ann Van Dyk Cheetah Centre at De Wildt west of Pretoria in South Africa studies and breeds Cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) and other threatened wildlife species to aid in their conservation. The Cheetah is a large cat that occurs mainly in north, southern and eastern Africa. Cheetahs are listed as vulnerable by the IUCN, with only about 7,000 estimated to be left in the wild. Cheetahs are unusual amongst wild cats – they cannot retract their claws, and are active during the day. Cheetahs are the world’s fastest land mammal, and can accelerate from standing up to 112 km/hour (70 mph), although they cannot maintain such speeds for long. The De Wildt Cheetah Centre has bred more than 800 Cheetahs, most of whom have been released into the wild. However, sometimes captive-bred Cheetahs do not adapt to fending for themselves, and have to be captured and returned to the Centre to prevent them dying of starvation in the African bush. These three captive-bred male Cheetahs did not succeed when released, and now live in a large, naturally vegetated enclosure. They are fed each day on minced meat by their keeper Botha, with visitors to the Centre watching on from the safety of a safari vehicle.

We wanted to focus on animals that are endangered, namely the cheetah and the wild dog and to breed them and to ensure their long term survival in the wild so that our children's children will be able to see animals like the cheetah, the wild dog, like the vultures that are being eradicated.

STORYLINE
Very few people get to see the world's fastest land animal running at top speed.
But a wildlife centre in South Africa has just started cheetah races to allow the public a rare look at the beauty of these animals in full flight.
They have set up a mechanical rabbit, similar to those used in dog racing, around a course that shows off the cheetah's running skills.
In order to hunt its prey, the cheetah (acinonyx jubatus) gets up to speed through a combination of running and leaping.
The light-boned cheetah can accelerate from 0 to 45 miles (72 kilometres ) per hour in two seconds.
They can reach a top speed of nearly 70 miles (110 kilometres) per hour.
The De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Trust is a research and breeding reserve for cheetahs, wild dogs and other endangered species near Pretoria in the North West Province.
The trust launched this race initiative to educate people and raise awareness about species.
School students have been invited to come to study the cheetahs and watch them in action.
The De Wildt Cheetah Centre, established in 1971, is owned and run by Ann van Dyk who is acknowledged as a world authority on the cheetah.
Over the years, nearly 600 cheetah cubs have been born at De Wildt - a dramatic contrast to the days when the cheetah population of South Africa was estimated at a mere 700.

Into Africa: Joburg / Misty Hills - 1/15
We arrived in Joburg late afternoon. After picking up our car with manual transmission (it was supposed to be automatic because I can't drive stick) we drove past Joburg to Misty Hills for our first night with dinner at Carnivore Restaurant. Basically, you get to see us eat some non-traditional fare such as zebra and crocodile. Excellent food. Excellent service. It was dark when we arrived making it a bit difficult to figure out where to park. The rooms were comfortable and well-appointed.
UP EBIT JCP 2019 Group 200 Lion and Cheetah Sanctuary
-This was a project of the Community-Based Project (JCP) of the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology of the University of Pretoria.
-The project took place in Pretoria. It consisted of four group members. We spent four days at the sanctuary, spending everyday on a different activity.
We all thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would recommend it to anyone looking to work with animals. The entire environment created an unforgettable experience, not to mention the constant support from the guides whilst working on the project.
You can find any information regarding the sanctuary at this site.
