Coasting through Kenya, Watamu & Gede
Located north of Mombassa on the Indian ocean, Watamu is pleasant town to spend few days and has some nearby interests. A 20 minute ride inland from Watamu is the small village of Gede, which used to be one of the largest and most important of the Swahili city states along the coast. Right next to the Gede ruins is Kipepeo Butterfly farm. Here conservation and the local economy have a symbiotic relationship. The farmers in the area are paid to collect pupae from the local Arabuko sokoke Forest. The butterflies are hatched in the farm and then sold to foreign collectors and museums. The money goes back into conservation and keeps the local people employed without having to cut the forest reserve, which contain high concentration of rare species of birds and butterflies.

Kenya - Ruins of Gedi
Today the ruins of Gedi have the special atmosphere of crumbled medieval stone, one story buildings in a mystical, foggy forest. Gedi was an important medieval Swahili-Arab trade center that was occupied from the 11th until the 17th century. Standing buildings include mosques, houses and a palace. It has been one of the most thoroughly investigated Swahili-Arab sites. It is located in eastern Kenya near the Indian Ocean in the Kilifi District and within the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest.

Butterfly farming helping conserve Arabuko Sokoke forest
An innovative community-based conservation project started more than 20 years ago near the Kenyan Coast seems to be paying off.
The Arabuko Sokoke forest has been under threat from illegal logging. But the Kipepeo butterfly farming project is helping the community conserve the forest and earn money at the same time.

Watamu: Arabuko Sokoke Forest

Arabuko-Sokoke Forest drive
MagicalKenya - Arabuko Sokoke
Arabuko Sokoke is a costal forest to the North of Mombasa. This fascinating forest wilderness is nestled beside the beaches of Watamu. The forest is a world apart from the beaches and reefs with an untold wealth of natural beauty. The air is filled with butterflies and birds, the trees alive with monkeys and the forest floor home to many smaller mammals.
The forest stretches to the headwaters of the mighty Sabaki River, and occasionally herds of elephant pass through the forest en route to the river. The 13th century Swahili town of Gedi thrived here for hundreds of years, hidden away from Portuguese invaders and the influence of the outside world. The town was eventually deserted, and today the ruins of Gedi, lying among the trees and twisting vines of the forest are a haunting reminder of the past.

Butterfly farming has significantly improved livelihoods of Gede residents on the coast of Kenya and encouraged conservation of the Arabuko Sokoke forest.
