Ο Κούρος του Απόλλωνα, Νάξος / Kouros of Apollonas, Naxos Greece

Located on the northeast coast of Naxos, Apollonas is a charming fishing village with fish taverns and a sandy beach. An ancient statue of Kouros, which is a half-finished 10 ½ meter statue, dating back to the 6th century BC is found near Apollonas. Many archaeologists believe the statue to be of the god Dionysus.

Kouros of Flerio are long statues of white Naxian marble, located in a village garden in Melanes, a small village on Naxos, one of the Cycladic islands, in Greece. Each weigh between 5 and 7 tonnes. The largest kouros on Naxos is10.45 metres long is the Kouros of Apollonas, which weighs 80 tonnes, but is with less details.

In Flerio, near Mili, is an ancient marble-working area. There remain two examples of kouroi, large marble statues created in the 7th and 6th centuries BC. Each measures about 5.5m and both are in a broken state (the theory being that they were damaged during transportation or were simply left unfinished by dissatisfied sculptors). The first kouros you come to is lying on its back under a tree; the second is on a hillside about 800m away.
Besides Apollonas and Melanes, the locals discovered yet another impressive Kouros in a lying position within a field in the Flerio area (also near Melanes village, in a walking distance from the other Kouros), and archeologist research shows that this statue dates back to 570 BC. Its height is one of the most impressive features, reaching almost 6 meters, while one of the legs is broken. The statue is assumed to be a special order from a wealthy family and has been left unfinished as it is the case with other ones, with experts suggesting that it was probably damaged during the creation process and thus was abandoned in the mountainous region. The technique used is characteristic of the Naxian sculptors and the statue was named “Ellinas” (Greek) as it was considered to embody the virtues of the race and the ideal physical and personality traits a young male should have.

Απόλλωνας, Νάξος / Apollonas village, Naxos Greece
Apollonas Naxos, From Sunrise to Sunset, 6/6/2018
Apollonas village is a settlement on Naxos’s northeastern coast about 36km from the island's capital (Chora - Hora). It is a beautiful fishing village which has been inhabited since antiquity, probably on account of the marble quarry.
Picturesque whitewashed houses are smeared behind an attractive small sandy beach which stretches on into a larger beach strewn with white egg-like pebbles offering a palette of gold, white and the blue expanse of the sea. All characteristically Greek colours. The beach is lined with taverns, tourist shops and a mini-market, there are also rooms to let, hotels, tavernas and cafes. It is an ideal for relaxing breaks and can be used as a base for exploring the surrounding area with its unique sights.
The unfinished 10.5 meter statue of Kouros can be seen just a few meters outside the entrance to the village. The statue dates back to the 6th century BC and archaeologists believe it represents the god Dionysus. (source: )

Perhaps considered a minor Statue in terms of size and scale, but this statue is just as epic as other more massive statues in terms of vision, but why was the project abandoned?

Apollonas Naxos
Apollonas, the port village of the settlement of Komiaki on Naxos’ northeastern coast, has been inhabited since antiquity, mainly on account of the marble quarry that extends to the north and west. It was also the port from which Naxos marble was exported throughout the operation of the ancient quarry.
The huge ancient marble statue (Kouros) of Apollo lies in supine position just a few meters outside the entrance to the village, while remnants of the ancient port have been found at Marmara position.
Another sight in the area is the ruins of the prehistoric fort of Kalogeros, towering on a hilltop above the inlet.
The village of Apollonas today is the most touristically developed settlement of northern Naxos. Featuring picturesque white houses spreading behind an attractive sandy beach, rooms to let, hotels, tavernas and cafes, it is suitable for relaxing breaks and as a base for exploring the surrounding area which is replete with unique sights.
Agios Ioannis is the patron saint of the settlement and celebrates on August 29. Vespers on the eve are followed by a litany procession of the icon and a traditional feast in the local tavernas.
The village also holds the annual Fisherman’s Feast on June 28, when the blessing of the waters and boats is followed by feasting.
