25 years with Taves Family Farms Applebarn
The Applebarn celebrates 25 years at Taves Family Farms this fall.
Taves Family Farms in the Spring
A family owned and operated farm attraction located in the Fraser Valley, Taves Family Farms-home of the Applebarn and Pumpkin Farm is celebrating its 22th anniversary this year. Over two decades ago, we opened our doors and have loved welcoming people to our farm ever since.
Our activity list includes U-Pick apples, a Pumpkin Patch, the Country Store and Cider Mill, a Beehive Observatory, hayrides, a pumpkin cannon, corn gun, a bouncy barn, massive jumping pillow, ponyrides, bunny town, a petting zoo, a tractor trail, zipline and hayrides and more. New this year is the expanded Corn Quest Maze-it's a Corn Maze with a quest complete with firepits and tents.
We also sell our own farmfresh veggies and fruit, participate in several farm markets and embrace supporting local initiatives.

Loren Taves
Owner, Taves Family Farms and Applebarn Pumpkin Farm
Located in Abbotsford, BC, Taves Family Farms was established in 1969 by Loren Taves’ parents. After Loren graduated, he and his brother decided to pursue farming and focused on niche markets, starting with gooseberries and then apples that were unique to coastal climates. Shortly afterwards, Loren started growing red and black currants followed by artisan peppers and tomatoes.Today, Taves Family Farms consists of 4.5 acres of greenhouses that grow artisan vegetables.
The Taves are active in farmers’ markets, extending from Abbotsford to Vancouver, where they sell their 100% Natural Apple Cider (picked, pressed and bottled on site), plums, pears, gooseberries, currants, several varieties of apples and tomatoes, miniature peppers and cucumbers, and eggplant.
“Since 1998, I have been involved in selling our produce at farmers’ markets and directly to customers at the farm gate. This lead me to believe that by participating in the direct sale of the food we grow, it’s an important part of the farm as it informs not only the consumers about where the food is grown, and who grows it, but it also teaches the farmer about what consumers want and like. This important process continues on at the various farmers’ markets we attend and at the Applebarn every fall. It’s why we state with pride “Come to the Farm for a Taste of the Country.” (Loren Taves)
The entire operation is founded on environmentally responsible and ethical farming practices, innovation, community, and quality. In 1990, Loren and his wife, Corinne Taves, created the Applebarn—a destination designed for ‘fall family’ fun. Loren’s philosophy is to “continue perfecting the complex relationship between the land and resources and the business of growing food.” He is passionate about farming, and will continue to develop the important and direct connection between the harvest of great food and the families that enjoy it.

APPLE PICKING AT TAVES FAMILY FARM
APPLE PICKING at TAVES FAMILY FARM in ABBOTSFORD, BC
Apologies, the video itself doesn't give much feedback and info to the actual farm and apples.
We went on a Tuesday afternoon in September and it was pretty much empty, we felt like we had the whole farm to ourselves. We had no idea if anyone even worked there, thats how quiet it was.
3 apples were available for picking:
FUJI (though the only ones that were left were all rotten) + ALKMENE (lots available. Good for eating and baking) + HONEYCRISP (good for eating. Found some but not that many, they were small). The Alkmene was definitely most plentiful. And the really nice looking ones were so high up so we had to lift eachother up to get them.
They had other activities like a corn maze, a petting farm, pumpkin picking, the best part for me was prob the GIANT trampoline they had there.
Tried their fresh apple juice slush and it was delicious! I didn't buy any Apple cider to take home.
Overall, you can tell by the video that we had A LOT OF FUN together. If you want the full experience you'd probably have to go on the weekend or something when all the activities areup and running. I personally wouldn't drive all that way (1.5hrs) again just to pick apples but it was a great first experience with lots of laughing!!!

Applebarn's Blossomfest 2019
It was our family's first time in Taves Farm and our first blossomfest experience. It was also our first time in an apple orchard.
As you can see in the video, the kids had so much fun that Gerard is already talking about going back for apple picking and pumpkin patch.
