The Nebuta Matsuri is considered by many as Japan's top festival and I traveled 600 km north to the northern most city of Honshu to participate in the fun!
What makes Nebuta so amazing?
★ It could be the illuminated Nebuta floats that are pulled down on the city streets, turning and bowing to the crowd.
They're often in the form of mythological Japanese gods or dieties, larger than life in size.
★ Perhaps it's the taiko drums and flute players that make this festival no 1. The beat with those mystical flutes stays in your mind and body days after the festival has ended.
★ It could be the haneto dancers dressed in special yukata dancing and screaming Rasera! Rasera!
The answer is that they all when put together make this festival a must-see when you visit Japan in the summer.

Aomori Nebuta Matsuri - Aomori - 青森ねぶた祭り - 4K Ultra HD
The Aomori Nebuta is a Japanese fire festival held annually between August 2nd and 7th in Aomori city featuring over twenty nebutas or massive lantern floats based on kabuki or mythical stories.
The Aomori Nebuta Festival is thought to have originated from the Tanabata festival, but its real roots are unknown. It is believed that the Tanabata Festival from China and the cultural traditions of the Tsugaru region blended together. People began to make lanterns with paper, bamboo, and candles, which over the years changed in shape and size to the current nebuta.
Being one of Tohoku’s 3 biggest matsuri, the Aomori Nebuta gathers more than 3 million visitors per year and it is a highly recommended festival to check out if you are visiting Japan during the summer!

On dit que le festival d’Aomori Nebuta trouve ses origines dans le festival de Tanabata du fait qu’une possible fusion entre le festival chinois de Tanabata et les traditions culturelles de la région de Tsugaru soit souvent évoquée. Or les véritables racines d’Aomori Nebuta restent inconnues. Les habitants d'Aomori ont commencé à créer ces lanternes avec du papier, du bambou, et des bougies, qui ont ensuite évolué au fil des années vers les formes et les tailles des nebutas actuels.
Etant l’un des trois plus grand matsuri de Tohoku, le festival d’Aomori Nebuta attire plus de 3 millions de visiteurs chaque année, et est fortement recommandé aux touristes de passage au Japon en été !

Japanese festival - Huge Portable Shrine at Aomori Nebuta Festival ①
The Aomori Nebuta Festival is one of the biggest festivals in Japan held in Aomori at the beginning of August.
The scene where Nebuta, huge portable shrine, floating in the dark night parades at Aomori city center is famous all over the country.
Nearly 3 million people visit the sights from home and abroad every year.
It is said that the Aomori Nebuta Festival is a deformation of a Chinese ceremony in which paper lanterns are floated down a river from the Tanabata Festival which came to Japan in A.D. 710 to 794.
The customs such as sending off spirit to the sky that had been in Aomori since ancient times, integrated with the ceremony in the Tanabata festival from China to create the custom of making the big lanterns.
The maximum height of Nebuta is 5 m, the width is 9 m, the depth is 7 m. They are mainly made of paper, wood, and bamboo.
It takes a very long time to decide the design of Nebuta that is based on a concept of historical stories.
The theme is not only based on kabuki and Japanese myths but also Chinese myths and historical stories.
Nebuta creators are professionals.
They produce Nebuta with an extremely high technology.
The one who can create special Nebuta is called “Nebuta master
Only 6 people have been certificated as the master of the Nebuta festival with a history of almost 100 years.

The Aomori Nebuta Festival 2019
This is easily on of the most well-known and popular festivals in Japan! The Aomori Nebuta draws tourists from all around the world from the 2nd to the 7th of August every year. The first 5 nights feature an illuminated night parade and thousands of dancers and the festival concludes with the floats on barges in Aomori Harbor with a spectacular fireworks show.

The Thrilling Nebuta Festival - Journeys in Japan - English
The Nebuta Festival attracts some three million visitors to Aomori City every August. Nebuta are giant lantern floats measuring five meters high and nine meters wide. They often depict scenes from legends and Kabuki stories in vivid, 3-D forms. The floats illuminating the summer night skies are an utterly magnificent sight, so much so that they're also called Art of Light. Michael Rivas, who’s from Hawaii, discovers the Nebuta Festival. He gets up close to the huge floats and also dances in the parade with people he meets in Aomori.
