Trips to Santa Cruz, 1937 and 1938
A Mattos family trip to Santa Cruz along Highway 17 in 1937 transitions into another visit to Santa Cruz in '38. Note roadsigns for Aptos, San Jose, and Santa Cruz. In Santa Cruz, speedboats, the Giant Dipper, the pier, a stage show, and other attractions entertain the crowd on Easter, celebrated with an annual egg hunt in the sand. Take a ride on the Giant Dipper - just as thrilling as it is today! On the ride back to San Jose, the familiar turns of the highway are still there today - and not much wider - but don't you wish the traffic was always this light?

Biblically Named Cities
Did you know that 27 countries of the world have a city called St. James or Santiago—meaning St. James? Or that more than 150 American cities are named after locations or names mentioned in the Bible?
Like New Canaan, Connecticut, a location mentioned in Leviticus 18:3; or Lebanon, Illinois, from Isaiah 14:8. And one of the most popular biblically named cities, Bethlehem—named in over 10 states of the United States. Even Abilene—as in Abilene, Texas.
It’s mentioned once in the Bible in Luke 3:1 as the region ruled by the tetrarch Lysanias. Other city names also draw from the Bible, like St. Paul, Minnesota, San Jose, California, or St. Petersburg, Florida!

The San Agustin - California Shipwreck - TRAILER
San Agustin : California Shipwreck -- documentary trailer
IN THE FALL of 1595, a Spanish galleon sank off the coast of what is now Marin County, California. The ship, was the San Agustin, and it's sinking, just north of the yet to be discovered San Francisco Bay, is the oldest known shipwreck on the west coast of the United States. More than 70 men were stranded in an unfamiliar land, when the Manila Galleon went down in the bay at Punta de los Reyes.
With little more than the clothes on their back, Captain, Sebastian Rodriguez Cermeno, piloted the surviving crew more than 1500 miles back to New Spain, using a small sailing launch the galleon had carried with her for exploration ..and live to tell the tale. This is the story of their journey.
The 250-year history of the Manila Galleons and the important role they served in the expansion of world commerce is surprisingly under told. With the sinking of the San Agustin, near Point Reyes, California in 1595, a piece of that history remains right off the US west coast. The San Agustin : California Shipwreck, is the first documentary solely dedicated to telling this story.
This hour-long historical documentary is being produced, in association with the Non-Profit Marin History Museum located in San Rafael, California, by Thelen Creative. The project is targeted for Public Television broadcast and will be made available to educators, museums and historical entities; including Point Reyes National Seashore & Visitors Center, San Francisco Maritime Museum, California Historical Society, Maritime Museum of San Diego and the Marin History Museum. See RocketHub .com for more details.

Santa Cruz Portland Cement 2 Steams Into Aptos
Santa Cruz Portland Cement 2 The Chiggen charges through bushes and trees near Aptos, CA and Seacliff State Beach that are no match on July 14, 2014. This was an unplanned run down the former Southern Pacific, Union Pacific and now Santa Cruz County owned Santa Cruz Branch to MP 10 in order to load the 1909 HK Porter 0-4-0 onto a trailer. The truck driver determined the load would not clear obstructions between Felton and Watsonville.
Santa Cruz Big Trees & Pacific's former Santa Fe CF7 2600 and several cars trail the SCPC 2, along with a hirail backhoe that will assist in the loading.
This was the first time a steam locomotive had traversed these rails since the late 1950s; the first time ever for The Chiggen; the first time Big Trees SCBG 2600 traversed this segment of the line since its mid 1980s delivery in ATSF yellow bonnet colors or in service; and and the first train of any kind since December of 2012. A truly historic day on many fronts!
