Brew Review #90 Appalachian Brewing Co Special
In this one we cover four different brews form Appalachian Brewing Company (ABC). They were established in 1997 proudly serving the Harrisburg, Gettysburg Pa area with some of the finest craft brews in the state of Pa!
Craft beer brewing is flourishing in PA
By: James Tully
YORK, Pa. -- According to the Brewer's Association the economic impact of craft beer in Pennsylvania is nearly $2 billion a year.
While consumers are reaping the benefits of many new brews with local ties, many breweries themselves are experiencing success. In its 18th year of operation Appalachian Brewing Company is doing big things.
I think they always envision success I don't think they envisioned growth at this pace, Mike Parker, ABC's marketing manager said.
The company will soon undergo a $4 million expansion.
With the growth of our soda product and now moving our soda production out of Harrisburg to the west shore, we have all this room and what are we going to do at ABC? We're going to brew beer, Parker said.
They will be offering four new flagship beers in 2015. ABC's growth is right in line with craft beer production in the state, which right now is the second largest distributor in the country.
According to the Brewer's Association, Pennsylvania produced more than 1.7 million barrels of craft beer in 2013. The craft beer business is obviously booming and Parker has an idea why.
You have a beer; it's brewed with Appalachian spring water right here in Harrisburg, probably a couple miles from your house, once you try beer like this it's hard to go back to the big beers, Parker said.
Across town from ABC a much smaller operation also sees a bright future ahead.
Now everyone knows of and wants craft beer, we just happened to be right in the middle of that wave, Matt DePrato, co-owner of the Liquid Hero Brewery, said.
Liquid Hero, which is in York, has only been in operation since 2011, but plans to triple its distribution next year.
DePrato is from the area and said there's value in a local brew.
A lot of people like to get tied to that, they like to say I know those guys, I've been there, I've seen that brewery. That just creates one of the many favorites they'll hold in their index, DePrato said.
In addition to being local, the beer has to be good. Liquid Hero recently reached a medal round at the American Brew Fest.
For the Liquid Hero team right now this is a passion based business, they still have their day jobs. Of course they firmly believe that soon won't be the case.
Harrisburg Beer Week kicks off
By: Bryant Maddrick
HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The first ever Harrisburg Beer Week has begun.
For people like Bill Olsen, it's the recipe for a good experience during the week-long event.
Have a good time and get to meet people, Olsen said. I just want to try some different beers that are out there and see what this is all about and hope we have a good time.
Harrisburg Beer Week was created to introduce people to the area's growing beer industry,
Right now the trend seems to be towards eating and drinking locally, event co-organizer, Sara Bozich, said.
Bozich is one of four women behind the event. She says after hearing of other cities holding their own beer week celebrations, it was Harrisburg's turn.
We have a really solid craft beer community. We have a lot of breweries for the area. Really within a 20 to 30 mile radius. There are so many breweries you can drive to and check out, Bozich said.
One of the businesses participating in the event is Zero Day Brewing in Midtown. It's been open since April 8 and the event is certainly helping business.
I have a castle of kegs we have kicked. Totally blew our budgeted planned beer sales out of the water, co-owner Brandalynn Armstrong said.
Armstrong says she hopes the week-long event helps people appreciate the local beer scene.
Events like beer week really raise awareness that there is this culture going on and it's not just the people who go to one bar, it raises awareness for all of the small businesses, the restaurants and it's not just beer, Armstrong said.
The event is also a charity for the Harrisburg River Rescue. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the volunteer organization.
For more on the event schedule, head to the organization's website at harrisburgbeerweek.com.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
