Living with the Berber women of Morocco
An incredible experience hiking and living with the nomadic Berber women in the Atlas mountains of Morocco.
Sadly many of the women and young girls that we met were illiterate and drop out of primary school early as schools are hard to get to and teach in Arabic not their indigenous Berber language. With the men leaving for up to 11 months of the year to earn money, the women are left to take care of the home, family and livestock - an incredibly physically demanding task leaving me in no doubt that the Berber women are the strongest women I have met in my life. Thank you to Hafida Hdoubane Morocco’s first ever female guide for showing us this beautiful side of the world.

The Leather Tanneries of Fez, Morocco
In Fez, leather-making is done in pits that date back to the 11th century. There are three tanneries in Fez, this being the largest. Customers are given a sprig of mint to hold under their noses, in a vain attempt to mask the stench from the pits, where limestone, alum, and pigeon droppings full of ammonia are used in the process. After a brief orientation at the terraces overlooking the pits, customers are taken to the showroom, where the real show begins - negotiating for leather jackets, purses, slippers, ottomans, belts and more. Entry from: Fes, Morocco
Entry Title: Fez Morocco
Entry:
Fez is one of the most exotic locations on earth. It is all third world now, but 1150 years ago, it established the University of Al-Karaouine (859), considered to be the oldest extant university in the world, educated Pope Sylvester II in the 11th century, who introduced Arabic numerals into Europe. 300 years after that, it was the largest city on the planet at around 250,000 people compared to Henry II's London at 30,000. Fez was the cultural, educational, military, scientific, and political center of the Mediterranean, perfecting the astrolabe when the rest of Europe was trying to remember how to carve marble. Italy had just started the Tower of Pisa, France was starting Notre Dame.
The tantalizing part is that Fez enjoyed international significance before there were nations, but now it hardly seems to care. They trouble more about a donkey cart than the carbon balance, will ignore their only industry, tourism, in favor of a card game. Yet the relevance of the place is unmistakable. Defensive walls as imposing as Rome, meaningful architecture, massive Civil works, tranquil beauty and stunning craftsmanship sustained over a period of 1200 years.
Fez was founded in the eighth century, or so. The date is intentionally vague since there is some competition for the title of Morocco's oldest city, but it's all semantics anyway since Tangier and Rabat have been civilized for more than 3500 years.
When Islam came to Morocco in the 8th century, Fez became a center for its study and culture, and the political center of Northwest Africa. It was a dynamic city of Muslims, Jews and Christians unequaled for its diversity and influence.
As the 12th century turned, Mahommed ibn Tumart, the son of a lamplighter in a mosque, small, ugly, and misshapen, but pious came out of the Atlas mountains to form the ALMOHAD Dynasty which eventually conquered all northern Africa as far East as Egypt and as far North as Moslem Spain. Fez was the center of the Almohad kingdom, though the capital was officially moved to Seville for a few years until the Christians got tired of being ruled by the moors.
During the height of the Almohad dynasty, Fes was described as having seven hundred and eighty five mosques and retreats (Rome today has a population 10 times that of 12th century Fez, and is regarded as abundant in churches with a total of about 300). There were also 240 places of convenience and purification, 80 public fountains, 93 public baths, 472 mills, 89036 dwelling houses, 19041 warehouses, 467 foundouks (merchant hotels), 9082 shops, 3064 workshops, 117 public houses; 86 tanneries; 116 dye works; 12 copper smiths; 136 bread ovens; 1170 other ovens, and 400 paper making shops. Number of breweries: 0.
Fez hosted Morocco's finest for the next 900 years, participating in regional education, politics and commerce. Like many Moroccan cities, its wealthy class built courtyard houses affording an outdoor place for the women to hang out, run the household, raise the kids, and remain invisible to the public. The style, called Riad, was also adopted for public buildings like the Koran School Medarsa Bouanania one of several in Fez from the 14th century. The really great thing about these Riads is that they lend themselves to conversions as small hotels, 6-12 rooms typically. They let you in on a thousand years of Moroccan intrigue, eating dates and contemplating beauty just like the great Merinide Sultan Abu Inan, waiting for the descendants of the prophet Mohammed to sweep through town and grab power.
And, about the hat ...
The fez (Greek: φέσι fesi, Turkish: fes, plural fezzes or fezes - I'll have 2 fezzes, please), or Tarboosh (Egyptian Arabic: طربوش), red felt hat in the shape of a truncated cone, or in the shape of a short cilinder made of kilim fabric. With tassles.

The Ancient Roman City of Volubilis in Morocco
Volubilis is an ancient Roman colonial city in Morocco, situated at an altitude of 1300 feet (400 meters), between Fes and Rabat, not far from the city of Meknes (about 18 miles, or 29 km). It was developed from the 3rd Century BC onwards as a Phoenician, and later Carthaginian, settlement, built in a fertile agricultural area. It is one of the most important Roman sites in north Africa. The excavations revealed glorious temples and a basilica, gates, aqueduct, baths, various tools and superb mosaic floors.
The Arch of Caracalla, was erected in AD 217 by the city’s Governor Marcus Aurelius Sebastenus, in honor of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Caracalla and his mother, Julia Domna.
The city of Volubilis was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
BACKPACKER - ENG - From Fes El-Balì to Chefchaouen (Morocco)
BACKPACKER - English Version - From Fes El-Balì to Chefchaouen (Morocco) - NoPainNoGlory.TK by BackpackerR
Fes or Fez, the holy city of Morocco, 980 feet above sea level, the bottom of a fertile valley. It is the provincial capital. The old town, its buildings, its markets and its mosques, one of the most attractive of the whole Islamic world.
For the population of Morocco is the third largest city and the oldest imperial city and this is the prevalence of secular prestige and importance of its ancient university on culture and art of the Muslim North Africa.
You will find it written by all parties, and I do not deny it, enter the medina of Fes el Bali, seems really to make a trip to the Middle Ages.
Colors, sounds and smells, dominate the senses, the first time will be stunned, is a fascinating experience!
The medina is UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Morocco food is spectacular! The spices are unique!
Costs 5 Dirhams, you can enjoy the snails, a gastronomic delight! The stand is located on the street, and between Talaa Seghira Derb el-Horr.
Try some of the myriad of street stalls, delicious sandwiches with meat cooked, the flavor of a thousand spices, joy and passion in the process! All this costs between 10 and 20 dirhams, 1 - 2 euro to be paid for a single meal.
I recommend a meal in a restaurant elite, which can cost 70-100 dirhams.
La Kasbah!
At the entrance of the Medina, at Bab Bou Jeloud, this restaurant gives you the opportunity to dine on a terrace where you can admire the medina. The menu, tagine, cous cous and grilled meat to satisfy your palate!
The only means of transport in the heart of the medina are donkeys, they feel constantly scream Ballaké which in Arabic means caution.
As you will notice that the gas arrives in the medina with the ass!
Arrived in Chefchaouen in the late afternoon, I went in the main square of the medina, Plaza Uta el-Hammam,
in a cafe where I enjoyed a mint tea, watching what was happening around me.
In this square you can admire the Grand Mosque and the walls of the Kasbah, a central fountain, very characteristic.
The medina is characterized by narrow streets, colored with white walls and blue doors, the white reflects the sun, and heat, blue for mosquitoes,
has kindly described as a local resident.
Different the medina of Fez, this is smaller and it is hard to lose orientation.
The medina of Chefchaouen was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
One of the must-see attractions are the waterfalls of Chefchaouen in Ras-El-Maa, crossed the bridge you can admire the ruins of a mosque, now abandoned for a century.
For the more ambitious I highly recommend an excursion to the Jebel, for 4 - 5 hours, part near the Camping Azilane, following the road to Ain Tissimlane.
The trail is marked by a yellow stripe and white marked on the rocks.
I went for an hour, then for lack of time and forced back, I had to give up, so it's a company that will be taken!
If you want more information on excursions to be made in Chefchaouen area, contact the tourist office
which also makes use of a good expert guide for a half-day tour will cost 120 dirham.
To sleep advice Mouritania Hotel, a magnificent structure with a tiled courtyard, a bed is available at 5 euro per night, also has an excellent internet point.
Do not miss the cafe in Chefchaouen and Bab-Ansar Cafe, near the Falls of Ras-al-Maa, Aziz and Patisserie, a bakery for delicious breakfasts.
From what I have seen Chefchaouen is a city to relax and go hiking.
If you want to use a bath, you should go to the center form alive, in the Atlas Riad Chefchaouen, the hotel that stands at the top of Chefchaouen, treatments from 50 to 400 dirhams.
Do not miss the steam room, Barakat Douches, 8 Dirham, times, for men has opened in the morning, for women, in the afternoon.
To take the bus to Fes, I decided to walk the 6 miles separating from Dardari Chefchaouen, in the street I had the opportunity to see children returned from school that is offered as information guides, taxi riders, loggers, makers bricks, and so on and so forth!
The view is breathtaking, the food flavor is strident, the people are fantastic, life full of rhythm and joy ....
Morocco fantastic! See you soon!
