Our hotel room at the Daemyung Resort in Danyang
We got a family room at the resort in Danyang on our vacation and it was awesome! It came with a separate ondal room for the kids, plus a kitchenette complete with rice cooker. We ended up staying an extra day in it because it was a perfect spot to start our daily explorations. The kids wanted to give a tour of the room.

Ondal Cave is one of wonderful caves in Danyang-gun.
- The total length is around 760m.
- With an imagination, they gave names on rocks, stalagmites, stalactites, etc. There are shapes of a dragon, an elephant, peaks, a turtle and so on.
- This cave has both of spacious areas and narrow areas.
- For a visitor's safety, a helmet is essential during the tour.
- Plenty of water flows next to visitors' trail. That differentiates this cave from others in Danyang.
Any living creature can be hardly seen in the water. Almost impossible for tourists.
- They estimate this cave has been formed since about 450 million years ago.
- The name 'Ondal' came from the general of the Kingdom of Goguryeo in 6th century. Because there's Ondal Fortress nearby built upon his order.
- This cave formerly called as Namgul(南窟) or Seongsangul(城山窟) in the history.
- Stalactites on ceiling and stalagmites on ground slowly grow and become stone pillars after a long period of time.

[TRIPofJHL] 단양 온달동굴 여행…
단양군의 흥미로운 동굴 중의 하나인 온달동굴(溫達洞窟).
- 총길이는 약 760m에 달한다.
- 관리공단에서 상상력을 발휘하여 바위, 종유석, 석순 등에 재미있는 이름을 붙였는데, 용, 코끼리, 도담삼봉, 거북이 등이 적혀있는 것을 볼 수 있다.
- 높다랗게 펼쳐진 넓은 구간도 있고 허리를 웅크려야 지나갈만큼 좁은 구간도 있어서 방문객은 안전모 착용이 필수.
- 탐방로 양옆으로 많은 양의 물이 흐르는게 단양의 다른 동굴과 구분되는 특징이다. 하지만, 관광객이 수서생물을 찾기란 거의 불가하다.
- 학자들은 이 동굴이 약 4억5천만년 전부터 형성되었을 것으로 추정하고 있다.
- '온달'이라는 명칭은 6세기 고구려의 장수 온달에서 온 것. 익히 들어온 '온달과 평강공주'의 그 온달 맞다. 근처에 온달의 지시로 축조된 온달산성이 있어서 온달동굴이라고 지어졌다. 과거 기록에서 사용된 명칭은 남굴(南窟) 또는 성산굴(城山窟)이었다고 한다.
- 천정의 종유석과 땅위의 석순은 천천히 자연적으로 자라며 오랜 세월후에 만나 석주를 이루게 된다.

The Hantangang River Geopark obtained national geopark status in 2015 for its exceptional geological value. Next year, it could also receive the UNESCO global geopark certification. Ahead of a UNESCO inspection team visiting next month to survey the park, visitor numbers are growing sharply. We take you to Hantangang River for the details.

The Hantangang River originates in North Korea and passes through Cheorwon in Gangwondo Province and reaches all the way to Pocheon and Yeoncheon in Gyeonggido Province. The river boasts a scenic vista with stunning column-like rock formations found along its ravines. Its designation as a national geopark in 2015 served to boost visitor numbers.
[Soundbite] KIM DAE-WOO(YEONCHEON-GUN COUNTY OFFICIAL) : The flow of new lava creates twists and turns, creating not vertical but various shapes of column-like cliffs.
Interest has further heightened in recent days as UNESCO inspectors will visit the river park next month to decide on granting global geopark status.
[Soundbite] GO GYEONG-JA(VISITOR) : It's so wonderfully beautiful. This scenery should be shown to everyone.
Local residents are also lending support to win the UNESCO recognition come April next year. Locals have even set up a travel agency to attract more visitors to the area.
[Soundbite] OK YEONG-HEE(TRAVEL AGENCY HEAD) : With hopes for people to visit and enjoy the scenic landscape, we offer tours connected to rural experience programs.
Publicity efforts such as holding art exhibitions of local artists have also helped to draw in visitors. So far this year, 300-thousand have visited the Hantangang River Geopark. Interest among travelers continues to rise as more ecological features are created in the park, including riverside hiking trails.

Friendship across 3,700 Kilometers
Gray-haired Thai woman Supaporn Sriruangsakun, who is in her 60s, and her Korean friend Ryu Ji-eun, who is in her 30s, both like cycling. Few people would imagine that these two women are friends. They met when Ji-eun was traveling in Thailand on her bike. The place where she stayed was Supaporn′s home. Supaporn provides lodging to tourists free of charge. The two remained friends even after Ji-eun returned to Korea despite the 3,700 km distance between the two countries. In the summer of 2014 the two friends reunite in Korea. Ji-eun invites Supaporn to stay at her place so that they can travel together.
Ji-eun takes Supaporn to Chungcheongbuk-do Province, the only inland province in Korea. Ji-eun chose Danyang in Chungcheongbuk-do because it is home to a large filming set for Korean period dramas, and Supaporn is a huge fan of Korean dramas. Danyang is also home to eight scenic sights. Ji-eun also takes Supaporn to Jecheon, the cradle of traditional Korean medicine, to help her get rid of her health problems. As Supaporn says, traveling is ideal when young and old people travel together. The friendship of these two women transcends national borders and generations, growing stronger every time they travel together.

흰머리 희끗한 60대 수파폰(Supaporn SRIRUANGSAKUN) 씨와 미소가 예쁜 30대 지은(RYU Ji-eun) 씨가 나란히 자전거를 타고 달린다. 잘 어울리지 않아 보이는 이 둘의 만남도 자전거 여행에서 시작됐다. 지은 씨가 한국에서 가져간 자전거로 보름간 태국 여행을 하던 중 자전거 여행자들에게 무료로 잠자리를 제공하고 있던 수파폰 씨 집에서 머물게 된 것이다. 지은 씨가 한국으로 돌아온 후에도 두 사람의 인연은 3,700KM의 거리를 두고 계속 이어졌다. 이번 여름, 두 사람은 한국에서 다시 만나게 됐다. 지은 씨가 수파폰 씨에게 자신의 집에서 잠자리를 제공하고, 함께 여행을 떠나기로 한 것이다.
지은 씨가 수파폰 씨를 위해 준비한 여행은 우리나라에서 유일하게 내륙에 위치한 충청북도. 한국 드라마 마니아인 수파폰 씨가 드라마 촬영지를 꼭 방문해 보고 싶어 했기 때문이다. 한국 드라마 촬영지로도 유명한 충청북도 단양은 아름다운 8군데의 경치를 관광 코스로 만들어 놨을 만큼 출중한 자연 경관을 자랑한다. 그리고 수파폰 씨의 건강을 위해 한방 치유의 고장인 제천 여행도 준비했다. 여행은 늙은이와 젊은이가 함께할 때 가장 이상적이라는 수파폰 씨. 세대와 나라를 초월한 두 사람의 우정은 3,700KM의 거리를 건너 또 하나의 새로운 여행을 시작하게 했다.

If you are to see only one temple in Korea, make it this one! Guinsa Temple is the headquarters of Cheontae order of Korean Buddhism. This temple is massive and can accommodate 10,000 people at one time. There are over 23 different buildings and structures to see and explore here. The temple is in the middle of a valley and you have to walk up hill quite a bit to see it all. Make sure you bring water and rest as you need too. At each step of the way you are will see impressive views and amazing colors.

From Dong Seoul Bus Terminal, take an intercity bus to Guinsa Temple. Bus Schedule: 06:59-18:00, 1 hour intervals
By Train:
Danyang is on the eastern Jungang line from Seoul's Cheongnyangni station through Wonju to Andong. There are mugunghwa services every hour or two (2h05, ₩10,000), and two saemaeul expresses daily (2h00, ₩14,000). The train station is 3km outside Danyang, but you can take a bus from the stop just outside the station (₩1000) or a taxi (around ₩5000).

The Sudeoksa Temple, which has played an important role in the history of Korea’s Buddhism, is located in the Deoksungsan Mountains. The main building of the Sudeoksa Temple, the Daeunjeon, has been preserved in its original condition. This was first constructed in 1308 and has been designated a national treasure. Between 1528 and 1803 it was repaired four times, but fortunately kept its original beauty. As well as the Deungjeon, the Sudeoksa Temple houses many cultural treasures, such as the Sudeoksa 3-story stone pagoda.

While Yi found success at sea, the Korean land army suffered terrible losses. Yi Il, the man who once accused Yi of negligence, lost one battle after another, until finally the regular forces were annhilated at Chungju. The Joseon court that ruled to Korea fled to Pyongyang, on the verge of being pushed out of their own country. But that same day, Admiral Yi tore through a Japanese fleet at Okpo. He moved on to Sacheon, where he baited the Japanese commander into a trap and debuted his turtle ship. The unstoppable turtle ship carried the day, so he used this tactic again and again he destroyed a Japanese fleet while suffering no losses of his own. Finally, Hideyoshi ordered his naval commanders to take Jeolla, Yi's headquarters. Sadly for him, his general Wakisaka Yasaharu grew too eager and engaged Yi without backup at Gyeonnaeryang Strait, only to find himself lured into an even more sophisticated version of Yi's bait-and-retreat strategy: a Crane's Wing of ships that collapsed on the overextended target from all sides. In one of the largest naval battles in history, Yi scored a decisive win and again didn't lose a single ship. He headed to Angolpo to attack Hideyoshi's two remaining generals and seal his victory, but they refused to be baited. He had to settle for a long range exchange of cannon fire, which worked at the cost of many injuries to his own men. In the end, he destroyed all but a few Japanese ships, and those he only spared to give the Japanese some means to escape and stop raiding in Korea. But he had accomplished his goal: Hideyoshi ordered a halt to all naval operations except guarding Busan, and without this control of the sea, Japan could not re-supply their troops nor hope to resume the assault that would have finally pushed Korea's leaders out of Korea.
