The archaeological excavations of Pompeii have returned the remains of the ancient city of Pompeii , near the hill of Civita, at the gates of modern Pompeii , buried under a blanket of ashes and lapilli during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 , together with Ercolano , Stabia and Oplonti.
The findings following the excavations , initiated by the will of Charles III of Bourbon , are one of the best testimonies of Roman life, as well as the best preserved city of that era; most of the recovered finds (as well as simple objects of daily use including frescoes , mosaics and statues ), are kept in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples and in small quantities in the Antiquarium of Pompeii, currently closed: just the considerable quantity of finds was useful to understand the uses, the customs , theeating habits and the art of life over two millennia ago.
The site of Pompeii, in 2016, exceeded three million visitors, to be precise 3 209 089, resulting in the third most visited state museum site in Italy after the Pantheon and the archaeological circuit of the Colosseum , Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. In 1997 , to preserve the integrity, the ruins of Pompeii managed by the Superintendence, along with those of Herculaneum and Oplontis , have become part of the heritage of humanity list of ' UNESCO
Pompeii was founded by the Osci , with a village in permanent form, around the eighth century BC, on a plateau formed by a lava flow , not far from the river Sarno , although several testimonies attribute the first human settlements already starting from the ninth century BC : during the Oscan period, the village, an important road junction, with roads to Cuma , Nola and Stabiae , was surrounded by walls and reached an area of 63 hectares .
The first excavations in the Pompeian area began in 1748, at the behest of Charles III of Bourbon following the success of the findings of Herculaneum : the polls were carried out by Roque Joaquín de Alcubierre , who believed to be on the trail of ancient Stabiae , brought to light near the hill of Civita several coins and objects of the Roman era , as well as portions of buildings , readily covered after the exploration.
There are relatively few otium villas found in Pompeii: these particular residential buildings, to which a part dedicated to agricultural activities were always added , such as wine cells, presses and presses , were usually built in isolated and panoramic places, far from the inhabited center : Pompeii in fact had a suburb , called Pagus Augustus Felix Suburbanus and attributable to the territories of today's Boscoreale , Boscotrecase and Terzigno , where there were numerous villas of this type, while villas proper of otium rose in the area ofOplontis , another Pompeian suburb, and on the hill of Varano , in Stabiae . However, there are houses of this kind near the city center, just outside or leaning against the ancient city walls
The houses were structured mainly in three types, depending on the social class and the wealth of the owner: the domus belonged to the rich and were very large houses that were usually arranged around an atrium ; they also had an area where domestic life took place, such as kitchens and bedrooms and a representative area, such as the tablinum , triclinium and a peristyle with a central garden , often decorated with fountains and often a spa district.
