Antwerp is situated on the Schelde (Scheldt) River, about 55 miles (88 km) from the North Sea. The Schelde, together with the Meuse and the Rhine, forms the biggest estuary in western Europe, and Antwerp is an essential part of an enormous harbour complex, one of the greatest in the world. The harbour installations of Antwerp grew especially after World War II. For many years this expansion took place on the right bank of the Schelde only, but beginning in the 1970s there was much development on the left bank as well.
Because Antwerp lies in the Dutch- (Flemish-) speaking part of Belgium, the city plays the role of unofficial capital of Flanders. Antwerpians generally take this role very seriously, conscious as they are of the great importance of their city in the past and present.

Walking in Antwerp! The Diamond Capital of the World!
Antwerp (Dutch: Antwerpen) is a major destination in Belgium in the region of Flanders. It is renowned for being the world's leading diamond city and more than 70% of all diamonds are traded there. The Diamond Market is the hub of the economic section in Belgium. More than 85% of the world’s rough diamonds, 50% of cut diamonds, and 40% of industrial diamonds are traded in the city.
Antwerp is the second largest city of Belgium. It has a beautiful historic city center, and is world-renowned for its fashion industry. The port of Antwerp is the second largest in Europe, and a major economic player in Belgium.
According to folklore, notably celebrated by a statue in front of the town hall, the city got its name from a legend about a giant called Antigoon who lived near the Scheldt river. He exacted a toll from passing boatmen, and for those who refused, he severed one of their hands and threw it into the river. Eventually, the giant was killed by a young hero named Silvius Brabo, who cut off the giant's own hand and flung it into the river. Hence the name Antwerpen, from Dutch hand werpen, akin to Old English hand and wearpan (to throw), which has evolved to today's warp.

6. Various of fence at Brussels Airport through which thieves allegedly entered
STORYLINE:
On February 18th 2013 eight masked gunmen forced their way through the security fence at Brussels' international airport, drove onto the tarmac and snatched some 50 (m) million US dollars worth of diamonds from the hold of a Swiss-bound plane without firing a shot.
The gang responsible for one of the biggest diamond heists in recent years used two black vehicles with a flashing blue police lights in their daring raid late on February 18th, said Anja Bijnens, spokeswoman for the Brussels prosecutor's office.
Police said they found a burnt-out minivan believed to be involved in the robbery near the airport later on February 18th.
The heist was estimated at some 50 (m) million US dollars in diamonds, said Caroline De Wolf from Antwerp's World Diamond Centre.
We are mainly concerned of the way that it was able to be possible that this happened. I mean, the fact that you normally think that an airport and certainly an international airport is a very secure environment, which is exactly what you need when you are trading diamonds and you transport diamonds, she added.
The robbers forced their way through a perimeter fence, at a place where two work sites obstructed a clear view, Bijnens said.
There were no details about how the hole was opened but airport authorities said it must have taken more than simply blasting through it with a vehicle.
The robbers drove up to the Swiss passenger plane some 20 minutes before departure time, brandishing their machine guns. Then they methodically broke into the hold, which was accessed from outside, to choose their loot.
The robbers finished their clinical operation with a high-speed departure through the same hole in the fence, completing the spectacular theft within barely five minutes, Bijnens said.
The Swiss flight, bound for Zurich and operated by Helvetic Airways, was cancelled.
A decade ago the port city of Antwerp, the world capital of diamond-cutting, was the scene of what was probably one of the biggest diamond heists in history.
Robbers then took precious stones, jewels, gold and securities from the high-security vaults at Antwerp's Diamond Centre, yielding loot that police in 2003 estimated to be worth about 100 (m) million at the time.
February 18th's heist though was a fresh blow to the Antwerp industrial diamond centre which prides itself on security and discretion.
Antwerp's Diamond Centre stands in the heart of the high-surveillance diamond district where police and hundreds of cameras work around the clock, and security has been beefed up further since the spectacular 2003 robbery.
Shipments to the airport leave aboard armoured trucks on an almost daily basis.
The shipment was not extraordinary, since on any given day, some 200 (m) million US dollars in polished and rough stones go through the Antwerp diamond centre.
February 18th's parcels contained rough and polished stones heading for Switzerland, where many of the 120 parcels were intended for different handlers.

Antwerp - Antwerpen- French: Anvers is a city in Belgium, the capital of Antwerp province in the region of Flanders. With a population of 510,610, it is the most populous city proper in Belgium. Its metropolitan area houses around 1,200,000 people, which is second behind Brussels.
Antwerp is on the River Scheldt, linked to the North Sea by the Westerschelde estuary. The Port of Antwerp is one of the biggest in the world, ranking second in Europen better source needed] and within the top 20 globally.
Antwerp has long been an important city in the Low Countries, both economically and culturally, especially before the Spanish Fury (1576) in the Dutch Revolt. The inhabitants of Antwerp are nicknamed Sinjoren, after the Spanish honorific señor or French seigneur, lord, referring to the Spanish noblemen who ruled the city in the 17th century. The city hosted the 1920 Summer Olympics.
Although not as populous as nearby Brussels, Belgium’s beautiful second city is arguably the country’s cultural hub – and still large enough to offer all the excitement of a big metropolis.
Antwerp has long been a source of Flemish pride, home to one of the world’s largest ports dating back to the middle ages. Today you can trace the city’s history through gorgeous Gothic and Renaissance architecture, fantastic museums and bars serving some of Europe’s most storied beers.
It has carved out a place as one of the world’s fashion capitals, thanks in no small part to the famously avant-garde designers known as the Antwerp Six. Creatives continue to gravitate here, bringing with them a superb café scene, design boutiques, art spaces, frequent pop-up events and absolutely wild nightlife, especially in the south of the city.

Antwerp is the second largest city of Belgium. It has a beautiful historic city center, and is world-renowned for its fashion industry. The port of Antwerp is the second largest in Europe, and a major economic player in Belgium.
The name Antwerp is most likely derived from aan de werpe, which is Dutch for at the throw, referring to a place where the bending river throws its sand. Locals might tell you of an ancient urban legend, saying it comes from Hand werpen, which translated is throwing (a) hand(s). In the official flag, the castle het Steen and the hand of Antwerp are shown.
In the 16th century, Antwerp was one of the most important financial centres of the world, where traders from all over Europe and Asia sold and bought their goods. After the siege of Antwerp in 1585 by the Spanish, this role as a financial centre was taken over by Amsterdam. Nevertheless, since the 19th century and especially the 20th century, Antwerp has made a serious economic comeback.
The public transportation company De Lijn operates a dense network of buses, trams, and pre-metro (underground tram) connections in the city and its surroundings. Most things to see are near or within the Boulevards, the half-moon of avenues where there were once 16th century city-walls. This old town center, with a diameter of about 1.5 km can be walked, but there is excellent public transport.
The municipality comprises the city of Antwerp proper and several towns. It is divided into nine entities (districts):
Antwerp
Berchem
Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo
Borgerhout
Deurne
Ekeren
Hoboken
Merksem
Wilrijk
Antwerp is the focus of lines to the north to Essen and the Netherlands, east to Turnhout, south to Mechelen, Brussels and Charleroi, and southwest to Ghent and Ostend. It is served by international trains to Amsterdam and Paris, and national trains to Ghent, Bruges, Ostend, Brussels, Charleroi, Hasselt, Liège, Leuven and Turnhout. A small airport, Antwerp International Airport, is located in the district of Deurne, with passenger service to various European destinations. A bus service connects the airport to the city centre.

Antwerp is famous for its local products. In August every year the Bollekesfeest takes place. The Bollekesfeest is a showcase for such local products as Bolleke, an amber beer from the De Koninck Brewery. The Mokatine sweets made by Confiserie Roodthooft, Elixir D'Anvers, a locally made liquor, locally roasted coffee from Koffie Verheyen, sugar from Candico, Poolster pickled herring and Equinox horse meat, are other examples of local specialities. One of the most known products of the city are its biscuits, the Antwerpse Handjes, literally Antwerp Hands. Usually made from a short pastry with almonds or milk chocolate, they symbolize the Antwerp trademark and folklore. The local products are represented by a non-profit organization, Streekproducten Provincie Antwerpen vzw.
