Tearful wife fears husband was among 39 stowaways found dead in Essex
A container in which 39 migrants were found dead was part of a convoy of three lorries, it has been claimed - as two more suspected victims are named. Relatives of the suspected victims say more than 100 migrants were being brought to the UK on the lorries, but only two are believed to have completed their trips. The third, which was carrying the dead migrants, was delayed, according to Sky News. It is not known where the other two containers went.It comes as two more victims, Anna Bui Thi Nhung, 19, and Nguyen Dinh Tu, both from Vietnam, were also named as suspected victims.Pham Thi Tra My, 26, and Nguyen Dinh Luong, 20, are also suspected among the dead, with the former sending her mother a series of harrowing messages telling her she 'loved her' and was 'dying because she couldn't breathe'.One of the newly named suspected victims, Nguyen Dinh Tu, had a few months ago asked his wife Hoang Thi Thuong to help him raise £11,000 ($14,000) to cover the cost of an illicit trip from Germany to the United Kingdom.'I lost contact with him on October 21,' Thuong said with tears in her eyes. 'I have a big debt to pay, no hope, and no energy to do anything'. Hoang Thi Thuong, wife of Nguyen Dinh Tu, a Vietnamese suspected victim in a truck container in UK, holds her son Nguyen Dinh Dan at their home in Nghe An province, Vietnam Anna Bui Thi Nhung (right) and Nguyen Dinh Tu (left), both from Vietnam, have both now been named as suspected victims. The family Pham Thi Tra My, 26, say she paid people smugglers £30,000 to travel to the UK via China 'in search of a better life.' A human rights worker, who spoke with the family, has said they were struggling with debt when she decided to make the perilous journey In a photo released by the family of Nguyen Dinh Luong shows Nguyen, 20, posing for a selfie in this undated photo. Luong's family fears that he may be among the 39 people found dead in the back of a container truck in southeastern England Relatives of Anna Bui Thi Nhung, a Vietnamese suspected victim in a truck container in UK, read news about her at her home in Nghe An province, Vietnam Police and forensic officers investigate a lorry in which 39 bodies were discovered in the trailer on Wednesday. Sources have now claimed that bloodied hand marks were found insideTu's father said relatives in the United Kingdom had told him that Tu was inside the truck, and had been planning to pick him up.'They were supposed to pick him up at the drop-off point but they called and said Tu was in that truck,' Tu's father, Nguyen Dinh Sat, said.'I haven't heard anything from my son'. The mother and a sister of Anna Bui Thi Nhung cried as they set up an altar with incense and a photo of the missing 19-year-old where family and friends can pray at their home in Do Thanh village. The family heard from a friend living in the U.K. that 'Nhung is one of the victims,' said one of Nhung's relatives, who was visiting the missing teen's despaired mother. Episode 10 - Living History in Cambodia and Vietnam
Phnom Penh-based web supporter Jason and his Cambodian driver Sok Kheun take Alex to Tuol Sleng, the notorious political prison of the Pol Pot regime, where blood-splattered walls, torture instruments and meticulous photos of the doomed still haunt the former high school. The sombre visit is followed by a trip to the Chong Ek “killing fields” outside the capital, where Alex is joined by another Cambodian who recounts stories of the harrowing abuse while on a walk amongst the mass graves.
The suffering of the Cambodians is made personal back at Jason’s home when a nanny and even a translator recount their heart-wrenching stories of loss and survival.
Alex takes a scooter trip to the local market to buy some fresh ingredients, then assists Jason’s cook in making the famous Tom Kha coconut soup back home.
Jason suggests a trip down to the gulf coast and soon him and Alex are riding jet skis to remote Bamboo Island. This hidden, deserted piece of paradise provides a full day of R&R.
Returning to the capital, Alex accompanies Jason in his charity work, which includes a soup kitchen right next to a garbage dump and another school outside of town. Alex meets some people actually living on the dump before lending a helping hand in the soup kitchen. Finally, Jason springs for a bus ticket and it’s onwards via bus to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam.
Arriving in Ho Chi Minh, Alex realizes that government regulations prohibit him from staying in private residences unless registered with the police, but web supporters point him to a local NGO for shelter. Wildlife At Risk (WAR) takes him in for a night at their city office. The next day Alex accompanies a WAR volunteer out of town to the Cu Chi area where the NGO has their animal rehab shelter. Alex pitches in with duties in and around the shelter in exchange for a meal and a roof over his head, finding out about Asian animal conservation issues along the way.
The historical Cu Chi Tunnels are just nearby so Alex and his friend from WAR explore this Vietnam War-era battleground and secret tunnel system.
After heading back to Ho Chi Minh, Alex meets a bar owner who suggests a visit to the beach town of Pho Quoc to celebrate the upcoming Lunar (Chinese) New Year. Alex then sneaks onto an all-night train, avoiding the ticket collectors by walking up and down the length of the train the entire night.
Alex arrives in the morning to realize that he’s landed in Nha Trang, a beach town completely on the other side of the country from his original destination. He heads to the beach and finds a hotel that will allow him to stay in exchange for cleaning - - the bathrooms.
Alex borrows a scooter to explore Nha Trang and the beautiful coastline. He also learns that web supporters in the States are offering to fly him back to San Francisco. To make it back to Ho Chi Minh he needs a job, so he convinces a diving shop to hire him on their daily run, but he can only start working after the New Year’s celebrations. The good news, however is that the dive shop gives him some drink tickets for the upcoming parties!
Lunar New Year proves to be wild in Nha Trang, Vietnam. Alex starts early with snake blood sake, hangs out with fire-eating, sword-swallowing performers, wades through a sea of mopeds to catch the fireworks and bar hops his way to an unforgettable night on the beach.

The Vietnam War: Reasons for Failure - Why the U.S. Lost
In the post-war era, Americans struggled to absorb the lessons of the military intervention. About the book:
As General Maxwell Taylor, one of the principal architects of the war, noted, First, we didn't know ourselves. We thought that we were going into another Korean War, but this was a different country. Secondly, we didn't know our South Vietnamese allies... And we knew less about North Vietnam. Who was Ho Chi Minh? Nobody really knew. So, until we know the enemy and know our allies and know ourselves, we'd better keep out of this kind of dirty business. It's very dangerous.
Some have suggested that the responsibility for the ultimate failure of this policy [America's withdrawal from Vietnam] lies not with the men who fought, but with those in Congress... Alternatively, the official history of the United States Army noted that tactics have often seemed to exist apart from larger issues, strategies, and objectives. Yet in Vietnam the Army experienced tactical success and strategic failure... The...Vietnam War...legacy may be the lesson that unique historical, political, cultural, and social factors always impinge on the military...Success rests not only on military progress but on correctly analyzing the nature of the particular conflict, understanding the enemy's strategy, and assessing the strengths and weaknesses of allies. A new humility and a new sophistication may form the best parts of a complex heritage left to the Army by the long, bitter war in Vietnam.
U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger wrote in a secret memo to President Gerald Ford that in terms of military tactics, we cannot help draw the conclusion that our armed forces are not suited to this kind of war. Even the Special Forces who had been designed for it could not prevail. Even Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara concluded that the achievement of a military victory by U.S. forces in Vietnam was indeed a dangerous illusion.
Doubts surfaced as to the effectiveness of large-scale, sustained bombing. As Army Chief of Staff Harold Keith Johnson noted, if anything came out of Vietnam, it was that air power couldn't do the job. Even General William Westmoreland admitted that the bombing had been ineffective. As he remarked, I still doubt that the North Vietnamese would have relented.
The inability to bomb Hanoi to the bargaining table also illustrated another U.S. miscalculation. The North's leadership was composed of hardened communists who had been fighting for independence for thirty years. They had defeated the French, and their tenacity as both nationalists and communists was formidable. Ho Chi Minh is quoted as saying, You can kill ten of my men for every one I kill of yours...But even at these odds you will lose and I will win.
The Vietnam War called into question the U.S. Army doctrine. Marine Corps General Victor H. Krulak heavily criticised Westmoreland's attrition strategy, calling it wasteful of American lives... with small likelihood of a successful outcome. In addition, doubts surfaced about the ability of the military to train foreign forces.
Between 1965 and 1975, the United States spent $111 billion on the war ($686 billion in FY2008 dollars). This resulted in a large federal budget deficit.
More than 3 million Americans served in the Vietnam War, some 1.5 million of whom actually saw combat in Vietnam. James E. Westheider wrote that At the height of American involvement in 1968, for example, there were 543,000 American military personnel in Vietnam, but only 80,000 were considered combat troops. Conscription in the United States had been controlled by the President since World War II, but ended in 1973.
By war's end, 58,220 American soldiers had been killed, more than 150,000 had been wounded, and at least 21,000 had been permanently disabled. According to Dale Kueter, Sixty-one percent of those killed were age 21 or younger. Of those killed in combat, 86.3 percent were white, 12.5 percent were black and the remainder from other races. The youngest American KIA in the war was PFC Dan Bullock, who had falsified his birth certificate and enlisted in the US Marines at age 14 and who was killed in combat at age 15. Approximately 830,000 Vietnam veterans suffered symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder. An estimated 125,000 Americans fled to Canada to avoid the Vietnam draft, and approximately 50,000 American servicemen deserted. In 1977, United States President Jimmy Carter granted a full, complete and unconditional pardon to all Vietnam-era draft dodgers. The Vietnam War POW/MIA issue, concerning the fate of U.S. service personnel listed as missing in action, persisted for many years after the war's conclusion.

SUMMARY
=======
Richard Milhous Nixon (January 9, 1913 – April 22, 1994) was the 37th President of the United States from 1969 until 1974 and the only president to resign from the position. He had previously served as the 36th Vice President of the United States from 1953 to 1961, and prior to that as both a U.S. Representative and Senator from California.
Nixon was born in Yorba Linda, California. After completing his undergraduate studies at Whittier College, he graduated from Duke University School of Law in 1937 and returned to California to practice law. He and his wife Pat moved to Washington in 1942 to work for the federal government. He subsequently served on active duty in the U.S. Navy Reserve during World War II. Nixon was elected to the House of Representatives in 1946 and to the Senate in 1950. His pursuit of the Hiss Case established his reputation as a leading anti-communist and elevated him to national prominence. He was the running mate of Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Republican Party presidential nominee in the 1952 election. Nixon served for eight years as Vice President, becoming the second-youngest vice president in history at age 40. He waged an unsuccessful presidential campaign in 1960, narrowly losing to John F. Kennedy, and lost a race for Governor of California to Pat Brown in 1962. In 1968, he ran for the presidency again and was elected, defeating incumbent Vice President Hubert Humphrey.
Nixon ended American involvement in the war in Vietnam in 1973 and brought the American POWs home, and ended the military draft. Nixon's visit to China in 1972 eventually led to diplomatic relations between the two nations and he initiated détente and the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with the Soviet Union the same year. His administration generally transferred power from Washington D.C. to the states. He imposed wage and price controls for ninety days, enforced desegregation of Southern schools, established the Environmental Protection Agency and began the War on Cancer. Nixon also presided over the Apollo 11 moon landing, which signaled the end of the moon race. He was reelected in one of the largest electoral landslides in U.S. history in 1972 when he defeated George McGovern.
In his second term, Nixon ordered an airlift to resupply Israeli losses in the Yom Kippur War, resulting in the restart of the Middle East peace process and an oil crisis at home. The Nixon administration supported a coup in Chile that ousted the government of Salvador Allende and propelled Augusto Pinochet to power. By late 1973, the Watergate scandal escalated, costing Nixon much of his political support. On August 9, 1974, he resigned in the face of almost certain impeachment and removal from office. After his resignation, he was issued a controversial pardon by his successor, Gerald Ford. In 20 years of retirement, Nixon wrote nine books and undertook many foreign trips, helping to rehabilitate his image into that of elder statesman. He suffered a debilitating stroke on April 18, 1994 and died four days later at the age of 81.

The United States presidential election of 1968 was the 46th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 5, 1968. The Republican nominee, former Vice-President Richard Nixon, won the election over the Democratic nominee, incumbent Vice-President Hubert Humphrey. Nixon ran on a campaign that promised to restore law and order to the nation's cities, torn by riots and crime.
Analysts have argued the election of 1968 is a realigning election as it permanently disrupted the New Deal Coalition that had dominated presidential politics for 36 years. Coming four years after Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson won in a historic landslide, the election saw the incumbent president forced out of the race and a Republican elected for the first time in twelve years. It was a wrenching national experience, conducted during a year of violence that included the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., and subsequent race riots across the nation, the assassination of Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, widespread opposition to the Vietnam War across university campuses, and violent confrontations between police and anti-war protesters at the 1968 Democratic National Convention as the Democratic party split again and again.
