It is Africa's first genuine programme working to ethically re-introduce the offspring of captive-bred African lions back into the wild. Set in over 3000 acres of open savannah grassland, Antelope Park is a unique game reserve and a haven of tranquillity set in the African bush, welcoming guests and volunteer eco-tourists alike to the charming and remarkable camp site. Walk with lions, ride through the wilderness on elephant or horseback, view the abundance of wildlife in the Park or canoe on the scenic lake. During the evening, our exclusive Night Encounters offer a truly amazing, close up experience of lions hunting in their natural environment. An array of accommodation is on offer, from en-suite lodges and river tents, to campsites and beautiful self catering lodges. To further complement the experience, safari style, home cooked meals are available. ALERT and Antelope Park have been the subject of a major UK TV wildlife series LION COUNTRY and the Park has also featured in a number of other wildlife shows including Karina: Wild on Safari. During 2012 a film crew was based at the Park filming a 14 part series called Roaring with Pride which will be aired on Animal Planet in 2013. The series documents the lion release programme in detail, explaining in depth how our organisation is helping to save the future of the African Lion. Your stay at Antelope Park will not only leave you with memories that will last a lifetime, but also with the knowledge that you have personally contributed to the survival of the African Lion. For more information about the ALERT programme, please visit lionalert.org. Our sister company, African Impact, places volunteer Eco-Tourists from around the globe at Antelope Park, who participate in a range of programmes to help support the lions and surrounding communities. It continues to be a priviledge and an honour to be a small part of what God is doing on this amazing continent through our involvement in both group and individual Christian missions travel, and being able to give Christians the opportunity to experience, explore and enjoy God's wonderful creation through unforgettable holidays and safaris. ZIMBABWE: ANTELOPE PARK
We spent just under a week at Antelope Park, located on the edge of Gweru, in Zimbabwe. — before you jump to conclusions on this place, take a moment to read some of our experience and what we took from it.

Antelope Park was an incredible few days. We had the opportunity to interact with some of the local wildlife on their 3000 acre game park, in a way that safaris may not be able to. There are pros and cons to both, neither better than the other. This time around, we chose the park based on our location at that time, and the cost involved for our larger group.
The main draw of the park is the lions. The Park promotes its ‘Rehabilitation and Release into the Wild Programme’ which aims to have the cubs born from captive bred parents, completely separated from human contact, and eventually released as a pack back into the wild. The program has been in place since 1998, and after generation of lions bred in captivity, only now is there a generation that is ready to be released in the near future. During our stay, we were told that BBC will be following these lions and documenting their success in the wild. We witnessed how the multi stage process worked, and got to spend time with the lions that were able to be around humans. For more details on the program, head to antelopepark.co.zw .
During the Lion Walk in our video, you can see that the 13 month old cubs are very relaxed and even posed for photos with us. In case there were thoughts running through your mind that they are not treated well and were forced to do this, it was exactly the opposite. Lions are rather ‘lazy’ animals, so during their walks for exercise, we learned quickly that they tend to lay down all over the place. They may look like cute cubs, but they still have instincts and therefore we had to be very aware of our own actions and the lions as well. We were given sticks for emergencies only — if for some reason a cub thought we looked like a delicious treat, we had something to separate us from the lion at first instance.
There is a lot of talk that what the consumer/tourist sees on the surface, is very different from what is actually happening behind the scenes at these rehabilitation parks. Some are probably worse than others, and some may really be working to do some genuine good for the future of the local species. There are videos that circulate social media that encourages tourist to avoid locations that offer lion walks. We have heard multiple views on Antelope Park — that they are profiting off of tourism, and not focusing on lion rehabilitation. At this point, the answer is still unknown to us as it is seems to be a very debatable topic — our personal experiences were very positive, from the hospitality we received from the staff, to the general well being of the animals we came across.
Before you head to a spot that offers interaction with any local animals, dig around a little so you can feel at ease with your decision, or at least be more aware of what you are walking into. Hopefully you find the animals are treated well and the program is working to save the species, not damage.
