The ancient city of Apollonia, Albania (English Subs)
Apollonia, Albania
Apollonia was an ancient city in Illyria, located on the right bank of the river Vjosë. Its ruins are situated in the Fier region, near the village of Pojani, in modern-day Albania. Apollonia was founded on a site initially occupied by Illyrian tribes and was perhaps the most important of the several classical towns known as Apollonia. Apollonia flourished in the Roman period and was home to a renowned school of philosophy, but began to decline in the 3rd century AD when its harbor started silting up as a result of an earthquake. It was abandoned by the end of Late Antiquity.

The Ancient City of Butrint
The Microcosmos of Mediterranean
The first Albanian site to be included on UNESCO’s World Heritage was Butrint, in the south of the country, in 1992. It has been inhabited since prehistoric times and was a part of the Greek and Roman colonies.
Later, it experienced a period of prosperity under Byzantine administration, which was followed by a short period of Venetian rule and the eventual abandonment of the city in late medieval times. The present state of the archaeological site shows traces of all the time periods the city has gone through.
The most ancient objects found at the archeological site in Butrint are a stone hammer and a shaft belonging to the second half of the second millennium B.C.
Hekateus made first mention of the city at the end of the sixth century B.C., affirming that the city was built according to Troy and that the origin of the name refers to the sacrifice of a bull, Buthrotos, provided by the Trojan prince Aeneas on his way to Dodona. During its early period, Butrint was the center of the Kaonic tribes, later to become part of the kingdom of Epirus.
In the years 1926-1936 the Italian archeologist Luigi Ugolini led excavations in southern Albania, focusing his work in Butrint and Finiq, where he discovered the baptistery, the theater, the basilica, the public baths, many houses, and a great number of objects and sand statues of inestimable value.
The most extraordinary objects discovered in the theatre of Butrint are the statue of Apollo, the goddess of Butrint, the marble heads of Zeus, the portrait of Agrippina, and many Latin and Greek epigraphs. Parts of the city were rebuilt during the fifth century B.C.
The Ancient City of Apollonia
The ancient city of Apollonia is situated in southwestern Albania, about 13 miles from the city of Fier. The fascinating landscape of the archeological park, which has been preserved in an exceptionally intact condition, comprises a successful combination between the beauty of monuments and nature, attractive through its long history, in an atmosphere of relaxation and meditation. Its foundation took place immediately after the foundation of Epidamnus – Dyrrachium and quickly became one of the most eminent cities of the Adriatic basin, which was mentioned more frequently from the other 30 (thirty) cities bearing the same name during Antiquity. The city lay in the territory of the political communion of the Taulantii and was broadly known as Apollonia of Illyria. According to the tradition it was founded during the first half of the 6th century BC by Greek colonist from Corfu and Corinth, led by Gylax, which named the city after his name (Gylakeia). After its quick establishment the city changed its name to Apollonia, according to the powerful divinity Apollo. It stands on a hilly plateau from where expands the fertile plain of Musacchia with the Adriatic Sea and the hills of Mallakastra. The ruins of Apollonia are discovered in the beginning of the 19th century.
The city flourished during the 4th century AD as an important economic and trade center. Over time it was expanded over the whole hilly slope including an area of ca. 81 ha, surrounded by a large wall of 3 km of length and 3 m of width. Although Apollonia was situated few kilometers away from the Adriatic Sea, its position on the right bank of the Aoos River (modern Vjosë) enabled its communication with the coastal part of the territory. In the two hilltops dominating the city stands the temenos area (the sacred area around the temple of Apollo) and the Arx (military citadel). Between the two hilltops were situated the public buildings of the ancient city, which continued to experience a period of grandeur and splendor under the successive roman rule (since 229 BC). The fame of the city attracted many personalities of the largest empire of the ancient world as the eminent roman philosopher and orator Cicero, which noted Apollonia in his Philippics as magna urbs et gravis (a great and important city).
During this period the city became one of the most important gateways of the transballkanic Via Egnatia, while in its famous Academy has studied and underwent military training Octavianus, accompanied by Agrippas, the eminent general and statesman of the Roman Empire. After a long period of continuous economic and cultural development, Apollonia fell into decline until its total abandonment during the medieval period. The culture and the general development of the city maintained a clear Greek character throughout its existence. However, the independent economic and politic activity as well as the close relationships with the Illyrian hinterland determined a distinctive physiognomy of the apollonian culture.

Apollonia - Fier Albania
The archaeological site of Apollonia is located in central-western part of Albania, about 10 km west of Fier. Apollonia was founded in 558 BC by settlers from Corfu and Corinth.
The ancient site of Apollonia was an important port along the route between Rome and Byzantium. Emperor Octavian Augustus studied philosophy there, and later Aristotle mentioned the town in his book. According to the estimations, during its glorious period, about 60,000 inhabitants lived in the town, which was surrounded by a 4 km long wall.
Among the most interesting monuments of the site are the Bouleterion (city council), the library, the triumphal arch, the temple of Artemis and the Odeon.
In the 3rd -4th centuries A.D. Apollonia suffered serious destruction from several earthquakes and the town went into a rapid decline. The ruins of Appolonia serve as an open Archaeological Museum, now.
Next to The archaeological site the Monastery and Church of Saint Mary can be found. The monastery complex was built in the 13th century and one of the best examples of Byzantine architecture in Albania. The monastery houses the Apollonia Museum but at the time of writing the building is under renovation.

Regarding Apollonia:
It is one of the most important archaeological sites of Albania. At the same time one of the most highly frequented places by most of the visitors coming to Albania Cicero, the famed Roman orator, was captivated by the beauty of Apollonia and in his “Philippics” referred to it as “magna urbs et gravis” or “the great and important city.” The ancient city, founded in the 7th century BCE by Greek settlers from Corinth and Corcyra, is located 11 km west of the modern city of Fier. A main work to bring into the sight many of the treasures of Apolonia was made by French mission lead by Prof Leon Rey between 1924 –1938. Archaeological excavations have shown that Apollonia reached its zenith during the 4th – 3rd century BCE. Studies estimate that around 60,000 inhabitants lived inside the city gates. The city has a 4 km long wall encircling an area of 137 hectares. Sources depict a flourishing culture with a busy harbor along this active trading route. Among the most interesting remains is the city council building, the library, the triumphal arch and the temple of Artemis. The Odeon, from the 2nd century B.C, is also noteworthy as it once accommodated approximately 10,000 spectators. There is also a spectacular 77 m long stoa with a covered walkway. An earthquake in the 3rd century CE, in addition to causing damage to infrastructure, altered the path of the Vjosa River and the harbor eventually silted up. This effectively changed the trading route and the once proud city declined until it was nearly uninhabited. Apollonia was “rediscovered” in the 18th century CE, and archaeological efforts have continued intermittently throughout the 20th century CE. Today the site is easily accessible from the nearby city of Fier and it offers both unique views of the Adriatic coastline and numerous historical and archaeological items of great interest to visitors. Apollonia has today the status of an Archaeological Park.
