My Visit to Diwali Mela, 2017 / Auckland City, New Zealand
Diwali is a five day Hindu festival celebrated at new moon on the 15th day of the Hindu month of Kartik or Karthika (October/November). It symbolizes the victory of good over evil. It is the festival of lights, sweets, new clothes, gifts, and fireworks. This festival is not only celebrated by people living in India but also Indians who are living in abroad.
This is the first time when I am away from my friends and family on this festival. This has I had a chance to experience and be a part of a celebration of Diwali festival of New Zealand. So, I decided to experience it and capture some highlights to share with you all.
The Asia New Zealand Foundation first held the Diwali festivals in 2002 to raise public awareness of traditional Indian culture in New Zealand.
This year Diwali Mela is organized by Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED), on behalf of Auckland Council, and founding partner Asia New Zealand Foundation on 14th – 15th October in Aotea Square, Queen St, CBD, Auckland. It was a free event. The main street of the city was blocked and decorated with white tents and colorful lights. It took us around 25 minutes to get the parking space.
People were enthusiastic and in a mood of celebration. They came with their family and friends. It was the combination of Indians, Fiji Indians, Asians and new Zealanders (popularly known as kiwis). They were enjoying cultural dance festival, Indian vegetarian food, shopping, and DJ.
It was a wonderful evening for me in this beautiful city.
Thank you!!

Parnell 255 Responding, K' Rd, Upper Queen St, Cross St, 12 Dec 08
It never rains but it pours... After hoping all year to get a video of 255 in action, I got two in one day!
There appeared to be smoke coming from one of the buildings on Cross Street behind K' Road. I didn't have time to stick around though...
