Anzob Tunnel :
The Anzob Tunnel, Istiqlol tunnel or Ushtur Tunnel is a 5,040 m long tunnel located 80 km northwest of Tajikistan's capital Dushanbe. The tunnel is part of the M34 highway and connects the Tajik capital to the country's second largest city, Khujand. The tunnel was open in 2006 despite being only partially finished and it quickly gained the a reputation as being one of the world's most dangerous tunnels. In 2014 Iran's government signed an agreement to finish the tunnel and the tunnel was reopened in late 2015. The tunnel saves drivers at least 4 hours when traveling between Dushanbe and Khujand and allows travelers to avoid having to pass through Uzbekistan.
Its construction put an end to Uzbekistan's ability to halt traffic between Tajikistan's two largest cities (the two countries have suffered from long-term diplomatic disputes). It marked the beginning of other major co-operative projects such as the Sangtuda-2 power plant.
The tunnel is also said to be part of a planned road which would run from Iran through Herat in western Afghanistan and Mazar-i-Sharif and Sherkhan Bandar in northern Afghanistan to Tajikistan and from there up to China. The route has been named the new Silk Road. The tunnel was officially opened in March 2006; it was built by the Iranian Sabir Co. Due to the significance of the tunnel, limited traffic flow was permitted via signing a waiver form noting potential hazards such as flooding and smog from construction equipment operating inside the tunnel prior to the final construction phase which may have included installation of ventilation and drainage infrastructure.
As of May 2014, the tunnel was still unfinished and the Iranian government and Tajik government had signed an agreement to complete the project by late March 2015 The tunnel was closed in June 2015 for repair work and reopened for traffic in September 2015 after leakage problems and concreting the base and lighting the tunnel was completed.. It was officially inaugurated in August 2017.
It is also a transit route between Dushanbe and Uzbekistan's capital Tashkent. Prior to construction of the tunnel, especially during winter, the threat of year-round avalanches led to periodic disruptions of commerce.

Anzob Tunnel, Tajikistan. Tunnel of Death
Okay, perhaps Tunnel of Death is extreme, but it got your attention, right?
The Anzob Tunnel lies north of Dushanbe, Tajikistan. It serves as the main connection between the north and the rest of the country. The road surface is not paved in many places, lighting is poor, and it's leaking water from the top and bottom. The haziness near the end of the tunnel is due to exhaust buildup. There is no ventilation at all.
The video starts about 2 minutes into the tunnel, when we realized something wasn't quite right. There is a 5 second cut about 10 minutes in when I accidentally pressed the stop button.

The Anzob Tunnel, or The Tunnel of Death, as it is locally known, is a five km long tunnel located 80 km northwest of Tajikistan's capital Dushanbe.
The tunnel connects the Tajik capital to the country's second largest city, Khujand, travel to which, prior to the tunnel's construction, required travelers to cross the border into Uzbekistan in order to travel between the two cities. It is also a transit route between Dushanbe and Uzbekistan's capital Tashkent. Prior to construction of the tunnel, especially during winter, the threat of year-round avalanches led to periodic disruptions of commerce.
The road connecting Dushanbe, Tajikistan's capital, with the northern Fergana valley and the country's second city, Khujand, is closed much of the year due to snow in the Anzob Pass. During that time, the route is only accessible by air, which is too expensive for most Tajiks, and thus inhibits trade.
In Soviet times, the main road connecting the cities wound through what is now Uzbekistan. Deteriorating relations between the neighbors has made this passage all but impossible in recent years. Thus, Tajikistan is split in two for several months every winter.
But an Iranian-funded project has promised to change that. Resurrecting Soviet plans dating from the 1970s, Iran has invested US $31 million in a tunnel that bypasses the Anzob pass, ensuring the North-South road can stay open all year. Construction of the project started in 2003. Contracted to Sobir International, an Iranian firm, the project is expected to cost $110 million.
Where the remainder of the construction funds comes from is anyone's guess. From a look at the tunnel, it appears to have been built on the cheap.
The Iranians' involvement is not solely a gesture of magnanimity to their Tajik ethno-linguistic kin. It is also connected with the geopolitical contest for influence now playing out in Central Asia. The maneuvering manifests itself in the construction of roads, bridges, power cables, and, most of all, pipelines. China, Iran, Russia, the United States and others are all vying for influence in the volatile region with strategic transportation routes and energy reserves.

The plan of tunnels ( Anzob tunnels ) was taken by the Anzob passage (on the way to Dushanbe - Khujand ) during the Soviet era. In 1982 - 1991, only 317 meter tunnels were cut.
Anzob road (on the Dushanbe - Khujand highway ) is located 80 km far from Dushanbe at the altitude of 3372 meters high heights of Hissar. The winter problem was not allowed (5-6 months Anzob passed by) the passengers went through this route. The length of the tunnel - 5040 m
Construction of tunnel (Anzob tunnel) Istiqlol started in 1998 with financial assistance of Iran.
The length of tunnel (Anzob tunnel) Istiklol is 5040 meters.

The Anzob tunnel
The Anzob tunnel, or tunnel of death in northern Tajikistan.
Even in good weather conditions the tunnel is flooded, turning the giant pot holes in the unfinished road into invisible death traps. Unmarked drainage channels waiting to swamp your bike. The tunnel lacks proper lighting and ventilation, breathing is hard and painful due to the thick mixture of exhaust gases.
