Antwerp (Dutch: Antwerpen) is the second largest city in Belgium (after Brussels). Antwerp was a financial and trade center in the 16th century and has some beautiful historical buildings.
We start this evening walk at the Grote Markt - Antwerp's Market Square with the Brabo Fountain and the Town Hall. There in the centre the Flemish Renaissance architecture can be seen in many places. We walk around in the Old Town with the gothic Cathedral of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal).
Later we check out the Groenplaats before we walk towards the railway station were we end this walk.

Antwerpen is a city in Belgium, and is the capital of Antwerp province in Flanders. With a population of 520,504, it is the most populous city proper in Belgium, and with a metropolitan area housing around 1,200,000 people, it's the second largest metropolitan region after Brussels in Belgium.
Antwerp is on the River Scheldt, linked to the North Sea by the river's Westerschelde estuary. It is about 40 kilometres (25 mi) north of Brussels, and about 15 kilometres (9 mi) south of the Dutch border. The Port of Antwerp is one of the biggest in the world, ranking second in Europe and within the top 20 globally. The city is also known for its diamond industry and trade.
Both economically and culturally, Antwerp is and has long been an important city in the Low Countries, especially before and during the Spanish Fury (1576) and throughout and after the subsequent Dutch Revolt. Antwerp was also the place of the world's oldest stock exchange building, originally built in 1531 and re-built in 1872.
The inhabitants of Antwerp are nicknamed Sinjoren (Dutch pronunciation: [sɪɲˈjoːrə(n)]), after the Spanish honorific señor or French seigneur, lord, referring to the Spanish noblemen who ruled the city in the 17th century. The city hosted the 1920 Summer Olympics.

`A Trip to Antwerpen` is a short movie which I made by myself after travelling to Antwerpen (Belgium). The film offers my view at this truly beautiful city. Shot from the travellers point of view, my film enables viewers to develop their knowledge of existing Antwerpen's landmarks, as well as allowing them to experience unique cultural aspects of the city that are less well known.

Antwerp is a city and municipality in Belgium and the capital of the Antwerp province of Belgium. Antwerp's population is 510,610 (as of 1 January 2014), making it the second most populous city in Belgium, after the capital Brussels. Port House Headquarters by Zaha Hadid in Antwerp, Belgium - 2016
A former fire brigade building is set to be transformed with a new beam structure in Belgium this year. The 150ft-high Port House Headquarters in Antwerp will offer incredible views over the harbour through its glass windows, some of which are transparent. Others are reflective, as a nod to Antwerp's diamond trade, according to Zaha Hadid Architects.

Antwerp: The World's Diamond Capital
For over 5 centuries, Antwerp is the heart of the global diamond trade and the diamond capital of the world until today. The diamond trade in the port started nearly 500 years ago when the first rough stones were brought over from India. Gradually, local diamond traders rose to prominence with their attention to detail and exuberant selection until even the King of France, François I, started ordering his diamonds from the master cutters in Antwerp rather than in Paris.
Today, around eighty percent of all rough diamonds pass through Antwerp on their way towards becoming earrings or other pieces of jewellery. Daily, 220 million dollar worth of diamonds are traded, adding up to an amazing 48 billion dollars annually. On a surface of less than 1 square mile, more than 1700 diamond traders are active. No other city in the world houses four diamond exchanges, controls 84% of the world’s trade in rough diamonds en 50% of the trade in cut diamonds. Every diamond in the world passes at least once in Antwerp!
Established in 1973, the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) is one of the world’s most renowned private companies that officially represents and coordinates the Antwerp diamond sector. Located in heart of Antwerp in the Hoveniersstraat, it directs the import and export of diamonds in and out of Antwerp. Antwerp is home to all major diamond mining companies, which sources diamonds for thousands of diamond dealers across the globe.
Since the approval of the Kimberley Process, Antwerp fulfils the role as the global moral leader in transparency and compliance. In collaboration with competent government agencies, all diamond import and export is physically controlled by the Diamond Office, which serves as an example to many other diamond centres in the world.

Het Steen is a medieval fortress in the old city centre of Antwerp, Belgium, one of Europe's biggest ports. Built after the Viking incursions in the early Middle Ages as the first stone fortress of Antwerp, Het Steen is Antwerp's oldest building and used to be its oldest urban centre.
Previously known as Antwerpen Burcht (fortress), Het Steen gained its current name in around 1520, after significant rebuilding under Charles V. The rebuilding led to its being known first as 's Heeren Steen (the King's stone castle), and later simply as Het Steen (the stone castle). The Dutch word steen means stone, and is used for fortress or palace, as in the Gravensteen in Ghent, Belgium.
The fortress made it possible to control the access to the Scheldt, the river on whose bank it stands. It was used as a prison between 1303 and 1827. The largest part of the fortress, including dozens of historic houses and the oldest church of the city, was demolished in the 19th century when the quays were straightened to stop the silting up of the Scheldt. The remaining building, heavily changed, contains a shipping museum, with some old canal barges displayed on the quay outside.
In 1890 Het Steen became the museum of archeology and in 1952 an annex was added to house the museum of Antwerp maritime history, which in 2011 moved to the nearby Museum Aan de Stroom. Here you’ll also find a war memorial to the Canadian soldiers in World War II.

There are some beautiful plaques on the back side of the Steen Castle at Antwerp. Canadian visitors will especially want to see the plaques thanking the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry for their part in the liberation of Antwerp, in 1944.
At the entrance to Het Steen is a bas-relief of Semini, above the archway, around 2nd century. Semini is the Scandinavian God of youth and fertility (with symbolic phallus). A historical plaque near Het Steen explains that women of the town appealed to Semini when they desired children; the god was reviled by later religious clergy. Inhabitants of Antwerp previously referred to themselves as children of Semini. An organization concerned with the historic preservation of Het Steen and Semini, Antwerp Komitee Semini in Ere (AKSIE), formed in 1986, holds annual celebrations at Het Steen as cultural events.
At the entrance bridge to the castle is a statue of a giant and two humans. It depicts the giant Lange Wapper who used to terrorise the inhabitants of the city in medieval times.
