The 6,894 square foot building houses exhibits and artifacts, gift shop and multi-use rooms. The centre is opened from mid-May to mid-October and has had 400,000 visitors since July 28, 1989.
The Anne Murray Centre showcases the incredible life and times of Springhill’s internationally acclaimed songstress Anne Murray. Step into the remarkable story of this Canadian icon and take an intimate look at her humble beginnings, flight to fame, and enduring contributions to the world of music.
Anne Murray grew up in the small Nova Scotia coal mining town of Springhill, far, far away from the glitter and glamour of Hollywood. Yet her breathtaking flight to fame has made Anne Murray a household name in entertainment capitals of the world, and she has amassed more musical awards and accolades than almost any female singer in history.
The original initiative for the Anne Murray Centre came from volunteer members of the Springhill Industrial Commission. They envisaged such a Centre as a catalyst to stimulate the economy of the community, and promote awareness of the music of Nova Scotia and Canada through the public presentation of Anne Murray’s life and career achievements.
The Anne Murray Centre has fulfilled Anne's wish to contribute in a unique manner to her hometown, which has suffered through two mine disasters and two devastating fires since 1956.

Anne Murray's Mother
Anne Murray's Mother (a true story)
I used to drive taxi in Springhill N.S. for Matthews Taxi (Bedford and Deanna Matthews) Anne Murray's Mother was one of our clients so she'd call to get a drive to her church group meeting the best I recall. She used to go to her meetings and share the cab fair with her friends. I was so tickled by this I never forgot, so here it is in a song. You never forget where you come from, even Marion Murray was frugal with her money. Marion had lots of stories, a very kind women who just fit in with every other Springhiller just like Anne does. Being it Anne's 30th for her Anne Murray Centre. This song is to thank her as she has been a big influence on my music. Thank you Anne.
Anne Murray's Mother (Lyrics)
Verse 1
Marion in my rear view mirror staring back at me
Anne looks today like her mother did back in the 1983
The glowing face a Snowbird smile, a Springhiller indeed.
A friend of ours we'll always cherish now she is flying free
Chorus
Spread your wings fly up high.... bring the Spring breezes home
Snowbird.... Sing your song..... winters been oh so long
Hop inside and ride with me in Matthew's Taxi.....
Home at nine pull down the blind I'll see again next week
Instrumental
Verse 2
It's been thirty years since The Anne Murray Centre's been in town
The Snow Bird's flown home now, where her legacy can be found
A miners hat off to her lets sing a coal mining song
A treasure we'll always cherish built solid on Springhills ground.
Chorus
Verse 3
The yellow house on the hilltop through the window I can see
Marion staring at a picture she held up for me to see.
A glow of pride a wave goodbye until next Tuesday.
Marion would drive off with me and share the fare with three.
Chorus

✿⊱╮♥JUST ANOTHER WOMAN IN LOVE - ANNE MURRAY✿⊱╮♥
Anne Murray -- Just Another Woman In Love
I'm strong, I'm sure, I'm in control, a lady with a plan
Believing that life is a neat little package I hold in my hand
I've got it together, they call me the girl who knows just what to say and do
Still I fumble and fall, run into the wall, 'cause when it comes to you, I'm
CHORUS
Just another woman in love, a kid out of school
A fire out of control, just another fool
You touch me and I'm weak, I'm a feather in the wind
And I can't wait to feel you touching me again
With you I'm just another woman, just another woman in love
So pardon me if I should stare and tremble like a child
That wanting you look all over your face is driving me wild
I'm just what you make me, can't wait 'till you take me and set all my feelin's free
I know that you can, so come be my man, tonight I wanna be
CHORUS X 2 with FADE in middle of the second
Anne Murray | Biography
Morna Anne Murray, CC, ONS (born June 20, 1945) is a Grammy Award-winning Canadian singer. Murray has performed in Pop, Country and Adult Contemporary styles. So far, her albums have sold over 54 million copies.
Murray was the first Canadian female solo singer to reach #1 on the U.S. charts, and also the first to earn a gold record for one of her signature songs, Snowbird (1970). She is often cited as the woman who paved the way for other Canadian international success stories such as Céline Dion, Sarah McLachlan and Shania Twain. She is also the first woman and the first Canadian to win Album of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards for her 1984 album A Little Good News.
Murray has always resided in Canada and now lives in Toronto, but spends most summers in Nova Scotia. On May 11, 2007, Murray was named the world's best female celebrity golfer by Golf For Women magazine, sporting an 11 handicap.
Early career
Murray was born on June 20, 1945, in the small town of Springhill, Nova Scotia. Her father, James Carson Murray, was a doctor and her mother, Marion Murray, was a registered nurse.
After expressing an early interest in music, she studied piano for six years; by age fifteen, she began taking voice lessons. Every Saturday morning, she took a bus ride from Springhill to Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia, for her singing lesson with her teacher, Karen Mills.
Following high school, Murray spent a year at Mount Saint Vincent University, a women's college in Halifax, Nova Scotia. After dropping out of Mount Saint Vincent University she went to the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, New Brunswick, where she studied Physical Education.
In 1965 she appeared on the UNB record The Groove (500 pressed). She sang two songs on the record, including Unchained Melody. On the label her name was misspelled Anne Murry.
Murray was encouraged to audition for the 1960s CBC music television show Singalong Jubilee; unfortunately the cast was full at the time. Two years later she received a call from Singalong Jubilee co-host and associate producer, Bill Langstroth, and asked to return for a second audition. Anne was subsequently cast for the show.
After a summer of singing, Murray began teaching Physical Education at a high school in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. However after one year of teaching, she was offered a spot on a television show, Let's Go and returned to Singalong Jubilee. A Singalong Jubilee soundtrack was released by Arc Records, one of Canada's first record labels. The show's musical director, Brian Ahern, advised Murray that she should record a solo album; her first album, What About Me, was produced by Ahern in Toronto and released in 1968 on the Arc label.

Murray's debut album was on the Canadian Arc label, entitled What About Me (Arc AS 782). The lead single was the cut of the same name, was written by Scott MacKenzie, and was a sizable Canadian radio hit. The project was produced by Brian Ahern and Bill Gilliland, and covered songs by Joni Mitchell, Ken Tobias and John Denver. After a year-long stint on Arc, Anne switched to Capitol Records in 1969 to record her second album, This Way Is My Way, which was released in the fall of the same year. This album featured the single that launched her successful career, Snowbird, which became a #1 hit in Canada. Snowbird became a surprise hit on the U.S. charts as well, reaching #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1970. It was also the first of eight #1 Adult Contemporary hits for Murray. The song led to Murray being awarded the first Gold record ever given to a Canadian artist in the United States. One of the most successful female artists of our time. Murray became the demand of several television appearances in Canada and the United States, eventually becoming a regular on the hit U.S. TV series The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour.

Anne Murray - You Needed Me lyrics
I cried a tear
You wiped it dry
I was confused
You cleared my mind
I sold my soul
You bought it back for me
And held me up and gave me dignity
Somehow you needed me.
Chorus
You gave me strength
To stand alone again
To face the world
Out on my own again
You put me high upon a pedestal
So high that I could almost see eternity
You needed me
You needed me
And I can't believe it's you I can't believe it's true
I needed you and you were there
And I'll never leave, why should I leave
I'd be a fool
'Cause I've finally found someone who really cares
You held my hand
When it was cold
When I was lost
You took me home
You gave me hope
When I was at the end
And turned my lies
Back into truth again
You even called me friend
Repeat Chorus
You needed me
You needed me
By the time she was seven years old, she was singing all the time. For over thirty years, her unique voice and heartwarming style have made her a household name. She led the way for a generation of Canadian divas, who have also conquered the world - Celine Dion, Shania Twain, k.d. lang, Alanis Morissette and Sarah McLachlan. They all followed in her footsteps - Canada's Songbird, Anne Murray.
Over the years, Anne's recordings have seldom been off the charts. She has sold close to fifty million albums and has won countless awards. However, Anne Murray is more than just a Canadian icon. Her warm voice and well-loved songs have become woven into the fabric of our lives. Anne's songs celebrate our important milestones - childhood, a first love, the wedding day, parenthood and loss. They comfort us and inspire us; they bring joy and uplift us. Anne's songs are forever in our hearts.
Morna Anne Murray was born on June 20, 1945 in the small coal-mining town of Springhill, Nova Scotia. Her father, James Carson Murray, was the town doctor and her mother, Marion, was a registered nurse, who decided to focus her life on raising her family.
Anne learned determination and perseverance from her parents and from growing up with five brothers - David, Daniel, Harold, Stewart and Bruce. When Anne remembers her childhood, she remembers singing - her father singing while he was shaving, her mother singing around the house, and her brothers, singing together:
As far back as I can remember, I sang. The first time I became aware that I could sing maybe a little better than others, I was driving in a car. I was nine years old, and I was singing along to the radio. My aunt-to-be was in the front seat and she turned to my mother and said 'My, Marion, she has a beautiful voice.' I later found out that Aunt Kay was tone deaf, but I guess it doesn't mean she couldn't detect talent! I often think that perhaps the reason I became a successful singer was that, as a kid, I could never do anything as well as my brothers. I wanted to do something better than they did.
Anne loved music. It was the age of rock and roll, and she sang along with all her favourites - Buddy Holly, Bobby Darin and Connie Francis. However, Anne was also inspired by a wide variety of musical styles, including the classics, country, gospel, folk, and crooners such as Patti Page, Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney. She loved them all.
Anne studied piano for six years. At age 15, she began taking classical voice lessons. (Her younger brother, Bruce, would soon also follow this path. Bruce went on to perform and tour with Anne in the 1980's.) Every Saturday morning, Anne took a two-hour bus ride from Springhill to Tatamagouche and back, for her singing lesson with Karen Mills. Her mother recalls one of her first performances:
I think it was Grade 11, at her graduation, that she sang 'Ave Maria'. Anne noticed people were crying in the audience. That's when she knew that her voice must be good.
After high school, Anne spent a year at Mount Saint Vincent University, a Catholic women's college in Halifax. Her next stop was the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, where she studied Physical Education. Her passion for music continued. Her university friends talked her into auditioning for Singalong Jubilee, a popular CBC television show. She took along her baritone ukulele to the audition. Although Anne was not offered a job (there were already enough altos in the cast), she did make an impression! Two years and a tonsillectomy later, she got a call from Singalong Jubilee co-host and associate producer, Bill Langstroth. She reluctantly agreed to return for a second audition in 1966, and this time, she got the job! A document on display at the Anne Murray Centre in Springhill, dated May 30, 1966, tells it all: Your signature on four copies of this letter will serve to engage your services for the 1966 Singalong Jubilee series.
