Aosta is the capital of the Valle d’Aosta region, in northwestern Italy. It’s near ski resorts and the Gran Paradiso National Park, which has an alpine botanical garden, trails and wildlife like ibexes and eagles. Remnants of Aosta’s Roman past include the Arch of Augustus and the Praetorian Gate, once the city’s main entrance. In the Sant’Orso complex are a Romanesque cloister and a priory with a frescoed chapel.
Jagged Alpine peaks rise like marble cathedrals above the regional capital Aosta, a once-important Roman settlement that retains a charming historic centre, while also sprawling rather untidily across the valley floor. Bounced around between Burgundy (France) and Savoy (Italy) in the Middle Ages, the modern town remains bilingual, with a Valdostan culture that can be heard in its musical local dialect and simple but hearty cuisine.
Aosta is an old Roman town at 583m above sea level, and the largest in the region with a population of 35,000. Full of things to see and do, it’s surrounded by magnificent mountains, including the Grand Combin and the Mont Vélan to the north, Emilius and the Becca di Nona to the south, and the Testa del Rutor to the west.
Located in the centre of the Aosta Valley, the town was founded by the Romans in 25 BC at a geographical point where the physiographic catchment of the Dora Baltea reaches its maximum width, and where the main roads heading to France and Switzerland converge. The presence of the Piccolo and Gran San Bernardo Alpine hills makes Aosta an important strategic junction from a transport point of view (nowadays thanks to the Mont Blanc and Gran San Bernardo Tunnels).
Rich in monuments from pre-historical, Roman, medieval and later times, Aosta makes a fascinating historical case study. There’s the megalithic area of Saint-Martin de Corleans; the Praetoria Gate, one of the few examples from Roman times still perfectly intact; the Theatre; the forum Cryptoporticus, the perimeter of the boundary walls almost completely intact; a well-preserved extra muros villa; and the magnificent Augustus’ Arch. Ancient roads, fountains, wash-houses, votive chapels, sundials, historical houses and courtyards are also in abundance.
Those staying in the ski resort of Pila often take the 20-minute gondola-ride from there down to Aosta town to sample its delights. There are plenty of shops selling delicious local delicacies, arts and crafts; and lots of restaurants and bars to sample too.
The thousand-year-old Sant‘Orsa Fair is held each year in the centre of Aosta on the 30 and 31 January. Its origins have been lost over time, so much so that someone set the year 1000 as its starting date. So each fair is now numbered as though the first one had been held at the start of the second millennium of our time. Attracting visitors from afar, it’s a craft fair with artefacts in wood, soapstone, wrought iron, lace and woollen fabrics, as well as farming equipment, furniture, household utensils and sculptures.
Aosta is also home to two masterpieces of Medieval art: the Cathedral and San‘Orso. Both feature amazing Ottanian frescoes and a wooden choir; the cathedral also has a treasure museum; and Sant‘Orso Collegiate boasts enchanting cloisters too.

Aosta is the principal city of Aosta Valley, a bilingual region in the Italian Alps, 110 km (68 mi) north-northwest of Turin. It is situated near the Italian entrance of the Mont Blanc Tunnel, at the confluence of the Buthier and Dora Baltea, and at the junction of the Great and Little St. Bernard routes. In this setting of stately mountains and diverse valleys sits the oldest National Park, the Gran Paradiso, where it is still possible to see animals in their natural habitat - ibex, chamois, eagles and marmots live in vegetation that changes according to the surrounding environment.
Historically, the Aosta Valley has been viewed as land of contact and conjuncture between Italy and France; such is also reflected in its official bilingualism and its special status as autonomous region. The great modern tunnels of Gran San Bernardo and, even more so, those under Mont Blanc - extraordinary engineering masterpieces that run to France - highlight even more clearly this aspect of intersection between Italy and the rest of Europe.

In the soothing setting offered by the Aosta Valley, there is this spectacular Medieval castle for sale.
Built in the 12th century, when it was a square keep surrounded by defensive walls. It was then transformed by Pierre Sarriod in 1260 who gave it a polygonal and almost rounded shape that still distinguishes it from the other castles in this area.
This ancient chateaux was heavily damaged by two big fires in the second half of the 19th century, it was then restored in the early 1900s by Sir Gonella, who put the works in the wise hands of architect Chevalley.
RIDING THE ATAVIC TRAIL WITH AOSTA VALLEY FREERIDE
The project seeks to value antique Valser history. A population that originates from Switzerland and migrated over the alps into the Aosta Valley. They crossed the Teoludo pass, then moved along the Monte Rosa Valley to settle in Gressoney.
From the Germanic dialect to the architectural style, even after centuries, the cultural influence they brought from the other side of the alpine chain still lives.
Our vision here is to ride and travel on the original Valser trails where they once crossed by foot and rode mules. And by doing so, reconnecting the past, appreciate our history and exchange with the present Italian-Swiss MTB community. It’s a delicious treat for all you MTB history geeks!
Fénis Castle, Aosta, Travel In Northern Italy
The Italian medieval castle at Fénis is one of the most dramatic, and popular, fortresses of the Aosta Valley. Despite the extensive defensive architecture, it was actually built to be an impressive residence.
First documented in the 13th century, it belonged to the Lords of Challant until the 18th century. The castle then fell into a state of neglect and was used by local villagers to store hay. Two major restoration efforts, in 1895 and 1935, returned the monument to it's current condition.
An inner courtyard, occupies the center of the keep and features wood balconies. Frescoes from the 15th century illustrate Saint George killing the dragon. Surrounding walls are decorated with images of saints, sages and proverbs in old French.

Motsetta or Mocetta is a salami of ancient origin and it is the traditional cutting of the Italian Western Alps.
It is produced in the entire Valle d'Aosta and Piedmont (Canavese, Valsesia, Ossola Valley ...), from lean cuts of meat, mainly muscle or thigh. The meat may be to beef or sheep, goat, pig or wild game (the latter especially popular among the chamois meat).
Preparation
The meat is seasoned with garlic, bay leaf, rosemary, sage and other mountain herbs, then salt and covered with the liquid from the meat itself. Thus prepared is left to stand in a cool place for a variable time: in the case of home preparation, the meat is put under weight to insaporirsi up to 20 days. Butchers craft, often in environment in which it was produced the vacuum, the meat is massaged by machines to maintain a homogeneous color and maintain the aromatic notes. For both modes, the meat must then dry and season hanging in a ventilated and dry.
Motsetta can be consumed as is fresh, ie still tender, or in advanced aging, which makes the meat uniformly dark but also harder, which requires a very thin slicing.

There has been much discussion about the specific destination of this monument which dates back to the Augustan age; its main purpose was to constitute a structure of containment and regularization of the land that in that area of the city had to be a slight slope from north to south and created a difference in height between the sacred area and the adjacent forensic plateaus. In addition to this safe structural function, the hypothesis that the basement part could serve as a warehouse and a military barn (horreum) has been advanced over the years, but following the latest studies it is possible to radically exclude this intended use, both for the structural aspect of the monument, both for its particular location, and after comparison with other similar specimens.
The marble colonnade (porticus triplex) that dominated it (now destroyed and of which no archaeological evidence remains in situ) served as a scenic backdrop to the two original twin temples of the sacred terrace. We are here in the northern sector of the Roman forensic complex, right in front of the entrance of the Cathedral, in correspondence of an elevated sacred area, in turn divided by the one for civil and commercial use (piazza Severino Caveri), thanks to the passage of a minor decumanus, roughly corresponding to the current Via Mons. De Sales.
From a technical-planimetric point of view the Aosta cryptoporticus is divided into three arms arranged in a horseshoe shape and internally divided into two barrel vaulted naves with a central sequence of lowered arches. The two side arms measure 71.80 m; the central one, more extended, reaches an internal length of 87.10 m.
Originally two monumental accesses had to open at the ends of the side wings opening up to the sides of the central staircase.
The galleries are illuminated by a series of splayed windows that also ensure a suitable air exchange; during the year the temperature inside the cryptoporticus remains constant.
Compared to all those cases, old and new, italic and provincial, which the archaeological literature has defined and continues to define as examples of public cryptoporticus, especially forensic, even the Aostan could be interpreted as a structure of prestige linked to the imperial cult, as to the self-celebration of local notables as well as religious or professional city corporations.
It is therefore legitimate to suppose that cryptoportices can be read as environments endowed with a particular political-liturgical function: a sort of hinge place between the sacred (the sacred area and its templar buildings) and the profane (ie the true and own public square).

The Fénis Castle, in French: Château de Fénis, is an Italian medieval castle located in the small town of Fénis. It is one of the most famous castles in the Aosta Valley, and for its architecture and its many towers and battlemented walls has become one of the major tourist attractions of the region, if not the number one.
The castle first appears in a document in 1242 as a property of the Viscounts of Aosta, the Challant family. At that time it probably was a simple keep surrounded by walls. From 1320 to 1420, under the lordship of Aymon of Challant and of his son Boniface I of Challant, the castle was expanded to the actual appearance.
Under Aymon's lordship the castle got its pentagonal layout, the external boundary wall and many of the towers. In 1392 Boniface of Challant began a second building campaign to build the staircase and the balconies in the inner courtyard and the prison. He also commissioned Piedmontese painter Giacomo Jaquerio to paint frescoes on the chapel and on the inner courtyard. Under Boniface I the castle reached its greatest splendor: it was a rich court surrounded by a vegetable plot, a vineyard and a garden where the lord and his guests could relax.
The castle belonged to the lords of Challant until 1716, when Georges-François of Challant had to sell it to Count Baldassarre Castellar of Saluzzo Paesana in order to pay his debts, and for the castle was the beginning of a period of decline. It was turned into a rural dwelling and became a stable and a barn.
In 1895 architect Alfredo d'Andrade purchased it and started a restoration campaign to secure the damaged structures. In 1935 a second campaign by De Vecchi and Mesturino completed the restoration and gave the castle the current appearance. The rooms were also provided with wood period furniture.
The castle is today owned by the Autonomous Region Aosta Valley, which turned it into a museum.
Despite its impressive defensive structure, the castle is situated at the top of a small knoll and not of a promontory or another inaccessible and easily defensible place. In fact it was not built for military purposes.
The inner courtyard, at the centre of the keep, shows a semi-circular stone staircase and wood balconies. At the top of the staircase a 15th-century fresco features Saint George killing the dragon, while the walls of the balconies are decorated with images of sages and prophets and proverbs in old French.
The interior of the castle is divided into three floors: on the ground floor it is possible to visit the weaponry, the kitchen, the woodshed and the storage tank to collect rainwater. On the first floor there were the rooms of the lords of the castle, the chapel with frescoes by Giacomo Jaquerio and his school and the court. The second floor, in the attic, was dedicated to the servant's quarter and is not visitable.
