이번엔 신선한 회를 맛보기 위해 항구 옆, 수산 시장을 찾았다. 쓰가루 해협에서 갓 잡은 싱싱한 생선들로 신선함이 최고인 이곳 수산물센터. 원래는 식당에 납품을 하는 도매 시장이었는데 최근 다른 이유로 많은 사람들이 이곳을 찾는다. 어? 그런데! 사람들이 저마다 쟁반을 들고 있다. 무엇을 하는 걸까? “시장을 돌면서 밥 위에 자신이 원하는 식재료를 이 티켓을 보여 주고 올려달라고 하는 거예요.” 가게를 돌면서 원하는 음식을 취향대로 골라 먹는 맞춤형 덮밥시스템, 놋케동! 요즘은 바로 이 놋케동으로 유명해져 많은 사람들이 이곳을 찾는다. “놋케동은 4년 정도 전부터 시작했는데 정말 인기가 많아서 전 세계 사람들이 찾아오고 있습니다. “맛있다고 하면서 먹고 가면 갑니다. 저희도 그런 것을 보면 기쁘죠.” 수산물센터에 남은 식재료를 소진하기 위해 시작한 놋케동. 저렴한 가격에 신선한 재료를 구입할 수 있어 찾는 손님이 늘었고 그 덕분에 시장이 더욱 활성화 됐다. 나도 오리지널 회덮밥 만들기에 도전해봤다. 식사권을 구매해서 제일 먼저 밥을 담고 쟁반을 들고 시장을 돌면서 밥 위에 좋아하는 해산물을 얹는다. 첫 번째로 싱싱해 보이는 새우와 감칠맛 나는 성게를 표와 교환하고 아오모리의 명물인 쫄깃한 가리비와 고운 빛깔의 청어알까지, 드디어 나만의 해물덮밥 완성이다! 단 돈 만원으로 생각할 수 없었던 뜻밖의 호화스러운 만찬을 즐겼다.

Let’s Go! Aomori City and Hakkoda
Hakkoda Mountains or Hakkoda-san (八甲田山) and the surrounding areas are famous in the Tohoku region for being one of the best sightseeing locations for the autumn leaves, or koyo (紅葉). When we arrived in mid-October, the leaves on Hakkoda were starting to change color but the surrounding areas at the lower elevations were still mostly green. Similar to cherry blossom season, you have to be lucky with timing and weather to see the autumn leaves at their peak color without them falling from the trees. The colors could have been a deeper orange on the mountains so I will be sure to return to this area again to see it at its best.

Aomori City is located only a few hours North of Sendai via bullet train. To get to Hakkoda-san, you can take public transit (JR East) buses that depart from Aomori Station and pass through Shin-Aomori Station that take you directly to the base of the Hakkoda Ropeway in about one hour. These buses can also take you to Lake Towada and Oirase Stream which are also popular destinations for autumn leaves. Lake Towada offers boat rides that can take you around Towadako or Towadako to Nenokuchi.
The Let's Go Series was produced to inspire my students to get outside and explore. The premise is that the majority of the dialogue is with basic English so that junior high school students learning English as a second language can follow along.

Pasensyahan Friends Goes to Japan - S01E03 - Hirosaki
Taking the Shinkansen from Tokyo, we went to Aomori Prefecture. In this episode, we are going to explore Hirosaki. Located South West of the Aomori Prefecture, Hirosaki is considered to be the one of the best Cherry Blossom Spots in North of Japan. Sakura usually blooms in late April in this part of the country. Developed as a castle town, Hirosaki, is also considered as the largest producer of apples in all of Japan. We tried Fuji Apple in Japan and had the best sushi place in Aomori!

青森県の十和田八幡国立公園の国道沿いにあるのが、地獄沼。
ここは過去に噴火した八甲田山の火口跡で、
近くから湧き出る温泉水が溜まって、できました。
泉温は98度、付近には火山活動のなごり、いくつもの噴気口があり、
硫黄を多く含んだガスや温泉も湧いています。
色づき始めた紅葉も印象的な、地獄沼の初秋の風景をお楽しみください。
