Annamalaiyar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the deity Shiva, located at the base of Annamalai hills in the town of Thiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu, India. Shiva is known by devotees as Annamalayar or Arunachaleswarar. And this is believed to be the largest temple in the world dedicated to Shiva.
Thiruvannamalai is the capital of Saivism. The South Indian deity Siva is the God of all countries. Annamalaiannal is the most sacred of the names of the manifestation of Lord Siva.
Annamalaiyar Temple Eastern Gopuram (Raja Gopuram) Four large unpainted gopurams, one of each cardinal point, front of approaches, with the eastern side rising 13 storeys and an astonishing 66m. The temple covers some 10 hectares, this vast temple is one of the largest of India. Gopurams (East Gopuram) that surrounds the temple and is about 220 feet in height. The other three are located in the other three directions.
Temple with all 9 Gopurams. There are four big Gopurams on the Temple’s outer boundary; Raja Gopura (East), Pey Gopura (West), Thiru Manjana Gopura (South) and Ammani Amman Gopura (North). Historians say that the western Gopura is the oldest.
Western Gopura was constructed first and then followed construction of the South, East and North Gopurams.
Four large Gopurams on the outside wall, there are also three small Gopurams on the inner boundary in the directions of south, west and north—known as Kattai (smaller) Gopurams. Additionally there are two separate Gopurams at the east namely, Vallala Gopura and Kili Gopura.
Arunachaleswarar Temple is via the east gate i.e. the Raja Gopura. The Gopura was built by Krishnadevaraya in 1516 A.D., and completed by the King of Tanjore, Sevappa Naicken in 1590. The Raja Gopura is 11 stories in height (217 feet) and is the tallest Gopura in this Temple. The Gopura of the Tanjore Temple built by Chola Rajaraja is 216 feet in height and it is believed that King Krishnadevaraya intentionally built the Raja Gopura at Arunachaleswarar Temple one foot higher so as to eclipse the big tower in Tanjore Temple. The Raja Gopura provides the main entrance to Arunachaleswarar Temple.In the Temple to the left of the main Gopura, is also a statue of the Gopura Ganapati.The southern tower of the outermost court is the Thirumanjana Gopura.
Girivalam, is another important event that is conducted in this town during full moon night. On this date, people walk a stretch of 15 KM around the temple (and mountain) during the night. Lord Annamalaiyar is worshipped. Arunam means sun and denotes the red colour of fire. Asalam means Giri or malai (mountain). Shiva and Parvathi are woken up and Arunachaleswarar is taken on a procession to the main temple and Parvathi is taken to Unnamalaiamman temple. Then the first pooja starts every day in the morning and conducted at regular intervals and timings for a total number of six times a day.
Five to Ten lakh devotees go round this Annamalai hill every full moon day and it around 13 kilometres in distance. This practice of doing Pradakshina regularly helps the devotees to stay spiritually, mentally and physically fit.

Parvathamalai is located at Thenmahadevamangalam village which is about 20 kms off Polur. Polur is some 35 kms north of Thiru Annamalai (Arunachala). There's a very powerful Lord Shiva temple at the top of the Parvathamalai hill. Devas and spiritual beings from other lokas worship here every night. This is a place visited by numerous Siddhas for Shiva worship. Reaching the hill is somewhat difficult. Hence it is better to start early in the morning and return as early as possible. During the Pournami full moon, this hill attracts a lot of devotees. This is a place vested with a lot of spiritual power.

Parvathamalai is located near Thenmadimangalam Village, 20 kms from Polur. It is part of Javadhi Hills and accessible through Kadaladi village 25 kms north of Tiruvannamalai or through Thenmadimangalam. Parvatham means mountain and Parvatha Malai as it is called, connotes “Hill of Hills” or “Queen of Hills”. Parvathamalai presents eight different shapes from eight directions around the hill.
At the summit of the Hill is the Mouna Guruswamy Ashram and more importantly a very powerful Temple at which resides the Siva aspect in the form of Lord Mallikarjuna (i.e. White Jasmine) and the Sakthi aspect in the form of Parvatha Rani or Parvathammal. Parvathammal is also called Lordess Brahmarambika (and Maragathambika). Inside the sanctum sanctorum there are also idols dedicated to Sri Ganesha and Lord Murugan.
A Temple at this site is believed to have existed for the last 2000 years although it is not known exactly when the current Temple was constructed at the top of Parvathamalai. However a record (Malai Padu Kadaam) shows that King Maa Mannan who was ruling that area, during the year 300 A.D used to visit a Temple (at this site) frequently and worship Lord Shiva and the Goddess. It is said that 2000 years ago great yogis (Siddhas) constructed a Temple at the top of the hill for doing meditation.
Reaching the top of Parvathamalai is an arduous task. It is a vertical mountain over 4,000 feet in height that has iron rod steps, track steps, ladder steps, and sky steps (agayapadi) not found at other such sacred mountains. The Kadapaarai Padhai section of the climb up the Hill is considered to be the toughest part of the trek. This part which is punctuated by iron rods drilled into the rocks and chains to assist during the sharp ascent is also only wide enough to accommodate one-way traffic. Thus one has to raise one’s voice voice from the bottom of this section and wait for acknowledgment from the other end before starting to climb the Kadapaarai Padhai section.
One of the legends associated with Parvathamalai states that when Lord Hanuman carried Sanjeevini hill to revive Laxman a piece of Sanjeevenimalai fell at this spot. For this reason this particular area is famous for various herbs and shrubs which can cure the deadliest diseases. It is not just herbs that can cure disease but it is thought that the breeze alone from the Hill wafting through the plants and shrubbery is enough to help cure illnesses.
Parvathamalai is located near to Thenmathimangalam village, which is 20 kms from Polur in Thiruvannamalai District, Tamilnadu. Polur is 35kms(approx)from Thiruvannamalai(Arunachala).The hill(Parvatamalai) is 3500 feet(Approx) high from the sea level. On the top of the hill, Lord Mallikarjunaswamy(Sivan) temple is located, which is believed to be 2000 years old.
This hill is full of herbal(mooligai) plants. There is another route from Kadaladi,to reach Parvathamalai, which is shorter and when compared to Thenmathimagalam route. Thenmathimagalam route is lenghty but easier to reach the top of Parvathamalai. However,both routes joins at a common point, and it is a single route from there which leads to Lord Mallikarjunaswamy temple on top of the hill. There is a ashram for Mounaguruswamy near to the temple. Annadhanam will be provided in this ashram for devotees.During the Pournami full moon day, this hill attracts a lot of devotees.
