A valley of Castles and a sunken forest - visiting Charyn Canyon, Kolsai lakes and Kaindy lake

Kazakhstan has a wide variety of landscapes. After seeing its vast desert and beautiful steppes in the western part, it was time for us to explore the eastern region of this country.We decided to go off on a short trip with two other couples we met at our hostel to visit Caryn canyon, the Kolsai lakes and Kaindy lake.

For millions of years wind and water sculpted Charyn's red sandstone to form the fantastical shades and shadows we can see today. If you're not easily impressed by something, come and visit this canyon and camp there for a night (or two)! The canyon is about 80km long and we visited the part called “The Valley of Castles”, named after the special shapes of the walls and peaks. The most impressive moment of our visit was when the sun started setting. We got treated to a spectacle of golden colors that gave the red walls a very special glow. And if that wasn't enough, that night, while we were camping near the canyon, we witnessed a show of shooting stars!

189. Fountain at the Park of the First President

Almaty is a city at the connection of steppes and mountains. A city where snow-capped peaks Zailisky Alatau are reflected in the fountains. The largest city fountain is in the park of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. It is an engineering fantasy composed of five round bowls of different levels.
On the south side there are six ponds with cascades of mirrored water jets. In the center of the fountain, there is an architectural group in the form of a crown, surrounded by medallions with the signs of the Zodiac. In the center of the crown, the main jet fountain has a diameter of 70 mm and reaches a height of up to 30m. Zodiac signs crown 12 geyser jets of height up to 3 meters. From the first and the second bowls, cascades of inner and outer 82 jets each flow. In a third bowl there are 12 nozzles hemispheres.
The fourth bowl has 10 nozzles called Hourglass, representing interlacing jets in the form of two cones connected by cusps. In the last 5th bowl there are 16 fountains in the form of Sloped Rings. Fontan is unique by its architectural significance, as if it unites all the fonts in one city in one - a symbol of Almaty. It becomes particularly interesting in the evening time, when the lights and music are turned on, and a fountain turns into a magical performance. One can endlessly stand overwhelmed, and enjoy what he sees, and no one wants to go away from this magnificent place.

Upper Tuyuksu is a compact area right above Almaty with altitudes of 3500-4500m. The best period for backcountry is April-May. Alpine zone with complicated lines for ascents and descents. Basic mountaineering skills and special equipment are necessary.
Mountains, silence, no people. Breathtaking views. Each line is unforgettable. One of the best places to challenge yourself and your equipment. A place where you want to return again and again!

We drove from Almaty to Taraz in May, it was our first road trip in Kazakhstan. It was quite warm, and it was absolutely beautiful. Be sure to pack all you need before you hit the road, anything from food, water, tissue, hand sanitizer etc. since it might be really hard to find them on the way. Also, beware of all the speed limit, it can change from 80 to 20 within a hundre meters, and there might be road police nearby. So be very careful! If they do catch you though, don't overpay your fine. ;)

Exploring Almaty, Kazakhstan / Going home

We've come full circle and are back in Almaty, Kazakhstan! We head to a WATER PARK and prepare ourselves for the long journey home.

This is the seventeenth and final part of a epic adventure spanning twenty vlogs, where we'll be exploring ancient buildings in Uzbekistan, navigating mountain passes in Tajikistan, riding on horseback at 3000m in Kyrgyzstan and so much more!
