Corfu Town: Church of Panagia Antivouniotissa.
The church of Panagia Antivouniotissa was built probably in the 15th century and is considered the oldest church of the city. The church is dedicated to our Lady Virgin Mary Antivouniotissa (Antivouniotissa = opposite the mountains). It is situated at Mouragia, in the old town of Kerkyra on Arseniou street. In 1979, the owners of the church, namely the families of Alamanos, Mylonopoulos, Rizikakis and Scarpas, donated the whole monumental complex to the Greek state, in order to become a museum, which was inaugurated in 1984. A decade later was completed the restoration of the monument and in 2000 the exhibition of Post-Byzantine portable icons and sacred objects. In their majority the exhibits come from the church of Antivouniotissa, but also from the old Christian Collection of the Museum of Asian Art.
Among the eminent Corfiots buried under flagstones is Capodistria's sister, who was a nun here.
Corfu Town: The Iconostasis of Panagia Antivouniotissa church.
Panagia Antivouniotissa is a typical ionian churc hwith a single aisle, timber roof and exonarthex running around three sides of the building. The church has one of the elaborately decorated ceilings or o u r a n i a ('heaven') that the ionians were so fond of, a stone iconostatis from a later date and very Italianate 17th-century murals on
the Old Testament.
Corfu: Byzantine Art Museum
The Byzantine Museum is housed in the Panagia Antivouniotissa church.
Among the most important exhibits of the museum are:
- Icon of Theotokos Odigitria. The Virgin holds with Her left hand the Christ Child, following the Constantinopolitan iconographic type. Busts of the Archangels Gabriel and Michael are depicted at the top corners. Dated to the end of the 15th century AD.
- Icon of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, and St. Justina. The figures are depicted in full length, treading on a three-headed dragon. This icon was painted by Michael Damaskenos to commemorate the victory of the European forces against the Turks, in the naval battle of Nafpaktos in 1571.
- Icon of St. Demetrios who is represented riding a horse, in front of the city of Thessaloniki. Dated to the end of the 16th or the beginning of the 17th century.
- Icon of St. Cyril of Alexandreia. The Saint is depicted in full length, facing the spectator and dressed in richly decorated garments. It was painted by Emmanuel Tzanes, in 1654.
- Noli me tangere (touch me not). Christ appears before Mary Magdalen, after His Resurrrection. The icon is signed by Emmanuel Tzanes and is dated to 1657.
TRAVEL VIDEO CORFU ISLAND OLD TOWN
Corfu town, especially for its oldest part, is one of the most charming and romantic places of all the Greece.Corfu
It is a perfect example of ancient Venetian and Byzantine art that will be able to fascinate you with its little streets and its panoramic points.
Surrounded by the sea, the old town of Kerkyra is closed between the two ancient fortresses.
When you arrive by ferry boat, the humidity of the sea hide Corfu town revealing only at the last moment the old houses.
The old Corfu town, built in the past between the two fortresses, has been developed with high buildings as consequence of the increasing number of the population.
All these houses, one next to the other, have been built of local stones, with wooden attics and handmade tiles.
Fortunately the number of buildings damaged by the Second World War is not so big, and today the charm of the old town of Corfu is preserved and can still remind us the past.
During its history, Corfu island attracted attention of many conquerors for its strategic position into the Mediterranean sea.
Also today it's possible to recognize their transit from many historical sites and buildings of Corfu town.
More than a single house, you will appreciate them all together, especially during and after the sunset.Corfu
It will be an unforgettable experience to spend hours and hours just walking up and down along thousands of small paved streets, looking around to discover the old town secrets and buying some presents to bring back home.
You’ll visit Kerkyra walking between high old houses, you will buy traditional products in ancient cellars, surrounded by stone staircase, old Venetian walls and hidden gardens.
Every single building, every single street will appear like an open museum, but the joie de vivre of the local people will remember you that the old town is also full of life and full of surprises.
The paved streets and the ancient buildings will bring you to the large beautiful Esplanade and the romantic gallery of Liston; a place that you can’t miss to visit.
Corfu
The Esplanade of the old Corfu town is a large green area between the town and the old fortress.
Its name comes from the complete absence of buildings that was important during the past to defend the town from foreign enemies.Corfu
Today a large part of Corfu’s Esplanade is changed into a beautiful public park full of trees and garden seats, while a small part of the Esplanade still hosts the old English cricket field.
Along the west side of the Esplanade there’s also a marvelous building that reminds us the old French occupation: the Liston.
The Liston of Kerkyra was built by the French engineer Lesseps who was inspired by the Rue Rivoli in Paris.
The Liston with its nice gallery full of coffee shops and restaurants is today the heart of the social life in Corfu.
Due to the ancient English domination, near the Esplanade, on the north side, there’s also the Royal Palace of Corfu, called also St. Michele and St. Giorgio palace.
Built in 1820 under G.Whithmore Army General is the only Georgian art example in all the Mediterranean area.
Used in the past firstly by English and then by the Greek Royal Family, today it hosts the Museum of Asiatic Arts, the Historical Archive and the Classic Relics Authority of Corfu.Corfu
If you will be here at dusk, we would like to suggest you an amazing walk that starts from the St. Giorgios Arch, next to the Corfu Royal Palace.
As you will pass the great arch, you have just to follow the road that runs alongside the sea which will take you down to the entrance of the old town of Corfu.
This road follows the ancient walls of Kerkyra, a marvelous sunset will be in front of you and you will pass near historical buildings such as the church of Panaghia “Antivouniotissa”, the Byzanthine museum, the old port and the ancient arch of St. Nicholas.

ГРЕЦИЯ. МУЗЕЙ АЗИАТСКОГО ИСКУССТВА КОРФУ. Museum of Asian art of Corfu. #9

Corfu Town: Panagia Tenedou (2)
Accordingly to various documents that have been discovered, the church began to be built in 1663 and was completed with in 1749. It is an important , architecturally, church with a dome, double lateral chapels and a bell tower. The dome roofed church of Virgin Mary of Tenedos belongs to the basilica eptanesian one-aisle type which presents particular historical interest as it accommodated in 1798 the first printing-house of Greece, and in 1800, the island's first public library. Moreover in 1805, the first Greek faculty of public education with director Ioannis Kapodistrias was founded and placed in the temple.
An exterior element, which impresses but also, characterizes the particular church, is the Venetian sculptured lion in the central entrance and the inscription Sub Ubra Alarum Tuatum Protege nos MDCCXII. On either side there is the emblem of the Donas family (right) and the emblem of the Franciscan Monks (left).
In the interior of the temple there is a stone chancel screen, which was made in 1603. It was transported from the other temple of Virgin Mary that is found in the Old Fortress. Other than the icon of Virgin Mary of Tenedos or Carmelo, there are other icons in the temple such as of Saint Nikolaos, Saint Andreas, Hyperagia Theotokos (Virgin Mary) and of Saint Fragiskos and Saint Spyridonas.
Corfu Town: Spiliotissa Parish Church
On Mitropolis Square, near the Old Port, is 16th Century church that contains the remains of Saint Theodora, 9th Century Byzantine Empress. It is named also Mitropolis after the public square in which it is. The Spiliotissa name derives from spilia that means cave and it is the name of this area so called for the presence of a cave at the feet of the New Fortress. It was built in 1577 in Corfu Town, and possesses some impressive ecclesiastical art.
Inside the church there are Byzantine icons like the Madonna Dimosiana, painted on both sides, and others of the Ionic School made by Damaskino, Tzane and Paramithioti.

Corfu - For Your Eyes Only
This video shows the highlights of our trip to the island of Corfu, Greece in December 2018. We decided to see the Achilleion palace, built for Empress Elisabeth of Austria, aka Sisi in 1890. It is a very picturesque location with two larger statues of Achilles and multiple frescoes. It is also the location of the casino scene from the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only.
We also walked around the city of Kerkira and visited Byzantine Museum of Antivouniotissa. Time was limited so we only spent a half day in the area then retreated to the ship.
If you would like to see more of Corfu, please click Jess & Jakii's video linked to the end.

Metropolitan Church of Corfu (Corfu Town, Greece)
Holy Metropolitan Church of Iperagia Theotokos Spileotissis
The Metropolitan Church of Kerkyra (Corfu), known as Panagia (Virgin Mary) Spileotissa, is situated near to the New Fortress and the port, where the old church of Saint Vlasios stood. The church built in 1577 is a three-aisled Basilica with influences of the Renaissance Period. It is dedicated to three saints, Panagia Spileotissa (since after the destruction of the church the icon of Panagia Spileotissa was brought here), to St. Vlasios and to St. Theodora, the Empress of Byzantium. In the interior there are great hagiographies, a Byzantine templon and a silver shrink whith the Holy Relics of Saint Theodora. The most important icons are: Panagia of Dimosiana (made in the town of Ioannina in the 14th century), The Crucifixion (15th century), Agios Georgios (16th century), Agios Govdelas (17th century) and the Last Supper (18th century). The Holy relic of Saint Theodora was transferred here from the Constantinople together with the holy body of Saint Spyridon (his relic is in the Saint Spyridon Church). The procession of the Holy relic of Saint Theodora takes place on the first Sunday of the Lent of the Orthodox religion, every year. Saint Theodora was empress and wife of the emperor of the Byzantium, Theofilos. She lived during the difficult years of iconoclasm (iconoclasty = rejection icons). Her husband, Theofilos, was one of the iconoclasts and opposed to Saint Theodora’s faith regarding the icons of the Orthodox Church. After her husband's death, Saint Theodora governed the country wisely for 15 years, since their son, Michael, was still a minor. Holy Empress Theodora convened in 843 a synod, the Iconoclasts were anathematized and the worship of icons was recognized by the Church.

Paleokastritsa Monastery (4)
The name of the Monastery Paleokastritsa is derived from a local phrase Paleokastritissa. This phrase was applied to the temple of Virgin Mary in the 15th century when a historic document, written on the 7th of August 1497, was recovered that referenced the temple as a Paleokastro. The word translates into old castle indicating the existence of a previous fortress constructed on the grounds pre-dating the present structures.
Visitors will see the monks in their black gowns going about their daily business.

SUMMARY
=======
Corfu (, also US: ) or Kerkyra (Greek: Κέρκυρα, romanized: Kérkyra, pronounced [ˈcercira] (listen); Ancient Greek: Κόρκυρα, romanized: Kórkyra, pronounced [kórkyra]; Medieval Greek: Κορυφώ, romanized: Koryfó; Latin: Corcyra) is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. It is the second largest of the Ionian Islands, and, including its small satellite islands, forms the margin of the northwestern frontier of Greece. The island is part of the Corfu regional unit, and is administered as a single municipality, which also includes the smaller islands of Ereikoussa, Mathraki and Othonoi. The municipality has an area of 610,9 km2, the island proper 592,8 km2. The principal city of the island and seat of the municipality (pop. 32,095) is also named Corfu. Corfu is home to the Ionian University.
The island is bound up with the history of Greece from the beginnings of Greek mythology. Its history is full of battles and conquests. Ancient Korkyra took part in the Battle of Sybota which was a catalyst for the Peloponnesian War, and, according to Thucydides, the largest naval battle between Greek city states until that time. Thucydides also reports that Korkyra was one of the three great naval powers of fifth century BC Greece, along with Athens and Corinth. Archaeological Museum of Ioannina
It is located in a prominent position on the hill called Litharitsia, in the center of the city of Ioannina.
The collections of the Archaeological Museum are displayed in seven halls, the central aisle and three atria, covering a total area of 1,200 square meters. Exhibits cover a wide time span, from the first appearance of humans in Epirus during the Lower Palaeolithic, 250,000 years ago, to late antiquity in late Roman times (3rd century AD).
It is structured around three different axes: chronological, geographical and thematic. These interwined axes underpin the museum's narrative in an attempt to highlight the area's distinct character and history during antiquity.

Corfu Town: St. Sofia and St. Josef church (1)
