Bay Circuit Trail: Ipswich MA Ipswich Branch Part 1 Appleton Farms Entry.
Appleton Farms is one of the grand Essex County properties dating back to the earliest settlement period.
It is the current trail head point for a branch that aims to connect to Cranes Beach.
Sustainable Heritage [USGBC+]
Appleton Farms in Hamilton and Ipswich, Massachusetts, is one of the oldest and largest (with more than a thousand acres) continuously operating farms in the United States. Established in 1638 by a land grant to Samuel Appleton, the farm today preserves a bucolic landscape, agricultural traditions, and historic farm buildings that are disappearing in the eastern part of the state. Acquired by the Trustees in 2000, Appleton Farms has the ambitious goal to become carbon-neutral in its near future.

Bay Circuit Trail Concord MA: Walden Pond State Reservation Part 1.
Part 1 of what may as well be called poor little Walden. It rests next to a screeching roadway and major area intersection. A retired landfill snoozes across one street and the roaring railroad that dates back to Henry runs along the back.
It gets clobbered by heat stressed swim seekers in summer. Its relative closeness to Boston, the Thoreau Legend and practical value as a place to swim may make it the essential portal to the Bay Circuit for many.
Trustees Crane Beach Pop-Up Boston
During the summer of 2016 The Trustees created several pop-ups in downtown Boston mirroring the natural, inspired Trustees' places out of town. This video highlights the pop-up based on Crane Beach in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Video by Ben Heider.
About Crane Beach:
Crane Beach is managed for both recreation and conservation – people and ecology – through careful planning. More than five miles of trails wind through coastal dunes here, which shield inland areas from storm waves and flooding. And, Castle Neck is the site of the North Shore’s largest pitch pine forest.
Crane Beach is also among the world’s most important nesting sites for piping plovers, a threatened bird that was nearly hunted to extinction in the 19th century for its eggs and feathers. Crane Beach has been nationally recognized for its successful shorebird protection program. To protect these threatened shorebirds, we ask that you avoid the fenced nesting areas and the wrack, the line of washed-up organic debris where the birds feed and hide.
About The Trustees
The Trustees of Reservations are 125,000 people like you. We love the outdoors. We love the distinctive charms of Massachusetts and all of New England. And we believe in celebrating and protecting them, for everyone, forever.
We enjoy and care for more than 116 special places—more than 27,000 acres—all around Massachusetts. And we are actively building an extended family of friends and neighbors across the state that can help in their different ways.

Apple Picking - Roxbury, MA by khoncepts
Urban gardening at it's best. With the purchase of an antique apple picker, the assistance of my teenage son and a perfect fall day, we harvested over 30 ripe, sweet tasting apples. All the apples that the birds had pecked over were placed in a bag for my friend to use for compost. Living green in the inner city.
