Richard Savoie - Wintertime
Richard Savoie - Wintertime
Music, Carlo Galozzi
Richard Savoie is a Quebec painter born in Moncton New Brunswick. He comes from a family of artists, the works of his uncle Roméo Savoie is part of Canada’s National Gallery.
Savoie spent part of his childhood by the sea and is still inspired by the sounds of its many moods, from the gentle lapping of waves on the shore to the thundering roar of surf whipped by a wild wind.
He studies art with Gabrielle Messier and Yolaine Lefebvre and becomes a full time artist by the 1980s.
Now he uses colour to capture these sounds from his childhood. Like Baudelaire, he is fascinated by the parallels between colour and sound and is inspired by their similarities. A fervent pastellist, he talks passionately of his art. His reverence for pure colour is almost religious and explains both his respect for colour and his desire to master all its nuances to better serve his art.
He is well versed in the theories of Eugene Chevreul, a 19th century chemist whose colour theories inspired many neo-impressionist painters.
He is familiar with the optical effects of juxtaposing pure colour. Each application will influence the next and the final colour is determined by the eye through the subtle blending of shades perceived by the optic nerve.
It is a delight to hear him speak about complementary colours and the subtleties of his art as a pastellist. He appreciates the durability of pure pigment, impervious to fading over time.
Savoie knows the value of precision in his work, always aware of the powdery volatility of his medium that allows very little room for touch-ups. He can scarcely conceal his pleasure when he picks up his colour sticks, arranged in orderly rows like a regiment of toy soldiers.
The pastel crayons work their magic in his fingers to render wilderness landscapes where rivers white with foam cascade through narrow channels under the brilliant skies of the changing seasons.
Wilderness, forests, rivers teeming with fish, deserted lanes or lively streets, Richard Savoie pauses to observe it all and to sketch the wonders of the world around him.
Each work by Richard Savoie reveals another fragment of the universe in a tapestry of light and colour that allows viewers to savour the finesse of his fresh and spontaneous approach.
Richard Savoie’s work can be found in major galleries throughout Canada and is also part of some of the country’s most important collections.

Speed Painting : New Brunswick Cloudscape
My first time creating a speed time lapse of myself painting a fun sunset near my home. It is an acrylic 6 x 6 inch on canvas with an entire range of bright saturated colours used. It is pretty cool watching how a painting comes together layer upon layer.

Art Battle - Live Competitive Painting
Art Battle is a live competitive painting event held in almost every major city across Canada. Each event sees 12 artists competing against one other in hopes of winning the grand prize of the evening and the chance to compete the in National Championship. The artists have 20 minutes to paint whatever inspires them in the medium of acrylic and as they work, patrons move around the easels to watch their process.
At the end of each round the audience votes for their favourite painting and bids in a silent auction for the work they want to take home. All the proceeds of the evenings paintings are split between the artists competing and into growing Art Battle for future artists and patrons. With competitions held every month, this truly is something everyone needs to experience!

Interview with Logan Staats - CTV The Launch
Logan Staats has had a whirlwind couple of days following his win on Wednesday night's preimier of CTV's The Launch. The 29 year old singer/songwriter from Six Nations Reserve, Grand River, Ontario can hold his head high with this honour. His single, The Lucky Ones, that was launched to iTunes following the show, hit #1 over night and, at posting two days later, is still holding the top spot.
Staats was one of five(5) acts competing for the launch, up against Havelin, Julia Tomlinson, The Revel Boys and Vivian Hicks. Two artists were picked to record and perform the new original tune (Staats and Hicks) and only one would be picked to launch. All under the mentorship of Scott Borchetta (founder of Big Machine Label Group, Taylor Swift), Shania Twain (top-selling country artist of all-time) and busbee (songwriter/producer: “Try” - P!nk, My Church - Maren Morris, 'The Fighter - Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood, and Dark Side - Kelly Clarkson)
This week's chosen song, The Lucky Ones, was written by busbee, Bleta Rexha, Maureen McDonald, Justin Franks, Casper & B. The demo we heard on the show was very mainstream Pop. However, Staats version is a simpilfied soulful version that fits him and his style perfectly.
We, at Canadian Beats, were pleased to be able to talk to Staats by phone for this enlightning interview.
About Logan Staats:
Raised in Brantford, Ont., Logan Staats started writing and performing music in his teens, later becoming an award-winning artist. His haunting voice has provided opportunities to share the stage with acts such as Buffy Sainte-Marie, Keith Secola and Mumford and Sons. A product of passion and tireless musical commitment, Logan’s songs are truly his own. Armed with his guitar and harmonica, he has transitioned from the weekend bar circuit to playing sold out venues. His performances are animated by a level of self-possession, sadness, and joy created by an aura of inevitability. Logan is hell bent on raising the bar for Indigenous/mainstream crossover music.

OIL PAINTING TIME LAPSE//The mermaid project Episode 6 Part 2 (Color)
Hi guys, welcome back, this is the second part of the painting process for 'Low Tide'. In this episode I will be adding color to the underpainting that I did in Episode 6 Part 1;
I used m.Graham walnut alkyd for medium to do thin glazes of color on the underpainting. I also used it to 'oil out' the painting after it was completely dry so that I would have a smooth surface to do small details.
'Low Tide' is based on Hopewell Rocks in New Brunswick, Canada
This painting is oil on gessoed board, 8x8 inches.
