All about Aomori - Must see spots in Aomori | Japan Travel Guide
Area Characteristics
Aomori Prefecture which is at the northern tip of the main island of Honshu is surrounded on three sides by ocean and once you cross Tsugaru Strait, you will come to Hokkaido up north. It is one of Japan’s areas of heavy snowfall and even in the summer, it is rare for temperatures to go beyond 30 degrees Celsius. Beginning with the virgin forest expanse of Shirakami-Sanchi which has been recognized as a World Heritage site, the prefecture has many examples of nature including Lake Towada, the Hakkoda Mountains and the Shimokita Peninsula. The Seikan Tunnel which links Honshu with Hokkaido is the world’s 2nd longest tunnel next to Europe’s Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland.
Major Sites
Hirosaki Castle is one of the symbolic spots in Aomori. Between late April and early May, many visitors come and appreciate the cherry blossoms at the Hirosaki Sakura Festival held at Hirosaki Park. If you want to fully savor Mother Nature, then places such as Shirakami-Sanchi, Oirase Stream, Lake Towada and the Hakkoda Mountains are popular. The Aomori Nebuta Festival is held in August but the Nebuta Warasse Museum which is dedicated to nebuta floats is open all year round. There are also plenty of other sightseeing sites including Mt. Osore which is known as one of Japan’s 3 Great Sacred Grounds alongside Mt. Hiei and Mt. Koya, Furofushi Onsen which has an attractive open-air bath alongside the coast, the Sannai-Maruyama site which is the largest archaeological site from the Jomon Era, and the Aomori Museum of Art.
Food
One famous product in Aomori is its apples which boast the largest shipping rate in Japan. For regional cuisine, there is senbei jiru (rice cracker soup), hittsumi soup, and jappa jiru which is a fish dish. There are also other popular dishes such as kaiyaki miso which goes well with rice, maguro don, Towada barayaki which is known to be the soul food of Towada, and a clear soup with sea urchin and abalone known as ichigo ni.
Transportation
It’s common to head for Aomori Prefecture from Tokyo by Shinkansen (Bullet Train), so a ride on the Tohoku Shinkansen will take a minimum of 3 hours to reach Aomori Station. Driving through the prefecture by rental car is convenient.
Accommodations
There are accommodations available near Aomori Station which is a handy base for sightseeing, Hirosaki located near Shirakami-Sanchi, the Lake Towada vicinity, Hachinohe and other areas.

Japan Trip 2019: Aomori (4K 60FPS)
Chapter 6: The Port Town of Aomori
Aomori is a small port town in the Tohoku region. It is close to the sea, so this makes it a very good place to go shop for fresh fish and other goodies! The city is also known for its big apples called fuji. They create all kinds of products and derivatives from it like ciders and more.
First thing we do in the morning is go eat some fish at Furakawa Fish Market! It contains lots of packed rows of vendors selling local seafood freshly brought in from Aomori Port. Buy tickets to create your own donburi bowl (bowl with rice) with fish of your choice picked freshly from the market! The Augashinsen Fish Market is also next to Furukawa's. I go buy and eat a nice rice cake filled with red bean paste, mmmm!
After that we go to the Hakkodamaru Memorial Ship. It was a ship that connected Aomori with Hakodate, and transported many things like the famous apples. It is now retired because of the new railway system that got introduced later in Japan. The museum inside explains the lives of the people at the time while inside and outside of the ship. We get a nice view of the city from the deck of the ship! There is also a vehicle deck which holds several historical trains of the time.
Nebutta Warasse is a museum about the Nebuta Matsuri, which is a festival held on summer around the beginning of August. Obviously, being in September I could not attend the actual festival, but visiting this museam gives us a good idea of what it is! The floats were amazing and I got to assist a little show while I was there! It recreated the atmosphere of the festival that's for sure!
Sannai Maruyama Archeological Site is the largest and one of the most complete and best preserved Jomon Period (13000-300 BC) villages in Japan. It was very interesting to see the old buildings and learn more about this time period of Japan.
Finally, to end the day we went to the Aomori Museum of Arts. Great art pieces of Chagall's Aleko were displayed in the Aleko Hall. No videos could be taken and photos are just for personal use. I could get shots of the Aomori-Ken statue though, which is a giant dog statue by artist Nara.
Overall, this was a nice city to visit! Next stop: Hakodate. We're entering Hokkaido for real now!

Aomori's Nebuta Matsuri Experience | Japanese Summer Festival ★ ONLY in JAPAN
The Nebuta Matsuri is considered by many as Japan's top festival and I traveled 600 km north to the northern most city of Honshu to participate in the fun!
What makes Nebuta so amazing?
★ It could be the illuminated Nebuta floats that are pulled down on the city streets, turning and bowing to the crowd.
They're often in the form of mythological Japanese gods or dieties, larger than life in size.
★ Perhaps it's the taiko drums and flute players that make this festival no 1. The beat with those mystical flutes stays in your mind and body days after the festival has ended.
★ It could be the haneto dancers dressed in special yukata dancing and screaming Rasera! Rasera!
The answer is that they all when put together make this festival a must-see when you visit Japan in the summer.
In this episode we look at:
AOMORI CITY ATTRACTIONS
NEBUTA HISTORY AND MUSEUM
HOW TO PARTICIPATE IN NEBUTA
HOW THE FLOATS ARE MADE
THE MUSIC
HANETO DANCERS
Special thanks to MARUHA NICHIRO NEBUTA ASSOCIATION and Nebuta Design Master Shigeki Tezuka and his wonderful Nebuta float called Records of the Three Kingdoms: Zhong Fei Roars at the Bridge of Changban

The reason I find this just riding the train station wihaeseoda memories. The theme of winter trains stove. Inde coach duffle two cars behind the locomotive, one coach and one is a regular train fireplace. No matter how old train ragon but that proposal has not been well understood it very curious that there is a stove in the train. There is a very old stove. It two. The winter season runs twice a day for 60 years as part of marketing to attract the increasingly shrinking stove train of railway passengers over history. Now rare table also check and also move stalls selling snacks. Holding a potato salesman saying something. It does the advertising than potato chips made from potatoes that. Jwin mind the cookies are returned to the concentric, the stove goes to ripen In the memories. It was such a stove jeoken our school days. Naneyo old thinking young funny thing, too. Diligently grilling squid, fragrant smell spreads in the car. Anything train of memories and laughter to spare a moment that modern people being forced to 'Hurry'.

Aomori Nebuta Matsuri | Japanese Summer Festival
The Nebuta Matsuri is a breathtaking and unique festival celebrated in the northern prefecture of Aomori. Held once a year, it features gorgeous, vivid floats shaped after famous historical and mythological Japanese characters. Often hailed as the most colorful festival in Japan, the Nebuta Matsuri should not be missed.

I will share a little secret with you, yes the Goshagaware Tachineputa is much smaller and less famous than the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri, but you know what, this festival and its museum is by far the best lantern floats festival of the region and much more interesting than the Aomori Nebuta!!!
Taking place in Goshogarawa between august 4th and 8th, the Goshagaware Tachineputa features some massive 23m tall and 19 ton parade floats that roam around the tiny little streets of Goshogawara with dancers all cheering and shouting “Yattemare! Yattemare!”.
The story goes apparently back to 1907 until WWII where landowners decided to compete with each other on whom would make the tallest and most beautiful neputas. It is only after retrieving some lost schematics and pictures in 1993 that the city of Goshogawara decided to revive the Tachineputa.

Sannai-Maruyama Ancient Village and Museum Aomori Japan
The Sannai-Maruyama is a famous site which had been known since the Edo Period in Japan. Excavation survey which was started in 1992 revealed a large settlement of the Early and Middle Jomon Period (about 4,000-5,500 years ago).
Many pit-dwellings, pillar-supported buildings, mounds, burial pits and jars, as well as numerous numbers of pottery and stone implements, wooden objects, bone and antler artifacts were discovered.
Given to it's significance ahead, Aomori Prefectureal Government decided to preserve this site in 1994.
The maintenance and public viewing project of Sannai-Maruyama in 1995, and the Jomon Jiyuken was opened in November 2002. Sannai-Maruyama Site was registered as a national historical site in March 1997, as a special national historical site in November 2000, and 1958 artifacts were registered as important cultural properties in May 2003.
Aomori Prefecture will continue to preserve and maintain the Sanni-Maruyama Site as a park where visitors can experience the Prehistoric Village life of the Jomon Period.

Welcome to the Festival of Glowing Giants
Asako Kitamura never set out to break any barriers. She simply grew up wanting to become a master nebuta maker, just like her father before her. She spent years perfecting the art of building nebuta, giant paper floats built to take on the shape of warrior gods. Last year, Kitamura made history as the first woman to win first place at Japan’s 300-year-old Aomori Nebuta Festival.

Nebuta Matsuri 2017 - Giant Japanese Floats
Nebuta Matsuri is Aomori City's big summer festival with giant illuminated floats of washi (Japanese paper) on wooden frames. The colorful floats depict figures and scenes from Japanese and Chinese legends and history.
Neputa and Nebuta Museum 2019
I went to the Neputa Museum in Hirosaki and the Nebuta Museum in Aomori.
Neputa Mura.
[ Maniac Japan Travel -Tohoku ]
The Neputa Mura (ねぷた村) or Neputa Village is a museum about Hirosaki's famous festival, the Neputa Matsuri, and also introduces the city's other cultural specialties.
The Neputa Matsuri takes place annually from August 1 to 7 around the same time when Neputa and Nebuta festivals are held all over Aomori Prefecture. It features floats with large painted screens that depict beautiful women, mythological warriors and other themes, and are illuminated from within when paraded through the streets. Several such floats and screens are on display in the Neputa Mura.
Although the main focus of the Neputa Mura is on the Neputa Festival, quite a few of Hirosaki's other specialties are put on display, as well. There are areas devoted to the local shamisen instrument, to popular local handicrafts and to old-fashioned toys. There is also a Japanese garden and a teahouse from the 19th century.
Nebuta Warasse
The Nebuta Warasse (ねぶたの家 ワ・ラッセ, Nebuta no ie Wa Rasse) is an interesting museum dedicated to the city's famous Nebuta Matsuri which is held annually in early August. The museum is housed in a unique building covered in red metal slats and stands along Aomori's waterfront district just north of Aomori Station.
The Nebuta Warasse museum attempts to capture the spirit of the festival and gives visitors a taste of its lively atmosphere, history and traditions. Upon entering the second floor entrance to the exhibitions, visitors are presented with the sights of the festival along a red corridor lined with photos and images from the Nebuta Matsuri's 300 year history. Lanterns in the shape of red goldfish, another symbol of the festival, hang along the corridor where the recorded sounds of taiko drums, flutes, and voices play.
Continuing further into the darkened main hall of the museum are five actual floats that were built for past festivals. Visitors can walk around the floats, which are changed out every year, and admire the craftsmanship that went into their construction. Several hands on and cutaway displays show the underlying structure of the floats while other exhibits show how the designs have evolved over time.
On weekends and holidays, there are occasional performances by Haneto dancers who demonstrate the unique Nebuta Matsuri dance accompanied by live music played on taiko drums and flutes. Nebuta Warasse also has a restaurant and a well stocked museum shop selling all sorts of local souvenirs and food.
【Japanese Huge Portable Shrines】 at Aomori Nebuta Festival
The Aomori Nebuta Festival is one of the biggest festivals in Japan held in Aomori at the beginning of August.
The scene where Nebuta, huge portable shrine, floating in the dark night parades at Aomori city center is famous all over the country.
Nearly 3 million people visit the sights from home and abroad every year.
It is said that the Aomori Nebuta Festival is a deformation of a Chinese ceremony in which paper lanterns are floated down a river from the Tanabata Festival which came to Japan in A.D. 710 to 794.
The customs such as sending off spirit to the sky that had been in Aomori since ancient times, integrated with the ceremony in the Tanabata festival from China to create the custom of making the big lanterns.
The maximum height of Nebuta is 5 m, the width is 9 m, the depth is 7 m. They are mainly made of paper, wood, and bamboo.
It takes a very long time to decide the design of Nebuta that is based on a concept of historical stories.
The theme is not only based on kabuki and Japanese myths but also Chinese myths and historical stories.
Nebuta creators are professionals.
They produce Nebuta with an extremely high technology.
The one who can create special Nebuta is called “Nebuta master
Only 6 people have been certificated as the master of the Nebuta festival with a history of almost 100 years.
