Carl The Bear- A lonesome fugitive from the TWRA on 27July 2018 just south of Kingsport
A young male black bear sent packing by his mama this spring had become a frequent visitor at the Sonic Drive-In on Fort Henry Drive south of Kingsport. He would be seen pacing on top of the closed metal dumpster and longing for a discarded hot dog, banana split, or a strawberry limeade locked inside. The staff at the Drive-In named him Carl and he became a TV news celebrity on WJHL. Unfortunately some patrons started trying to feed him. This brought in the TWRA with a bear trap trailer and a reservation for Carl at the Kettlefoot Bear Reserve in eastern Sullivan County (Cherokee National Forest).
A few days after his appearance on WJHL newscast he created a bit of a sensation in our nearby residential area by just wandering through. He was seen by a neighbor shaking a small apple tree in our yard (the squirrels and deer had already pillaged it).
On 27 July my spouse was startled when she looked up to see Carl looking in the kitchen window at her. I came to see the cause of the excitement and grabbed a video camera. This is the result. The hickory nuts are just coming into season and hopefully Carl will be able to find plenty of proper bear food now and later when the acorns ripen.
He has some really cool moves. I wonder if he could learn to play the CLAW-hammer banjo or at least the upright bass? (I read that they can unscrew the lid on food jars which is more than many humans can do.)
News report from WJHL indicate he is still at-large. Goody!
From WJHL (quote):
KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) - State wildlife officials say a bear they had been trying to capture since last month was spotted the day after they removed a trap to capture it.
Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency spokesperson Matthew Cameron says a wildlife officer removed a trap last Thursday that had been set in the Colonial Heights community. He says the trap was removed due to lack of bear activity.
But the day after it was removed, the bear was spotted in the area once again, Cameron says.
