Brahma Temple, Pushkar, Rajasthan - sathya's visit
Pushkar : is a town in the Ajmer district in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is situated 14 km (8.7 mi) northwest ofAjmer at an average elevation of 510 m (1,670 ft) and is one of the five sacred dhams (pilgrimage site) for devout Hindus.
Places to see in pushkar:
Pushkar has many temples. Most of the temples are not very old because many temples were destroyed during Muslim conquests in the area.[1]Subsequently, the destroyed temples were rebuilt. The most famous among all is the 1.Jagat Pitta Shri Brahma temple, built during the 14th century CE. 2. Savitri temple, 3.Varaha temple, 4. Apteshwar Mahadev temple, 5.The Sri Sawai Bhoj Temple, 6.Baba the Cosmic Barber, 7.Temple of Rangji, 8. Man Mahal, 9.Gurudwara Singh Sabha. The Pushkar lake has 52 ghats where pilgrims descend to the lake to bathe in the sacred waters.
1. Jagat Pitta Shri Brahma temple -- The most important temple in Pushkar is the Temple of Lord Brahma, one of the holy trinity of Hinduism. The temple enshrines a life-size idol of Lord Brahma. The word 'Pushkar' means lotus flower, which is said to be the seat of Brahma, one of the Hindu holy trinity, who is worshipped as the creator of this world. The legend has it that the demon Vajra Nabha killed Brahma's children, he in turn struck him with his weapon, a lotus flower. Vajra Nabha died with the impact, and the petals of the lotus fell at three places. One of them is Pushkar, where it gave birth to a lake. Brahma is supposed to have performed sacrifice at this lake on Kartik Purnima (the full moon day of the Kartik month (generally in the month of November)), hallowing the place.
Though Brahma is considered to be the creator of the world, Pushkar is the only temple of this important deity in the whole world. This is also considered as Adi Teerth or Teertharaj meaning ancient holy place or the most important of holy places respectively.
Temple worshiping time: The temple is open for worship between 6:30 am and 8:30 pm during winter and 6:00 am to 9:00 pm during summer, with an interval in afternoon between 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm when the temple is closed.[1][2] Three aratis are held in the temple: Sandhya arati in the evening about 40 minutes after sunset, Ratri Shayan arati (night-sleep arati) about 5 hours past sunset and Mangala arati in the morning, about 2 hours before sunrise.
2. Pushkar Lake -- The prime attraction of Pushkar is the Pushkar Lake which is considered sacred like the Mansarovar Lake in Tibet. Pushkar has become a place of Hindu pilgrimage because of this holy lake. Legend has it that this lake was consecrated to Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe when a lotus dropped from his hand into the vale and a lake emerged in that place.
3. Savitri Temple- This temple that is located at the top of the Ratnagiri Hill is dedicated to Savitri, the wife of Lord Brahma. The temple houses a statue of Goddess Savitri.
4. Old Pushkar- Old Pushkar lake is rebuilt and is located around 5 km from Pushkar lake. According to the ancient texts, Old Pushkar has equal cultural and religious significance for the pilgrims.
5. Bhandarej, Bhangarh and Fort Madhopur: A visit to Bhandarej, Bhangarh and Fort Madhopur from Jaipur via Dausa Town by an Indica or Ambassador taxi would cost about Rs 2,000. Expect rates to go up considerably in the high season.
6. Ajmer: is the nearest tourist attraction that lies outside the city boundaries of Pushkar.
7. Kishangarh: Located 27 kilometres away from Ajmer, there is Kishangarh, famous for its miniature paintings, more popularly known as Bani Thani.
Pushkar Fair: Every year thousands of domestic and international tourists come to be a part of this amazing Pushkar Fair. This fair is organized in 07 Nov To 17 Nov 2013 . Tourists come to take a holy dip in the pushkar lake at the time of karthik purnima, which is basically a full moon day.
How to reach:
By plane:
Pushkar is but a small town and hence has no airport. The nearest airport is in Jaipur. Jaipur is well connected to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai,Kolkata by air.
By bus:
Take a taxi or rickshaw from Ajmer. Frequent buses are available from Ajmer main bus station (INR 12, as of November 2013).

Pushkar Lake Pushkar Fair India, Pushkar India, Pushkar Rajasthan History & Significance of Ghat
Pushkar LakeA sacred lake of the Hindus, Pushkar Lake is of the five most sacred pilgrimage destinations for the Hindus in India. It is believed that when the lotus petals fell from the hands of the Hindu God of Creation, Lord Brahma, the Pushkar Lake was created. This tranquil lake is located in the town of Pushkar in Ajmer district of Rajasthan. According to the Hindu scriptures, the sacred lake of Pushkar is described as Tirtha Raj” or the king of all pilgrimage sites related to a water body. No pilgrimage is said to be complete unless one takes a holy dip here. And if the ritual is performed on Kartik Purnima, it is thought to be equivalent to performing yagnas for several hundred years. The Hindu scriptures also explicitly states the fact that apart from bathing in the ghat, performing a parikrama or circumambulation of the three lakes, the main Pushkar, Madya Pushkar and Kanistha Pushkar, which cover a distance of 16 kms, on the day of Kartik Poornima would be highly auspicious for the devotees. The Pushkar Lake is semi-circular in shape and about 8-10 meters deep. With 52 bathing ghats and over 400 temples around the lake precincts, this sacred lake is thronged by thousands of devotees visiting this town during the Pushkar Fair, held in the months of October-November. There are ten important ghats surrounding the Pushkar Lake, which have been declared as Monuments of National Importance”. These ghats are the Varaha Ghat, Dadhich Ghat, Saptarishi Ghat, Gwalior Ghat, Kota Ghat, Gau Ghat, Yag Ghat, Jaipur Ghat, Karni Ghat and Gangaur Ghat. The sacred lake of Pushkar, along with these ghats, has been under the protection of the royal families of Rajasthan. Even the Maratha kings have made a lot of effort in refurbishing them from time to time. While most of the ghats are named after the Kings or Rajas, the others have special importance attached to them.

Lord Brahma is considered as the Father of this Universe in Indian Mythology. There is an ancient temple of him in Pushkar, Rajasthan. The name of this temple is Jagat Father Brahma Temple. It is very close to the Pushkar lake and Pushkar market. Although, Brahma Ji is not worshiped, yet a large number of devotees throng this temple. Especially during the Pushkar cattle fair / Kartik Purnima in October.
The temple has a four-headed idol of Lord Brahma in its Garbha Griha (Main location, where the Lord Brahma Idol is situated). Three heads are visible from the front, but the fourth head is not easily visible. Since it is behind and there is a mirror to show it to the devotees. In such a situation, to see the fourth head, it has to be slightly slanted.
It is said that this visit will be considered incomplete for the devotee who visited the temple but did not see the fourth head of Brahma. Also, there is a strict ban on photography and videography in this temple. This is the reason why cameras are stored in the locker room outside the temple premises. Locker room and pair house service are free for shoes.
By the way, phones and purses are allowed inside the temple, but inside you will not be able to take photographs, because the deployment of the police will be forced.
After visiting the temple, reach Pushkar Sarovar in the evening and enjoy the breathtaking Mahaarti to be held at six in the evening. There are three major ghats for Aarti. Among them are the first is Brahma Savitri. second is Varaha Ghat and the third is Gau Ghat. Aarti is performed on these three daily between 6 pm and 7 pm.
Apart from Brahma Temple and Ghats, you can also visit these places - Gayatri Temple, Savitri Temple, Rangji Temple, Varaha Temple, Agastamuni and Vishwamitra Cave, Kakadeswar-Makdeshwar Mahadev, Kapaleshwar Mahadev, Atmateshwar Mahadev, Budha Pushkar, Ajaypal Ji, Pachkund.

Brahma Temple of Pushkar
EXPLORE INDIA Series - 1
She is considered the deity for all branches of knowledge, the 36 Raginis and 6 Ragas of music, ideas such as Memory and Victory, yogas, religious acts, speech, language, and the various units of measurement and time.
She is the blood-wife of Lord Brahma. In the modern Hindu trinity, he is the creator god. It is said, in order to bring forth life on earth, Brahma created a female from his thigh. In this manner, she could be compared to the Biblical Eve.
The personal life of Saraswathi could be compared to the Biblical Queen Vashti, wife of the Persian (Zoroastrian) Emperor Ahasuerus. One interesting things about Indian mythology is the projection of gods with all human weakness. These stories may not be real; but these tales are woven with religious mythology to teach the human beings to avoid such mistakes that were committed by gods. The following is the story:
Once upon a time, when Brahma was searching for an ideal place to perform a yagna, a lotus fell from his hand onto a spot which came to be called Pushkar. The auspicious hour was selected. Brahma and his wife Savitri were to jointly perform the yagna. But as the time for the ceremony drew near, Savitri was still preoccupied beautifying herself for the event. An enraged Brahma, under the compulsion of performing the rites with a wife, married a local cowherd's daughter, Gayatri. Once Savitri learnt of this, she cursed Brahma that he would not be worshipped anywhere on earth except at Pushkar. She deserted him and sat on the nearby Ratnagiri hill. There, today, is a Savitri temple. From there, anyone with a good eyesight can see the crimson Brahma temple where The Creator still sits with the cowherd's daughter.
One can find several stories with different versions connected with the same personality as well. Goddesses Saraswathi, Lakshmi and Parvati is also considered an aspect of five-headed goddess Gayatri, who gave the famous “Gayatri Mantra” to the world.
There are very few temples exists dedicated to Lord Brahma. The major temples for Brahma exists in Pushkar, Rajasthan (India) and in Prambanan in Yogyakarta (Indonesia). Other are few minor temples for Lord Brhama in the following places in India: Bithoor (Uttar Pradesh); Khedbrahma (Gujarat); village Asotra near Balotra city of Barmer district (Rajasthan); Uttamar Kovil (one of the Divya Desams) near Tiruchirapalli (Thamizh Nadu); Carambolim near Valpoi (Goa), in addition to one in in Bali, Indonesia (Mother Temple of Besakih).
The temple priests, in order to have access to the offerings have lowered the status of the deity by preferring a legal suit.
In 1984, Mahant Laharpuri, a portly man in his seventies today and an undisputed guardian of the Brahma temple, filed a case in Pushkar courts against Benugopal Sharma, head priest of the Savitri temple. Laharpuri demanded the right to perform pujas at the Savitri temple for five days (The five days coincide with the Pushkar fair.) every year and more noteworthy is his other demand, to take the offerings coming his way on those days. As guardian of the Brahma temple, he said it was his right on the dwelling of the wife.
In a case that has seen innumerable adjournments, Laharpuri had consistently pleaded with the courts that due to religious reasons he cannot leave the Brahma temple and attend the hearings. Bansal used it against him saying that if he could not attend the court he cannot go up to the Savitri temple either. In 2004, the court dismissed the dispute. However, a fresh appeal has been now filed in the District and Sessions court at Ajmer.
Mean while, Bansal says, as defence counsel he had told the court that since Savitri was Brahma's deserted wife she should be given alimony instead by the Brahma temple. However, this was rejected by the court on the grounds that it cannot be done in regard to idols. Also according to Hindu law (regarding idols) deities are perpetual minors and they are under guardianship of the head priest, and therefore the question of any sort of maintenance does not arise.
According to Benugopal, now a 73-yearold man is confident that nothing much will come out of this fresh appeal. The case will not go to the High Court or the Supreme court, he says.
This video is made with the clips that I took last year during my visit to in Pushkar and I am sure this mini-video will give an idea about the temple dedicated Lord Brahma to those, who have not visited Pushkar.
