Restored or ruined? Botched Buddha restoration sparks outcry in China

The botched restoration of a 1000-year-old Buddha statue in southwest China has prompted a storm of protest after photos of the “cartoonish” paintwork came to light. The restoration work on stone statue located in Anyue County, southwest China's Sichuan Province was proposed and carried out in 1995 by local villagers, but the authorities have to offer an explanation after the photos went viral on Chinese social media. After the incident, the Administration of Cultural Heritage has improved the management and protection of other relics.
