The city of Brotherly Love in the late forties, early fifties.
Featuring (wobbly footage) street trolleys, buses, the Reading Lines' Reading Train and Bus Terminal, trains, the port, RR ferry and Delaware River Bridge, a water plane landing on the river, M.S. Keystone State, the Frankford Elevated SUBWAY, PRT elevated train station with Line 14 train, various street scenes, vintage neon lights, cars, water planes moored on the river banks' seaplane ramp. Also featuring the Pennsylvania Rail Road Ferry Terminal on Market Street. During the 19th century, railroads linked the Atlantic with the Pacific coast. Trains from Philadelphia also ran north, south and east to towns and cities on the Atlantic shore. Steamships and ferries connected the city to New Jersey and Delaware. However, it was during the 1880s and 1890s that electrification of trolley cars, elevated and subway trains made rapid public transit possible in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas.
The Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Company.
In 1889, the Reading Railroad decided to build a train depot, passenger station, and company headquarters on the corner of 12th and Market Streets. The move came eight years after the Pennsylvania Railroad opened its Broad Street Station several blocks away at 15th and Market Streets, and one year after the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad opened its 24th Street Station at 24th and Chestnut Streets. The complex was fronted on Market by an eight-story headhouse that housed the passenger station and company headquarters. Reading Terminal served the railroad's inter-city and regional rail trains, many of which are still running as part of the SEPTA Regional Rail system that connects Center City with outlying neighborhoods and suburbs, especially to the north. Many of those trains would be converted to electric power in a project that began in 1928 and basically completed in 1933. Daily traffic peaked during World War II with up to 45,000 daily passengers, then declined in the 1950s with the advance of road and air travel. The Reading declared bankruptcy on November 23, 1971. The shed was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
PRR Railroad Ferry to Camden
Yet because no bridge crossed the width of the Delaware between Philadelphia and Camden until 1926, ferries provided a vital connection for rail passengers bound for New York and points north. Beginning in the 1850s many companies, including the Camden and Atlantic (C&A) Railroad and the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR), acquired ferries to augment their existing lines. In 1854, the C&A purchased the Cooper family’s operations and offered more frequent service between Camden and Philadelphia.
The ferries’ vehicle-carrying business was greatly reduced by the 1926 opening of the Delaware River Bridge, now called the Ben Franklin, but the boats kept steaming across the river. A major impact on ferry facilities and operations was also caused by the two railroads’ combining most of their South Jersey lines in 1933 into the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines. Trains on ex-Reading lines were rerouted to and from the Pennsylvania’s train and ferry terminal, and the Reading’s Kaighn’s Point terminal and ferry were abandoned in 1934. The last of the railroad-owned passenger and vehicle ferries which served our area, the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Philadelphia and Camden Ferry, was in itself a colorful transportation system. The boats on this line were sturdy vessels with steel hulls and upper structures and basically painted in the same Tuscan red color scheme as the passenger train cars of both the Pennsy and the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines. The name “Pennsylvania Railroad” and the boats’ individual names were emblazoned in gold letters on their sides. The names of the vessels were also lettered in gold on gold-bordered black signs on their pilot houses – one facing Camden, the other facing Philadelphia. The Pennsy’s logo, a bright red keystone in a circle with intertwined gold letters, PRR, was flamboyantly displayed on both sides of each boat’s black smokestack. The ferry service was discontinued in 1952 and, by 1957, the terminal had been torn down. PRR passenger ferries were named after Southern New Jersey towns such as Bridgeton, Ventnor and Haddonfield. Time to cross the Delaware river was less than eight minutes.

City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Tactical box struck for a dwelling fire while companies were still in route radio upgraded it to a full box. Battalion 7 went on location with heavy fire throughout a 2 story twin with fire extending to the Bravo and Delta exposure. Battalion 7 (C Platoon) put all companies in service. 3rd and 4th engines to the exposures. Deputy 1 assumed command and requested 2 engines, 2 ladders and a medic above the Box. All searches were negative. No reported injuries.

Mercy Row is a novel set in 1920's and 1930's Philadelphia. It's the story of the rise of a North Philadelphia crime family who was also responsible for building the homes and factories that make up this blue collar area of the city. Despite the violent trials and tribulations caused by rival gangs from South Philadelphia and Chicago Jacob Byrne and Franklin Garrett, with the help of the Irish immigrants that settled the Kensington area, build a formidable Irish mob.
This legal and criminal enterprise kept North Philadelphia free from the Mafia for two generations. Jacob's and Franklin's organization was built on the blood of those who opposed them, the sweat of the laborers who built North Philly and the tears of the wives and mothers whose loved ones were lost in the struggle.
Freight Train Derailments
Featuring a series of Southern Pacific, PRR Pennsylvania Railroad, GT Grand Trunk, BO and Conrail derailments all of which between 1955 and 1980. Footage contains purposely no passenger trains.
The Pennsylvania Railroad (reporting mark PRR) was an American Class I railroad, founded in 1846. Commonly referred to as the Pennsy, the PRR was headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The PRR was the largest railroad by traffic and revenue in the U.S. for the first half of the twentieth century. Over the years, it acquired, merged with or owned part of at least 800 other rail lines and companies. At the end of 1925, it operated 10,515 miles of rail line; in the 1920s, it carried nearly three times the traffic as other railroads of comparable length, such as the Union Pacific or Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroads. Its only formidable rival was the New York Central (NYC), which carried around three-quarters of PRR's ton-miles. At one time, the PRR was the largest publicly traded corporation in the world, with a budget larger than that of the U.S. government and a workforce of about 250,000 people. The corporation still holds the record for the longest continuous dividend history: it paid out annual dividends to shareholders for more than 100 years in a row.
In 1968, PRR merged with rival NYC to form the Penn Central Transportation Company, which filed for bankruptcy within two years.[5] The viable parts were transferred in 1976 to Conrail, which was itself broken up in 1999, with 58 percent of the system going to the Norfolk Southern Railway (NS), including nearly all of the former PRR. Amtrak received the electrified segment east of Harrisburg.
Conrail was incorporated in Pennsylvania on February 10, 1976, and began operations on April 1, 1976. By 1983 Conrail was the fourth largest freight hauler in the United States. In the spring of 1997, Norfolk Southern Corporation (NS) and CSX Corporation (CSX) agreed to acquire Conrail through a joint stock purchase. CSX and NS split most of the Company’s assets between them. The Surface Transportation Board (STB) officially approved the acquisition and restructuring of Conrail on July 23, 1998. NS and CSX took administrative control of Conrail on August 22, 1998. The approved merger plan restructured Conrail into a Switching and Terminal Railroad operating about 1,200 miles of track in three regional areas. On June 1, 1999, Conrail began operating as a Switching and Terminal Railroad for its owners, NS and CSX, in the three geographical areas of Northern New Jersey, Southern New Jersey/Philadelphia, and Detroit, Michigan. In 2007, it expanded its operations from Northern New Jersey to Staten Island, New York.
The Grand Trunk Western Railroad Company (reporting mark GTW) is an important American subsidiary of the Canadian National Railway (reporting mark CN) operating in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. Since a corporate restructuring in 1971 the railroad has been under CN's subsidiary holding company the Grand Trunk Corporation. Grand Trunk Western's routes are part of CN's Midwest Division. Its primary mainline between Chicago, Illinois, and Port Huron, Michigan, serves as a connection between railroad interchanges in Chicago and rail lines in eastern Canada and the Northeastern United States. The railroad's extensive trackage in Detroit and across southern Michigan has made it an essential link for the automotive industry as a hauler of parts and automobiles from manufacturing plants.
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (reporting marks B&O, BO) is one of the oldest railroads in the United States and the first common carrier railroad. It came into being mostly because the city of Baltimore wanted to compete with the newly constructed Erie Canal (which served New York City) and another canal being proposed by Pennsylvania, which would have connected Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. At first this railroad was located entirely in the state of Maryland with an original line from the port of Baltimore west to Sandy Hook. At this point to continue westward, it had to cross into Virginia (now West Virginia) over the Potomac River, adjacent to the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. From there it passed through Virginia from Harpers Ferry to a point just west of the junction of Patterson Creek and the North Branch Potomac River where it crossed back into Maryland to reach Cumberland. From there it was extended to the Ohio River at Wheeling and a few years later also to Parkersburg, West Virginia. It is now part of the CSX Transportation (CSX) network, and includes the oldest operational railroad bridge in the USA.

President Franklin Roosevelt in his acceptance speech addresses the gathered delegates of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia's Convention Hall. Posters of Roosevelt and his running mate John Nance Garner. Roosevelt is surrounded by guards. In the nomination acceptance speech, he speaks of the courage of the American people in withstanding problems and facing challenges. He endorses the platform of the democratic convention. He insists on protection of the family and home, sustenance of democracy, and aid to those overtaken by disaster. He talks of the war in America being waged against want and destitution, as well as a war for the survival of democracy. Crowd cheers and claps to the words of President Roosevelt. These mostly unregulated machines are popping up at convenience stores, bars and other non-casino sites under the guise that they aren’t gambling. The object is to win $$$, however.
