Walking around the town of Alhama de Murcia Spain #the3amigos #expatinmazarron
Alhama de Murcia Spain.
Alhama is located in the Guadalentín Valley, sheltered by the Spuras of Espuña and La Muela. Defensive towers, castles, remains of walls, Renaissance mansions and noble houses reflect the long history of this valley. City that Arabs and Romans associated with the hot springs that flowed from the mountains, this characteristic is what will give name to the population, since Alhama means thermal bath. Witness to it are the ruins of the Roman baths, nowadays converted into an archeological museum. Its construction dates back to the 1st century, although they were later used in the Islamic era. On the rocky cliff that dominates the city are the remains of the Arab castle built in the s. Xll and whose feet have settled the population. Taken from the Alhama de Murcia Tourist Information website.

Places to see in ( Murcia - Spain ) Cartagena
Cartagena is a port city and naval base in the Murcia region of southeast Spain. Founded by the Carthaginians around 220 B.C., the city boomed during the Roman period. Among its many Roman ruins are a 1st-century B.C. theater and Casa de la Fortuna, a villa with murals and mosaics. The Muralla Púnica (Punic Wall) interpretation center houses the remains of a 3rd-century B.C. defensive wall.
The port of Cartagena, in the Mediterranean's Costa Cálida, has been prized since Carthaginian times. Thanks to its strategic position on the Murcia coast, it has been inhabited by several cultures which have left their mark on its artistic heritage. A tour of the place and its museums will draw us into the history of a city closely tied to the sea.
This maritime enclave was already known to the Carthaginians and Romans, and its name today comes from the Latin, Cartago Nova. Cartagena was under Arab domination until Ferdinand III 'the Saint' reconquered it and incorporated it into the kingdom of Castile. Its port played a key role in the War of Succession and the Peninsular War.
The rich Carthaginian heritage spreads to the shores of its marina. The Muralla del Mar ('Sea Wall'), built by Charles III (18th century), delimits the old quarter. Overlooking the Mediterranean there is an element which is clearly connected with the sea: the prototype of the submarine by the inventor from Cartagena, Isaac Peral. In addition, the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology ARQUA (at Paseo Alfonso XII, 22) houses the National Centre for Underwater Archaeological Research. The findings on display reveal aspects of naval construction, trade and navigation since ancient times.
The entrance to the city centre is dominated by the Town Hall, a gem of modernist architecture dating from the early 20th century. The Old Cathedral is located on the Camino del Parque Torres (behind the Muralla del Mar wall). This is the oldest place of worship in CartagenaCartagena (13th century), and stands on the remains of a Roman theatre discovered in 1987. This construction dates from the first century A.D., and together with the theatre in Mérida, is one of the most important in Spain. The items found on this site can be seen in the Museum of the Roman Theatre.
Other examples of Roman splendour to be seen in the city are the archaeological site of El Molinete, the Morería Baja colonnade and the Byzantine Wall, which –despite its name– is also Roman. Particularly worth mentioning are the Augusteum and the Decumanus. The first contains the remains of the old forum, whose importance as a public building can be seen from the luxurious marble floors on display at the site. The second can be visited on the site adjoining the Roman Forum quarter, a key centre for visitors to the city, containing the different rooms in the city's Roman baths. The Casa Fortuna, built in the first century B.C. and belonging to a wealthy family, shows what daily life was like at the time of the Roman Empire.
The Torres park is the site of the Concepción castle. Standing atop a hill, it served as a fortress to Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths, Arabs and Castilians, and now houses the History and Mediaeval Cartagena Visitor Centre. Indeed the city has always had numerous defensive military buildings. A good example is the Navidad Fortress, built in the mid-19th century and today the Visitor Centre for the Defensive Architecture of Cartagena and the Mediterranean. Also worth visiting is the Refuge – Civil War museum, a series of galleries which were used as protection from aerial attack throughout the conflict.

Places to see in ( Murcia - Spain ) Cieza
Cieza is a town and municipality in Spain, in the autonomous community of Murcia. It is the capital of the Vega Alta comarca, an old form of provincial subdivision). Its current population is around 40,000. The Segura River passes by the town.
Its economy is based on agriculture, mainly in the cultivation of peaches and olives, but industry is also important, since 4,000 people work in that sector. The public sector, transports and tourism are also very important in the local economy.
Populated since the Paleolithic Age, the area of Cieza is home to archaeological excavations in Almadenes, La Serreta, and Barranco de los Grajos. There are also Iberian remains (found at Bolvax), as well as Roman, Visigothic, and Arabic deposits. The Arabs, who inhabited the area from the eleventh to thirteenth centuries, and who knew the area as Medina Siyâsa, left behind a mountain fortress. At the dig site of Medina Siyâsa, many decorative architectural elements have been found, such as engraved arches and porticos, and polychromed ceramics, glass, metals, etc. All these discoveries are kept in the museum of Siyâsa. The Ermita (hermitage) de la Virgen del Buen Suceso is located in the area known as Collado de la Atalaya. The Plaza de España is located in the heart of the city. The modern market was built in 1929 by Julio Carrilero.
El Paseo (The Walkway) contains pictorial work in glazed tile by José Lucas, who dedicated the different tiles to several men of letters. The main church is the eighteenth-century Basílica de la Asunción. Inside, there are sculptures and retablos by Rafael Ximeno y Planes, Ignacio Pinazo Martínez, José González Moreno, Francisco Romero Zafra, etc.
The Iglesia de San Joaquín, dating from the seventeenth century, used to be a Franciscan monastery in the past. The church-monastery of the Order of Poor Ladies (Clarisas), from the eighteenth century is also an important monument. Other important sites include the main market, which was built in 1929, and El Muro (The Wall), built in the nineteenth century in the place where the medieval wall was located.

Places to see in ( Murcia - Spain ) Aguilas
Águilas is a municipality and seaport of southeastern Spain, in the province of Murcia. It is situated at the southern end of Murcia's Mediterranean coastline, otherwise known as the Costa Cálida, near the border with the Province of Almería.
The municipality has an area of approximately 253.7 km², with some 28 km of coastline. It is 105 km from the provincial capital, Murcia. Águilas is built on the landward side of a small peninsula, between two bays—the Puerto Poniente, a good harbour, on the south-west, and the Puerto Levante, which is somewhat dangerous to shipping in rough weather, on the north-east.
Three kilometres northeast of Aguilas is la Isla del Fraile (Monk Island), so named thanks to the similarity of the island's silhouette to a monk's hood. The island has a small rocky beach and a very steep geography. The top of the island gives way to a sudden drop down to the sea on the island's back side. The island was inhabited by the Romans, who used it to export fish byproducts to Rome in amphorae. The remains of a Roman wall are still visible, as are a couple of structures of the early 20th century built by an eccentric British lord who lived on the island and used it for contraband purposes.
Adjacent to the island, on the mainland, is la Playa Amarilla, which is the coastal delineation of La Isla del Fraile residential development. This property was initially developed by Dr. Antonio Sáez Jimenez with basic infrastructure, including the road as well as the planting of hundreds of trees, and was known as Playa Niagara through the 1970s and 1980s. In the 1970s, graves from the Roman era were discovered on the property's coast, facing the island.
Known in Roman times as Aquilae and later Aquila, Águilas belonged to the community of Bastetania and the province of Tarraconense. Various civilisations settled in Águilas, including the Alans, the Suebi and the Visigoths. It formed part of Spanish Carthage until the Arab invasion of the Iberian Peninsula.

Muralla Árabe
The Arab Wall of Murcia is the old defensive structure of the city, built during the reign of the Taifa monarch Ibn Mardanis in the 12th century. The wall remained in use until 1488. Subsequently, the walls were used in new buildings built on top. The doors that gave access to the old medina which were the last structures of the wall to disappear were also reformed in the second half of the 9th century.
The first wall that defended the city was built in the 9th century. The wall had more than 90 towers.
Places to see in ( Murcia - Spain ) Real Casino de Murcia
Places to see in ( Murcia - Spain ) Real Casino de Murcia
The Real Casino de Murcia , commonly known as Casino de Murcia , is one of the most emblematic buildings of the city of the same name, capital of the Region of Murcia ( Spain ). It is located in the center of it, in Trapería street , not far from the cathedral . The building, whose construction began in 1847 is a mixture of different artistic currents that coexisted in the second half of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century in Spain and was declared a national historical-artistic monumentin 1983, so it is now considered to be of cultural interest , with the category of ' monument '.
The building is the seat of the institution of the same name, which functions as a private club. Open to sightseeing and other events, it is the most visited civil building in the Region of Murcia 2 and, with only organized groups, are visited annually by an average of 150 000 people, of which 25 000 are foreign.
After a period of increasing deterioration caused by the crisis of the institution, the building has been deeply restored between the years 2006 and 2009. On the occasion of the completion of restoration works, King Juan Carlos I of Spain awarded the Casino de Murcia the title of Real .
The façade of Trapería Street, early 20th century, is eclectic with modernist and historicist influences designed by Pedro Cerdán . On both sides of the main door are two glass halls, popularly known for their appearance as peceras , whose exquisite decoration by Manuel Castaños was reused in the Palace of Parque Florido, now home to the Lázaro Galdiano Museum in Madrid.
The entrance door and a small Neo-Baroque lobby are accessed through the Arab Patio, whose spectacular Neo- Roman style decoration , by Manuel Castaños , required more than 20 000 sheets of gold leaf . The starry vault that covers the patio is the highest part of the building. An inscription in Arabic that reads Nothing greater than Allah is repeated all along the perimeter.
Another dependence that can be visited is the library , built in 1913 , with its upper gallery of carved wood, supported by cast iron corbels representing flamingos, and thousands of volumes in antique bindings. The ladies' dressing table is decorated with feminine allegories of the goddess Selene painted on the ceiling, while the tea room has a spectacular plaster ceiling, fully recovered after its collapse in the late 1970s .
The courtyard named Pompeian is neoclassical style and has in the center a Venus , work of Jose Planes , on a pedestal with episodes of the life of Zeus . The most notable dependence of the building is the ballroom, a large neo-baroque double height space dating from 1875 . The ceilings are decorated with allegories of poetry, painting, music and architecture, as well as portraits of illustrious Murcians such as José Moñino, Count of Floridablanca , sculptor Francisco Salzillo , painter Nicolás de Villacis and actor Julián Romea . On the walls we find stuccoes with allegories of the dance. The floor is parquet inlaid five chandeliers of Baccarat crystal give light to the room with more than seven hundred bulbs.

Real Casino and Veronicas Market in Murcia - Spain 4K Travel Channel
It is our first visit to Murcia. After the Festival Entierro de la Sardina, we extend our stay some days to visit more highlights in Murcia and the surrounding area. We start the day in our hotel Catalonia Conde De Floridablanca with our usual extensive breakfast. Afterward, we exchange our data with the friendly staff. They are always very polite, helpful and spread a good mood.
First, we visit the Real Casino Murcia, one of the most remarkable buildings in the city. It is also the most frequented civilian building, with 150,000 visitors per year.
The building, founded by the Sociedad del Casino, an association of the bourgeoisie, functioned as a meeting place.
Different art movements meet each other here, which parallel existed in Spain at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century.
After the renovation between 2006 and 2009, King Juan Carlos I awarded the building the titles Real.
The glazed restaurants to the right and left of the entrance door in Calle Traperia are popularly known as the Aquarium.
Behind it follows the Arabic inner courtyard, which, from an architectural point of view, strongly reminds of the Alhambra in Granada.
From the following Galeria Central, which runs from east to west, passages branch off into differently designed rooms.
First, we go to the library, which stands out for its wooden galleries, then to the Congresillo with its paintings, a meeting place for important personalities. The ballroom with its gilded decorations and ceiling paintings follows.
Then come various smaller rooms and halls, such as the Pompeian courtyard with its sculptures and the billiard room and the armory.
Finally, we visit the Tocador, a hall of mirrors with gold-painted decorations that served as a dressing and make-up room for the ladies.
The Real Casino shows some important paintings of contemporary artists such as Germán Hernández Amores, Pedro Sánchez Picazo, Juan Antonio Gil Montejano, and Obdulio Miralles.

Jahrhunderts in Spanien parallel existierten.

Places to see in ( Medina Sidonia - Spain )
Medina-Sidonia is a city and municipality in the province of Cádiz in the autonomous community of Andalusia, southern Spain. Medina Sidonia is considered by some to be the oldest city in Europe, used as a military defense location due to its elevated location. Locals are known as Asidonenses. The city's name comes from Medina (Arabic for city) and Sidonia (of Sidon), meaning City of Sidon.
Medina-Sidonia was one of Spain's most important ducal seats in the 15th century; producing an admiral, Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, 7th Duke of Medina Sidonia, who led the Spanish Armada against England in 1588. The title of Duque de Medina Sidonia was bestowed upon the family of Guzmán El Bueno for his valiant role in taking the town. The line continues and was led until March 2008 by the controversial socialist, Luisa Isabel Álvarez de Toledo, 21st Duchess of Medina Sidonia (born 1936).
This city of Medina Sidonia was most likely ancient Asido, an Iberian settlement which may have been founded by the Phoenicians, hence the later name Sidonia reflecting its foundation by Sidon. Its earliest phase is known through its coinage and its 2nd and 1st centuries BC issues bear the Latin inscription Asido but also Punic inscriptions such as 'sdn or b'b'l, with Herakles and Dolphins being notable obverse and reverse designs. The Barrington Atlas of the ancient world equates this site with modern Medina Sidonia-lying within the ancient Roman province of Turdetania some 30 km (19 mi) inland from the Southern Spanish coast, this site lay upon a hill c 35 km (22 mi) to the east of Gades (modern Cadiz), and 15 km (9 mi) to the west of the Besilus river. By the 3rd century BC the Romans had gained control over much of southern Spain and once coming under Roman hegemony this site was later referred to as Asido Caesarina. In 712 the town was conquered by the Muslim commander Musa ibn Nusair, and became the capital of the cora (province) of Sidonia in the emirate of Spain. It returned in Christian hands with Alfonso X of Castile, in 1264, becoming a stronghold along the frontier with the last Muslim country in the Iberian peninsula, the Kingdom of Granada. It was also the seat of several military orders. In 1440 it became part of the lordship of the Dukes of Medina-Sidonia.
The town of Medina Sidonia is characterized by medieval walls and tidy narrow cobbled streets flanked by rows of reja-fronted houses. Sights include:
The Castle (13th-15th centuries)
Roman archaeological complex (1st century AD)
Town Hall (16th century)
La Alameda (16th century)

Church of Saint Mary the Crowned (Spanish: Iglesia de Santa María la Coronada)

Places to see in ( Andalusia - Spain ) Baeza Old Town
Baeza formerly also written as Baéza, is an Andalusian town in the province of Jaén in southern Spain. It lies perched on a cliff in the Loma de Úbeda, the range separating the Guadalquivir River to its south from the Guadalimar to its north. It is now principally famed for having some of the best-preserved examples of Italian Renaissance architecture in Spain. Along with Úbeda, it was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 2003. The former Visigothic bishopric of Baeza remains a Latin Catholic titular see.
The former Baeza Cathedral is built over a former mosque. It was first used in Christian service in the 12th century during Castile's first period of rule. It was then used as a mosque before its reconquest in the 13th century. The most ancient parts are the cubic base of the bell tower and three (presently hidden) Islamic arches. Most of the present Renaissance-influenced Gothic structure—including the nave with two aisles, pilasters, and crossed vaults—dates to around 1529. The tower was redone in 1549 and the Chapel of St Michael was added in 1560. Construction was completed under Andrés de Vandelvira.
Town Hall (Ayuntamiento), a Plateresque building originally built as a combined courthouse and prison, leading to two separate main entrances. Baeza University, established in 1533. Santa Cruz Church, a Romanesque church with a two-aisle nave and semicircular apse. A side wall incorporates a Visigothic arch. St Paul's Church, a Gothic church with a Renaissance portal with a two-aisle nave and Gothic chapels. Includes the tomb of Pablo de Olavide.
Baeza is 327 km (203 mi) south of Madrid by highway. The Linares–Baeza RENFE railway station is 15 km (9 mi) away to the southwest; it lies on the Linares-Almeria line. There are bus connections to Granada, Málaga, and Madrid. Granada (132 km or 82 mi) and Málaga (241 km or 150 mi) are the nearest international airports.
