அவர்கள் தேவைக்காக நம்மை பயிரிடச் சொல்லி பின்பு நம்மையே நுகர வைத்து அதன் தேவையை அதிகப்படுத்தி லாபம் ஈட்டினார்கள். ஆனால் சுதந்திரத்திற்கு பிறகு சர்வதேச அளவில் தேயிலையின் தேவை அதிகரித்தையொட்டி இந்திய அரசு தேயிலை பயிரிடுவதை ஊக்கப்படுத்தியது. மலைவாழ் மக்களுக்கு அதிக வேலைவாய்ப்பையும் அவர்களுக்கு வாழ்வாதாரத்தையும் தேயிலை அளித்து வருகிறது.

கி.மு மூன்றாம் நூற்றாண்டில் தென்மேற்கு சீனாவில் ஷாங் பேரரசர்கள் தேநீரை மருந்தாக பயன்படுத்தியதற்கு வரலாற்று ஆவணங்கள் உள்ளன.
கி.மு.800 களில் தேநீர் அருந்தும் பழக்கம் ஜப்பானுக்கு பரவியது. ஜப்பானிலிருந்தே ஐரோப்பிய நாடுகளுக்கு தேயிலை பரவியது.
17ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் தான் பிரிட்டனில் தேநீர் மிக பிரபலமடைந்தது. இதன் பிறகே இந்தியாவில் தேயிலை உற்பத்தியை பிரிட்டிஷார் தொடங்கினர்.
முதன் முதலில் இந்தியாவில் தேயிலையை பயிரிட்டவர் மணிராம் தேவான்
தேயிலையை பற்றி படிக்கக்கூடிய கலைக்கு டேசியோகிராபி (Tasseography) என்று பெயர்.
சீனா, ஜப்பான், வியட்நாம் ஆகிய நாடுகளில் தேநீர் விழா நடத்தப்படுகிறது.
மத விழாக்கள், திருமணம் போன்றவற்றின் போது தேநீர் விருந்து நடத்தப்படுகிறது.
சீனர்கள் இதை `ஆர்ட் ஆஃப் டீ’ என்று அழைக்கிறார்கள்.
இந்தியாவில் இரண்டாவது அதிகம் வேலைவாய்ப்புகளை வழங்கக்கூடிய துறை தேயிலை துறை.
ரயில் நிலையங்களிலும் பொது இடங்களிலும் தேநீர் அருந்துவதை ஊக்கப்படுத்தும் வகையில் பிரிட்டிஷார் விளம்பரப்படுத்தினர். 1920-ம் ஆண்டுக்கு பிறகுதான் இந்தியாவில் தேநீர் அருந்துவது மிகவும் பரவலானது.

We went on Oct 3 to Mullai Illam, the Hostel for the First Years. As soon as we landed up there, seniors were there to rag us. I was lucky enough for not getting caught on the first day though. I was allocated room number 73 which had 3 other guys - Suresh Babu from Kunnathur (native of KPS!), Senthil Kumar from Muthupet & Sridhar from Trichy. Sridhar's elder bro was doing his final year Chemical and so he was with him most of the time in the Final Years' hostel. Later, he was to bring the fifth guy Sivaraja, his friend from Trichy to our already cramped up room. It was a great night to remember, talking the night away with Babu & Pettai (Senthil's eventual nick name). Didn't know then that we 3 guys will be staying all the 4 years together. (Govind was to join us 3 from the Second Year onwards)
The first few days of going to the college was like a ritual. Everyone after having breeakfast will line up at the entrance and the crowd will grow. As the time approached 8, we all walked slowly towards our classes with our eyes looking down & acting as if we didn't hear the jeers when we crossed the Seniors' Hostels. It should have been a sight to watch, right? lol.
Dozens of stories can be told of Mullai Illam & the life there. It was some half a kilometre away from the classes and we soon found it difficult to walk to and fro. I got the old cycle of Ramu Mama's (the one who is now down with the heart attack) from Trichy. My driver happened to be Anand, the Mech guy from Trichy who was my best Mecho buddy. It was fun riding with him as he knew many first year girls from Trichy. It was a time when an odd passing smile from a girl was the ultimate thing thinkable and was discussed in Hostel rooms til the next smile happened.
There were 2 messes, one each for Veg & Non-Veg, me opting for the Veg till the final year.

Annamalai University is one of Asia's largest public residential universities located in Annamalai Nagar, Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, India. The university is spread across 1,500 acres acres in Chidambaram and offers courses of higher education in science, engineering, humanities, agriculture and arts.
The university also provides more than 500 courses through distance education. The Directorate of Distance Education of Annamalai University offers education to those people who are unable to attend the campus but who desire to study. It is credited with the largest enrollment in India and is well equipped with computers and other infrastructure, separate teaching faculty and administration, study centers, and computer training centers to serve its students. It was the first institution in India to offer postgraduate degree programmes in Applied Psychology, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Bioinformatics and Law through distance education.
